Upgradable Space: Reborn to Survive the Apocalypse

Chapter 611 Power Out

The answer from the prison made them think hard. No matter how they do the math, Shane could not have come here from the far northwest in such a short time. Before this, they had only thrown him out of Hornvale, and he couldn't even find his way back. He had somehow found Caroline's group with perfect accuracy. When the word "gift" came up, Caroline suddenly thought of her cyan energy. Before, she had searched for a long time and never met a single cyan-energy mutated creature. But in the past few days, they had run into several—one after another. First, there was one at the entrance of the mobile base. It got swallowed by the wall, and she never got it. That wall later gained its own upgrade path and was taken into storage space to be reforged. Later, the army got a cyan panda. Caroline didn't want to kill the panda and was still hesitating when Kay suddenly brought back the corpse of a cyan cockroach. People said things happen once, maybe twice, but never three times. When something keeps repeating, it means trouble. After ten years in the apocalypse—both in her past life and this one—Caroline no longer believed in luck. And there was Shane. When he left, his eyes were normal. When he came back, they were two different colors. He had no cyan ability in his body, yet his eyes clearly showed cyan ability. When Nelson repeated what the other side had said, he treated it like a simple statement. He didn't know about cyan ability, so he was completely confused. But Caroline linked the word "gift" with cyan ability in her mind. It felt like a conspiracy. And now, this sandstorm... Caroline walked to a window and looked outside. It was pitch black. The wind howled so loudly that even the thick walls couldn't block the sound. "That person knew this sandstorm was coming," Caroline said slowly, thinking about the words spoken through Shane. "This person might even be controlling it." "Caroline, I don't think it's might," Nelson said slowly. "I think that's exactly what's happening." Caroline didn't reply. She was putting all the pieces together in her head. It felt like she was just about to touch the truth. As they talked, the temperature kept rising. In a short time, it climbed close to 104°F. They weren't even moving, but sweat kept pouring down their bodies. After finishing the discussion, Caroline took out two large chunks of ice and handed them to Nelson to carry back to his room. She planned to look for Kay. It had been a long time since she last saw her. Caroline wanted to know if Kay had sorted out her family issue. But the moment the ice blocks touched Nelson's hands, someone rushed out from the side and snatched one away. Nelson frowned. Caroline's gaze turned sharp. It was a little girl. Her clothes were clean, and her face was cute, but her eyes were full of spoiled arrogance. The girl hugged the ice block and shouted, "Mom! It's so hot! I want this ice!" Her tone made it sound like as long as her mother said yes, the ice would belonged to her. Next to her stood a well-dressed woman. When the woman saw the girl took the ice, she didn't stop her. Instead, she smiled and said, "Alright, take it." Then the woman turned to Caroline. Her face went cold. She casually pulled out a pack of compressed biscuits from her bag and tossed it over without even looking, like she was throwing scraps to a beggar. "Here. This buys your ice." Her attitude was full of arrogance. It was clear she was used to bullying others. Caroline knew that this area was assigned by the army. It had the best living conditions in the entire base. The people living here were either powerful or had made great contributions to the base. Their families lived here too. Judging by the woman's behavior, she was probably some important person's wife. Even in the apocalypse, she couldn't change her bad habits. Caroline bent down and picked up the compressed biscuits. In the apocalypse, no matter how bad things got, you never wasted food. She blew the dust off the pack and looked at the woman. "And?" Caroline asked calmly. The woman widened her eyes, not understanding what she meant. She lifted her chin and glared. "What do you mean?" Caroline pointed at the ice block in the girl's arms and smiled slightly. "That thing," she said. "You think one pack of compressed biscuits can buy it? Do you take us for beggars?" The woman snorted. "You think I don't know. That ice came from your ability. You only used a little effort. One pack of biscuits is more than enough," she said coldly. "Don't act dumb. I know the prices in this base."
