Upgradable Space: Reborn to Survive the Apocalypse
Even so, several deep dents marked the metal shield Tyler had transformed into. One could only imagine that Tyler had already been injured. Shane stood in the middle of the corridor with his head lowered, completely motionless. He wore a prison uniform, and his entire body looked even thinner than before. His spine hunched slightly, his hair had grown long, and his cheeks were sharply sunken, making him look like a worn-down fugitive. The cupcake Caroline had just given him now lay on the ground, crushed into a pulpy mess by the recent attack. Caroline had no idea what Shane had been through during this time. Shane had been tricked into imprisonment at a special prison in western Caswana. There, he hadn't seen any cupcakes, nor had he seen Nelson. He'd been shackled with special ankle cuffs and handcuffs binding his hands and feet. He'd also been locked in a cramped, specially reinforced cell. Those people had used cheap, subpar cupcakes to deceive him while drawing his blood, cutting his hair, and extracting his epithelial tissue. All of this, he had endured. But what he couldn't endure was that those cupcakes were all the same flavor. And they weren't even made as well as Nelson's. This was the apocalypse. Food was so scarce, there were barely any dairy cows left, and even with advanced technology, it would take considerable research and development time. In such a short period, it was already impressive that ordinary researchers could produce any cupcakes at all, yet Shane had actually gotten sick of eating them. And that was after only three days. Those ankle cuffs and handcuffs might work on ordinary ability users, but they were useless on Shane. The moment Shane realized he'd been tricked, he immediately went berserk and demolished the entire prison. But he hadn't found Nelson, nor had he found cupcakes in any other flavors. So he had nearly lost his mind. He escaped from that prison and took with him the cat he'd ridden there. Just like that, one man and one cat set out on their journey again. This time, he'd learned his lesson. He brought some food and water and ran straight in one direction, no longer asking those conniving humans for help, and absolutely refusing to trust anyone. Everything would rely on instinct. Then he traveled farther and farther, slowly leaving civilization behind and venturing deep into the heart of the desert. The black cat following him had even started losing fur from the prolonged exhaustion. Even someone as formidable as Shane, who possessed what was practically an immortal body, felt like he was about to collapse. Then he saw a massive boulder and a strange person. That strange person was extremely enthusiastic and even gave him delicious food. From Shane's fragmented words, the person understood how he'd ended up there. The stranger burst into a low, mocking laugh. "You were tricked, you fool." Shane hadn't believed it at first, but that person let him enter the boulder. Inside the boulder, he fell asleep and actually saw some visions. It was Caroline, Nelson, and the others conspiring behind his back about how to deal with him. When he emerged again, Shane felt like he'd become even more powerful than before, and one of his eyes had turned cyan. The man who liked to sit on the boulder watching the sky knew Shane had believed him the moment he saw Shane's appearance. Then he said to Shane, "I'll send you back, but you only have three days. After three days, you'll return to my side and continue keeping me company. After all, I find you quite interesting." As he said this, the man's hand was gently stroking the soundly sleeping black cat. Only then did Shane realize that the cat's fur had completely recovered, and the entire cat had become plump and healthy.Although he had intermittent mental issues, his cognition was normal. He knew he'd only been inside that boulder for a short time. A dying cat couldn't possibly have fully recovered its health in such a brief period. While he was still puzzled by this, he suddenly felt the scene before him shift, and he found himself on top of the base. Then he heard Denton's voice. ... At this moment, he stared at Caroline, his eyes filled with burning fury. "Nelson! I want Nelson! Why did he lie to me?" Shane roared in rage. Caroline furrowed her brow. She didn't dare to release Nelson. She could sense that Shane was already on the edge of losing control. Perhaps seeing through Caroline's thoughts, the whites of Shane's eyes suddenly turned blood-red. As he clenched his fists tightly, the entire base seemed to tremble along with him. "We can't fight here. The entire base will be caught in the crossfire." Caroline thought to herself. Looking at Shane before her, she had a splitting headache. They'd sent Shane away because he was an unstable element. In her previous life, she'd dealt with quite a few patients with mental illness. These people seemed fine most of the time, but occasionally, without warning, something would trigger them and they'd suddenly go berserk. Their minds were extremely rigid. When faced with problems, they'd fixate obsessively on one thing and become incredibly persistent about it.
