Upgradable Space: Reborn to Survive the Apocalypse
It was clear the shooter had excellent aim. If Denton had not used his ability in time, that shot would have killed him. Everyone watching felt a chill. They knew the person outside was not to be underestimated. Caroline locked the mobile base door again and hurled several shards of ice into the shadow. Tyler sent out metallic threads tipped like knives to strike. The moment the ice flew, Caroline transformed into steam. A burst of intense heat erupted. Whoever was hiding in the shadow would be forced out, even killed. But no howl of pain followed. Tyler's metallic threads did not catch anything. The man had vanished. At least he was not inside the range of their attacks. Caroline and the others did not see him leave. There was not a single trace. Snow and Raven grew uneasy too. They should have been the first to detect an intruder, but they sensed nothing. This kind of unseen enemy was dangerous. Denton's smell grew stronger. He walked along the wall, hands and feet clawing at it as he moved toward the shadow, as if trying to grab the man first. Tyler frowned and sent his wires out again. This time the wires slithered along the corners and into other shadows. They kept stretching and extending. One shadow after another was covered by the threads, spreading quickly to the next. Soon almost every dark corner around them was wrapped in Tyler's metal wires. His arms had completely vanished, transformed into countless strands of gleaming steel. The space where the enemy could hide was shrinking by the second. The wires moved in total silence, too fast for the eye to follow. After about two minutes, the threads in Tyler's hands suddenly went taut. Caroline and Denton immediately took defensive positions. They couldn't see where the wires ended—only Tyler's trembling arm on this side, shaking from the strain. In the sunlight the metal threads quivered. Where they dove into darkness, they were gone. Moments later Tyler yanked hard. With that pull, someone was hauled out of the shadows. He tried to resist, but his feet were tightly bound by Tyler's wires. The threads had cut into flesh. The struggle in the shadows had been fierce. Blood ran down the wires and pooled on the ground. Unless he cut off his own foot, he had no way to escape. At the moment the man emerged, Denton exclaimed, "Ryan?" The man Tyler had caught was Ryan Cole. He smiled with pure malice. "Yeah. Long time no see, Denton. And you too Tyler." He looked about 24, clean-faced. But his skin was pale, and his eyes were filled with wickedness. If Tyler and Denton had not said he was their teammate before, Caroline would have guessed he had escaped from prison. He gave a terrifying impression. It felt like he was saying, "Next second I will kill you." "How did you end up like this?" Tyler asked, frowning. His voice was cold. He tried to bind Ryan completely with his other metal threads. Then, in a desperate move, Ryan grabbed a long knife and hacked off his own foot without blinking. The front of his foot was severed instantly. Tyler's wire could not extend in time. Caroline did not have time to use an ability either. Ryan was brutal and fast. In the confusion he disappeared again. They scanned the trees, the wall shadows, every corner, sweat breaking on their brows. What surprised them most was where Ryan reappeared. He had slipped into the shadow behind Denton. "Tyler, are you looking for me?" Ryan's voice came from nowhere. A sharp blade pressed against Denton's throat. Because of Denton's foul odor, Caroline and Tyler kept a distance. "Move my finger and Denton dies," Ryan said in a cold voice that sent chills down their spines. Caroline felt sweat on her forehead. The random abilities she had drawn today had not been good. She had tried to reset twice and failed. The only ability left she could use was Mom I Am, but the distance was too close. If Caroline used that ability now, Tyler and Denton might be affected too.
