The two must have tiptoed into her bedroom together, quietly lay down next to her, and waited for the perfect moment just to startle her awake. Even though they were older now and supposedly mature, Caroline still wanted to lightly knock their heads. She quickly scooped Raven into her arms and checked him from head to toe. Smooth fur. No injuries. A healthy shine. His eyes looked brighter and more human-like. Only then did she relax. And she had to admit, Raven looked even cooler now. His eyes had changed—one blue, one gold. A few days ago, the army's canned-food factory had sent them a batch to divide. Caroline had opened one to taste it and found it completely salt-free. So she opened more than a hundred cans for Raven. Raven finished all of them. When he finally stopped, Raven sat quietly on the floor. He looked down at his slightly rounded belly.
