Upgradable Space: Reborn to Survive the Apocalypse
"Alright. I need to head out for a bit. Then we should leave this shelter as soon as we can." Everyone moved into action right away. Caroline would leave first and set up the mobile base. Tyler was responsible for taking Shane far away. Nelson stayed upstairs to rest. Denton would stay behind to watch the place and keep an eye on the little ones. If anything happened to them—though nothing should happen—he'd go get Nelson. Once everything was settled, Nelson gave Shane another shot, then handed him over to Tyler. Right before Caroline left, she gave Nelson a cupcake, the same flavor she had just given Shane. Nelson, who had been exhausted and dragging his feet all day, suddenly lit up with new found energy. "Caroline, you're amazing!" But right when she handed him the cupcake, Caroline felt a glance from the side. She turned and saw Tyler. He was watching her give the cupcake to Nelson. His eyes held a strange mix of emotion, almost like something was flickering there. Caroline didn't think too deeply about it. She simply reached into her storage space, pulled out another cupcake, and held it out to Tyler. "Here. You get one too." Tyler, who was carrying Shane on his back and didn't even like sweets that much, suddenly felt a hint of jealousy. He didn't know what to say. Still, he took the cupcake. And to Caroline's surprise, he ate it right away and finished it in just a few bites. "Yeah, it tastes pretty good." Caroline smiled. Of course it did. These cupcakes were practically limited edition. She had stocked up on them from her favorite bakery right before the apocalypse. Even in her storage space, only a few hundred were left. And who knew if the girl who made them was even still alive now? Every cupcake eaten was one less forever. Tyler and Caroline were just about to leave the shelter when someone called out behind them. It was Alger. Alger rushed over in a few quick steps, almost like he had been guarding the hallway, waiting for them to come out. "Hey, guys."They stopped walking. Alger told them that Nathaniel's recovery must stay secret for now. The team planned to announce a funeral in three days. Caroline and Tyler were smart. They understood right away and agreed to keep this a secret. Alger looked at two with a frown and added, "And ... if you go out during these days, be extra careful. Everyone outside thinks Commander Ball is dead. Things are going to get messy." Caroline and Tyler thanked him and headed downstairs. At the ground floor, they each pulled a car out of their storage space, waved goodbye, and drove off. But not long after Caroline hit the road, she suddenly felt it—she was being followed. Tyler felt it too. Just minutes after leaving, he sensed someone tailing him from behind. Whoever followed them was skillful. Caroline and Tyler both tried to check their mirrors but couldn't see the person clearly. That only confirmed it. Their stalkers were experts. "Well then, let's play," they said at the same time, from two different places. They stepped on the gas. Their cars shot forward, much faster than before. The people following them sped up too. Caroline's driving skills were top-tier. After all, she had learned them while running for her life in her previous life. The weather was so hot that Caroline even turned up the car's air-conditioning. But that was fine, she still had plenty of gas. The apocalypse had been going on for months, and she had barely used any. The road ahead was clear. The government had already cleaned most of it, and she couldn't see a single car. She could drive however she wanted. She tore down the highway like a wild gust of wind. But the people trying to follow her weren't so lucky. The temperature outside had climbed to 122°F. The heat was brutal. Forget chasing Caroline; just standing still in that temperature could knock someone out. When Caroline's car had driven miles ahead, the trackers behind her were close to passing out. They didn't have a car. They didn't have air-conditioning. Their poor legs had to run at full speed the whole way. "Boss, we can't keep going on. We're going to cook out here!" One man, riding a mutant cat, gave his cat a whole bottle of water, then drank one himself. The cat under him twitched in irritation. Cats were difficult to tame even in normal times. It had taken months of effort to train these few mutant cats to act as mounts. If this heat kept up, these cats might throw them off and run for their lives. Their team had only three people. Two men, one woman. They were all riding mutant cats and felt absolutely miserable in the blazing heat.
