Upgradable Space: Reborn to Survive the Apocalypse
But Shane didn't seem to feel any pain, or maybe he just didn't care. Tyler's flying blade and metal wire wrapped around Shane's neck in an instant. The sharp edge cut into his skin, but it still couldn't slice through. This guy was still as terrifying as ever. Caroline stared at the Zero System on her wrist, trying to find another ability she could use. At the same time, Tyler glanced back at Denton. He urged, "Denton, try your—" Before Caroline could refresh a new ability and before Denton could release his power, everything changed. All of this happened in just a few seconds. Shane suddenly spoke. His voice was rough and hoarse, like he hadn't talked in a long time. "Where's Nelson? I want a cupcake." The group, who had been tense the whole time, suddenly noticed something else. Shane's eyes weren't focused. He kept scanning the room, looking for something or someone. Is he looking for Nelson? Denton was just about to rush forward, but Caroline stopped him. Denton blinked at her, as if asking, Should I use my stink or not? Caroline frowned. Her mind raced. She looked at the pale, skinny young man in front of her—his eyes wild, but not murderous. A strange idea flashed through her mind. "Tyler, drop the attack," she said. Tyler looked at her. After a moment of thought, he understood. He clenched his hand. The small blade and steel thread rewound instantly, wrapping around his fingers before fading away. He did leave the tiny blades at the tips of his fingers, though. They looked like sharp metal claws, one on each finger, long and deadly. "Nelson, he's not here." Shane muttered the words, but his voice and face were twisted with frustration. Clearly, he wasn't just upset because he couldn't find Nelson; he was furious because he couldn't find a cupcake. He scratched his head in an anxious, jerky motion. The whole time, he didn't even look at Caroline. That was strange. Before this, Shane seemed very interested in Caroline. He even tried to grab her more than once. Whatever happened between him and Nelson over the past few days must have changed something, but that didn't matter now. Shane looked around in a panic. His fists tightened as if he wanted to punch the wall. He looked like someone having a complete breakdown. His muttering suddenly exploded into a scream. "Where's Nelson?! Where's Nelson?! Cupcake—give me a cupcake!" Caroline reached into her storage space and pulled out a cupcake. It was caramel-cream flavored, stuffed with soft, sweet chestnut filling, something no one should be able to find in an apocalypse. The moment the cupcake appeared, Shane vanished from the doorway. Caroline and Tyler instantly went on high alert and checked on their surroundings. A split second later, Caroline felt a sudden grip clamp around her wrist. Someone had grabbed her. Her other hand moved fast. The ice blade shot forward. And right beside her, Tyler released his metal wire again, sending it whipping out like a strike of silver lightning. The next second, Shane's body appeared again. Caroline's ice blade had cut into his stomach. Blood was already running down, but he didn't seem to care at all. Tyler's metallic thread was wrapped tight around his neck, digging in so deep that drops of blood slid down the wire and fell to the floor. But Shane acted like none of it hurt. He only stared at Caroline's hand in obsession. All that he could see was the cupcake she was holding."Cake ... cake ... " he whispered, completely obsessed. Caroline felt sick from the way he grabbed her hand. She frowned and let go of the cupcake. The little cream cupcake flipped over, frosting side down, about to hit the floor. Right then, Caroline and Tyler both felt their grips suddenly loosen. The man they had stabbed and strangled vanished in an instant. A heartbeat later, a thin, pale figure crouched on the ground. He was holding the tiny cream cupcake in both hands. A huge, blissful smile spread across his face. Like he was handling something precious, he leaned down and slowly licked the frosting. "Yes, a creamy cupcake. A delicious creamy cupcake." Caroline and Tyler looked at each other. They both saw the shock in the other's eyes. How did Shane escape their attacks like that? "Is this what they call a divine power?" Caroline wondered, remembering what she'd seen about him in those future visions. Once again, she felt how terrifying his ability really was. Right now, neither she nor Tyler has any way to kill him.
