Upgradable Space: Reborn to Survive the Apocalypse

Chapter 418 Color Energy

Overall, Caroline was quite satisfied with what she found. To her surprise, she even discovered the stash that the man had been hiding. Inside a cave, there were piles of food, bottled water, snacks, sanitary pads, clothes—basically everything one could need. For ordinary survivors in the apocalypse, this was a treasure trove—enough to sustain three people for at least six months. While checking through the supplies, Caroline realized that most of these items must have been collected by bats under that man's command. Many of them still had claw marks on their surfaces. Without hesitation, she stored everything in her storage space. But when she finished, she noticed something buried beneath the supplies—women's clothing. And many of them looked used. The thought of that man's disgusting face made her stomach churn. She had no idea whether these were things the bats had scavenged from somewhere nearby, or if they belonged to women that man had killed. Either way, it was not something she wanted to dwell on. Caroline left the cave without touching the clothes. She climbed onto Raven's back and headed toward the next location on her list. After checking the last few sites, Caroline decided the open ground beside the coal plant was the best option. The terrain was slightly elevated, and the ground was firm enough to set up a mobile base. It was also on the outskirts, far from any trouble. In such a remote area, neither that naked man nor anyone else would likely find them. If they ever needed extra supplies or had to reach out to the military, they could travel easily. Once the army cleared the streets, driving around would not be an issue. With that settled, Caroline marked the spot and planned to tell the others when she got back. After that, she would deal with the group of infected spreading the plague—wipe them out once and for all—then move everyone to their new home. Lost in thought, she rode swiftly along the road under the night sky. The moon hung high, casting a soft glow across the land. Without the city lights, the stars shimmered brightly overhead. The world around her was silent, save for Raven's steady breathing and the rhythmic thud of his paws against the ground. Suddenly, Caroline stopped. She had arrived at a familiar villa district. She had been here once before—near the end of the deep freeze, during one of her final scavenging runs. She had first learned of this place from a property deed she had found inside one of the safes in a high-rise opposite her old apartment. Those safes had contained all sorts of random items, but one held several property deeds. Each deed had a matching key placed right underneath it, along with a small note. The notes were curious. Each bore a single color: "Red, Orange, Yellow, Green." When Caroline had first come to check these houses, every single one had been empty—no furniture, no decorations, nothing. She had not thought much of it at the time and simply left. But now, with her awakened abilities and her system, she realized something. Her powers involved color energy—red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, violet. Those notes matched the first few colors of that spectrum. Intrigued, Caroline decided to investigate again. She was now standing before the villa marked "Yellow." Without hesitation, she and Raven entered the quiet neighborhood. Using the address from the deed, she found the house and pushed the door open. The moment she stepped inside, her system pulsed faintly in her hand, and the energy within her chest, where her spatial space resided, rippled in response. She quickly opened her system to check, but to her disappointment, nothing had changed. Curious, she entered her space and asked Jasper about it. "The yellow energy feels stronger," Jasper said after a moment, "but the space itself hasn't leveled up." Caroline glanced toward the distant rainbow that represented her abilities. The yellow band glowed brighter than before. Even if she did not fully understand what was happening, she decided to keep going. She visited the other properties, and by the end, every color except "Orange" had grown more vivid and luminous. Jasper, who lived within the space, said it felt more comfortable than before. When Caroline asked what that meant, he gave her a long, rambling explanation she could not quite follow, but finally ended with something clear. "The space has not upgraded as a whole," Jasper told her, "but there's now enough energy for you to unlock two new functions—specific skills only. It's like accessing advanced features early, but it'll consume a lot more energy."
