Upgradable Space: Reborn to Survive the Apocalypse
"Among the few things he said every day," Crow went on, "he mentioned about how this apocalypse could end anytime, as long as that person was satisfied. He said the apocalypse was man-made, not a natural disaster. Nobody believed him, but he said it every single day, dead serious, so I remembered it. Quack quack. "He also said way out west, a meteor fell from the sky—and he escaped from inside it. Quack quack quack." The more Caroline listened, the less sense it made. The guy Crow was describing sounded completely insane. Whatever curiosity she had vanished fast. But what she didn't know was that sometime in the near future, she'd actually meet this man—and her opinion of him would change completely. Other than that, there wasn't much information she found useful. Tyler, though, stood nearby, completely absorbed by every detail Crow shared about the future. Crow talked for over an hour straight. Several times, the guards and ability users outside tried to break in. Tyler kept driving them back. Eventually, Caroline got fed up and dumped a pile of steel bars from her storage space, blocking the door and walls completely. No matter how much noise came from outside, no one was getting in now. So she and Tyler just sat there, listening to Crow ramble about the future. At one point, Tyler asked a few questions about his old mercenary teammates. From Crow, he learned that one of them would arrive in Hornvale in about half a month, looking for him. But in the previous timeline, Obsidian Fang had killed that man before he even had the chance. Hearing that, Tyler's eyes flashed with killing intent. By now, Crow had been under control for nearly two hours. He was straining, trying to regain movement. Fighting through the backlash and pain, he finally forced out a few words. "I ... tell you ... the future ... you ... let me go."His ability could only reset every ten days. He could technically use it in between, but it would tear his body apart. Still, right now, he didn't care about the pain. He was sure if things kept going this way, he'd die here tonight. Caroline glanced at Tyler, silently asking with her eyes if they should hear him out. Honestly, she didn't care much about his future. She'd already lived through a much longer apocalypse, and with her cheat ability now, she was confident she'd handle this one just fine. But since she'd come here with Tyler, she figured she'd let him decide. Still, part of her wanted to keep Crow alive. Because she wanted his power. She'd already copied Crow's ability and checked its details on her system panel. "Special Ability: Limited Foresight "Note: Caroline's luck is unbelievable. She ran into the only person on Earth who can see the future. Unfortunately, he's not exactly likable and barely knows how to use his gift. Such a waste. "Uses left: 3 (Since this power is too strong, the system had to restrict it to prevent overuse.)" She'd copied countless powers before, but this was the first time her system had ever sounded so emotional. The system might be as snarky as her storage space, but it was always truthful and reliable. When she saw that it could only be used three times—and that even the system called it too powerful—she looked at Crow differently. If she could touch him again later, couldn't she just keep refreshing it? Right now, Crow was nervously waiting for their answer. He had no idea Caroline already had her eyes on him. He hadn't used his ability to see his own future, so he didn't know he'd actually survive this encounter—and live a long time afterward. But his cool, untouchable image was already ruined. Because from this night on, Caroline would keep sneaking into his room again and again. The more he tightened his security, the more determined she became—always showing up at midnight like a ghost. Eventually, he got so paranoid he couldn't sleep, developing full-blown insomnia. He even stopped wearing pajamas at night just to avoid embarrassment. Severe sleep deprivation followed. But that was a story for another day. Right now, Tyler thought for a moment, then said, "If his prediction ability actually works, I wouldn't mind seeing what this so-called future looks like."
