Upgradable Space: Reborn to Survive the Apocalypse

Chapter 367 Codename Vixen

Within a minute, the swarm of worms vanished. The steelworms that were climbing the building began jumping down just to escape faster. Countless crimson insects dove into the water, running from something unseen. In just a few minutes, the entire area fell silent. There wasn't a single living steelworm left. Only piles of bodies floated in the water and filled the stairways. It felt as if the whole disaster had been nothing but a nightmare. Tyler still held Lisa by the arm. She could barely stand, her legs shaking. Staring at the shocking scene, she was frozen in disbelief. From every floor, people shouted Nelson's name. They were cheering for the man who saved them all. Lisa finally understood why her boss had wanted Nelson so badly. Tyler turned toward Lisa. She was covered in blood; he glared at her coldly before he let go. Lisa dropped into the water and struggled as she sat up among the steelworm corpses. "Lisa," Tyler looked at her and said flatly, "you weren't part of Obsidian Fang before the apocalypse, were you? Why fight for them now? What did you even gain from it? While you're risking our lives here, did any of them come to save you? Not one. Pathetic." Lisa stared at him, stunned. She hadn't expected him to spare her life or to say that. "W-why didn't you kill me?" she muttered. Tyler looked at her coldly again, his arm shifting into a sharp blade that hovered under her chin. "Killing you is easy," he said. "But I'm giving you a chance." Lisa took a deep breath, confused. "Your code name," Tyler asked, "is it Vixen?" Her brows furrowed. "How do you know that?" Tyler didn't answer. He turned around and walked away. "Tyler!" she shouted. "Our bet isn't over! I haven't lost!"But he didn't look back. During their fight, Tyler had finally recognized who she really was. When he asked if she hadn't been part of Obsidian Fang before the apocalypse, it wasn't casual, but a test. She didn't answer, but her face gave it away. That one look was all he needed to confirm his guess. Her identity was clear to him now. It was her fighting style that exposed her. Mercenaries like them rarely showed their faces. Most only knew each other by code names. Sometimes, when Tyler and Denton took on dangerous missions, they even used fake names themselves. He remembered one mission in particular, one that had almost killed them both. In the middle of the chaos, someone from another mercenary group had slipped him a note. It was a warning that saved their lives. The name on that note was Vixen. Letting her go today was his way of returning that favor. And by walking away, he'd left something behind: a seed of doubt planted deep in Lisa's heart. What she did with it next would be her choice. Building B wasn't refusing to help Lisa. They simply couldn't. Crow still hadn't woken up. Maybe it was his age, or maybe the mutation had hit him harder than the others, but one thing was for sure: he lay unconscious, unresponsive. Some of the mutants recruited after the Obsidian Fang was formed began to lose patience. When they realized Crow wasn't waking up, that the insect disaster had faded, and that Lisa had left, they turned on the group. Dyson had been captured. Building B had fallen into chaos. Lisa watched Tyler disappear into the distance. She glanced back toward Building B, jaw clenched tight, lost in thought. Two minutes passed. With a deep breath, she raised her hand and summoned a massive mutant centipede. She climbed onto its back and rode across the shallow water. She didn't return to Building B. She left and headed toward the horizon. When Tyler let her go, she had seen the look in his eyes: disdain. That brief flash of contempt struck her harder than any weapon. In that moment, Lisa finally understood something: she was never meant to live under anyone's command. When the apocalypse began, she'd been lost and afraid. Crow's ability—Foresight—had convinced her to join the Obsidian Fang. But now, she had her own power, stronger than ever. Why was she still foolishly working for someone else? Lisa suddenly realized how foolish she had been. "This bet was nothing but stupid," she muttered to herself while lying on the back of the mutant centipede. She let out a bitter laugh. "Coming here at all is a joke." In that moment, her mind was clear. She would leave the Obsidian Fang behind and build an empire of her own—one that belonged only to her. She lifted her head toward the gray sky and whispered, "Tyler, next time we meet, let's settle this for real." Then after a pause, her voice softened. "Or maybe next time, we won't be enemies. Maybe we could even be friends." ... Meanwhile, Tyler returned upstairs just in time to see Caroline stumble, nearly losing her balance.
