Upgradable Space: Reborn to Survive the Apocalypse
After finishing her dessert, Caroline took a nap in the house. When she woke up, darkness had already fallen. The moment she stepped outside, her two pets rushed to greet her. Raven wagged his tail like crazy, and Jet flew straight into her arms. "Dear Human! I missed you so much!" Clearly, Jet had been binge-watching those palace dramas again. Since he leveled up, Caroline had been messing with the little tuft of feathers on top of Jet's head. She'd smooth it out, let it bounce back into a question mark shape, wobbling around. It never failed to make her laugh. Raven, however, surprised her. He nudged her leg with his head, wagging his tail, as if he wanted her to check something. After a round of cuddles, Jet hovered in the air. "Human, look! Something weird is growing in the hydroponics!" Caroline noticed Jet's face had turned purple. It was like someone had sprayed him with purple ink. She raised an eyebrow. Something weird? She hurried to the balcony. The hydroponics rack had always been there. Her storage space could grow all kinds of vegetables, and they'd even get a boost, like a cabbage sprouting taller than a person. But mutant plants? No way. She'd tried planting mutant seeds from the army in her storage space, but nothing grew. Probably because the storage space fed on mutant plants itself. Luckily, every time she harvested crops inside, she got extra seeds, so she could keep growing them endlessly. The army seeds worked great, giving her a solid harvest. Regular seeds soaked in acid rain? Not a single one sprouted. Could it be ... When she went out to the balcony, she found a total mess. Purple liquid was splattered everywhere—on the floor, on the rack.As she got closer, the rack sprayed another burst of purple goo, making a weird "Ah, ptooey!" sound. Caroline froze. A cactus-like plant had shot up two feet tall, and two dragon fruits dangled from it. That "Ah, ptooey!" noise? It came from the fruits themselves. Anything alive that got near got a spit attack. She didn't know whether to laugh. Finally, she'd grown a mutant plant, but cleaning up all that dragon fruit spit would be a nightmare. In the end, she just waved her hand and shoved the mutant plant into her storage space, leaving it for Jasper to deal with. She could already picture him next time—a dusty, purple-faced cat. Hmm, no big deal. One cat treat, and he'd be back to obedient form. By the time she finished cleaning, it was almost eight in the evening. Then, there was a knock at the door. Tyler stood there, looking exhausted. "I just got back from Building B. Got some stuff I want to show you." At Tyler's place, a few people were sitting around the table. He'd brought back only a handful of items: a gold coin, a notebook, a folder stamped "Confidential", a few photos, and a vial of blue liquid. The photos were taken with his own equipment. Tyler pulled out the folder and notebook first. Inside, both were packed with info about mutant humans. Apparently, Building B had figured out a way to make humans evolve, tied to other mutant creatures. The notes even claimed a few mutant humans were already there. Denton scratched his chin. "Sounds like total nonsense to me." Caroline, knowing there were no mutant humans, asked, "Why do you say that?" He shrugged. "Me, Tyler, and you—we're all tough, but we're not mutants. Those guys from Building B? Obsidian Fang's crew? Honestly, they're just normal people." People here were just that straightforward and confident.Tyler nodded. "I'm not buying it either. The army hasn't reported any mutant humans yet." It all came down to odds. If mutant humans were real, the army would've noticed, as they had plenty of shelters and even connections with other countries. That kind of international contact actually happened. During a disaster that big, everyone put their differences aside and focused on handling the crisis. The world had never worked together like this before. If mutant humans existed, Francis definitely would've heard about it by now.
