Stronger Every Time I Die

Chapter 674 The Truth Beneath the Surface

With his back to Arthur, Solivair asked, “Arthur, do you believe in luck and instinct?” Arthur pressed his lips together, offering no reply. Luck—something so vague and intangible—was not something Arthur believed in. He believed in relying on himself. As for instinct, that he did have. And it had proven accurate more often than not. Solivair didn’t wait for an answer. He wasn’t bothered. He simply kept talking. “Every time you’ve faced danger, no matter how desperate the situation, you’ve always come out alive—or someone else took the hit for you.” “And this time was no different.” He turned to look at Arthur. “You carry an enormous amount of luck with you. And my instincts weren’t wrong. Even with someone coming at you with a knife, and two others firing guns from a distance—you still walked away and now you’re standing here, talking to me.” Arthur asked flatly, “And what if your instincts were wrong? What if I really had died?” The question circled back to where they started. Solivair let out a sigh. He sat back down across from Arthur and raised his teacup for another sip. “I’ve been tangled up with you for so long now, and yet you’re always the one leading me by the nose.” “I want to find Lynn, of course I do. But I’ve searched the world over and never found her.” “Maybe… you’re just lying to save your own life.” There was a trace of melancholy in his voice and expression as he finished. He had never been a good father. He wasn’t a good man, either. But his love for Lynn ran deep—deeper than blood, deeper than bone. Maybe he had simply gone about it all wrong. Maybe that’s why she left. Arthur suddenly smiled. He shook his head. “You’re wrong. I’ve never lied to you about Lynn.” Solivair jolted to his feet.“What did you just say?!” His whole body trembled. He said Arthur hadn’t lied. That meant—Arthur really had found news of Lynn! After three years of searching, Solivair had prepared himself for the worst. But now… He knew Arthur wouldn’t lie about something like this. Not with the power and position he held now—there was no reason to. Arthur set down his teacup and looked Solivair straight in the eye. “I found Lynn.” “What?!” Solivair nearly leapt out of his skin. His joy was written all over his face as he rushed to Arthur’s side. “You really found her? Where is she? Tell me—please, tell me where she is!” Arthur stared back but didn’t speak. The moment he thought of Ning’er’s innocent, pure eyes, he couldn’t bring himself to reveal Lynn’s whereabouts. Solivair quickly added, “If you tell me where she is, I’ll give you anything you want. Even my life.” His voice was resolute—no hesitation, no doubt. Arthur let out a cold chuckle. “And what exactly do you think you have left that could interest me?” Solivair froze. He was right. Arthur had everything now—power, status. Most of his enemies had already been dealt with. If anything, Solivair was the last one standing. After a pause, Arthur said, “There’s one more question. From the Lovaris family.”The moment he mentioned them, Solivair’s hand paused midair. His arms slowly dropped to his sides. His whole body deflated, like the air had been sucked out of him. “Ask.” Arthur looked him dead in the eye. “Was Mia’s sister’s death connected to you?” Solivair shook his head. “No. It wasn’t me.” Arthur’s expression darkened. “You’d better tell the truth.” Solivair paused, then said, “It was Finley.” “Finley?” Arthur was surprised. Solivair nodded and began to explain. “Mia’s younger sister was two years younger than Finley. Back then, the Tremo family and the Lovaris family were close allies—old family friends. Finley used to visit them often.” “One day, he happened to meet their youngest daughter. She’d never been introduced to outsiders before. Her health was poor from birth—frail and sickly—but she was a beautiful child. Finley liked her instantly.” “After returning from that visit, Finley couldn’t stop thinking about her. The next day, he brought her all kinds of new toys to play with.” “That day, for some reason, the two of them snuck off. They went to play by the river.” Here, Solivair paused. He closed his eyes before continuing. “While they were playing, the little girl slipped and fell into the water. Finley… he was too scared. He didn’t save her.”
