Stronger Every Time I Die
Wake up. No one knew if they would. The doors to the emergency room stayed shut. Even after the top specialist had entered, not a single update had come out. It was like they’d vanished into a void. Arthur shook his head. He had no appetite at all. He turned to Ashley and said, “I’m not hungry. Ashley, please, you need to eat something. Don’t exhaust yourself.” Over the course of just one day, Ashley had visibly become haggard. She had no idea how many times she’d cried. Her eyes were swollen, her whole body drained of energy. She shook her head. “I can’t eat.” She didn’t know—if something really happened to them, what would she do? Arthur had been blaming himself the whole time. He didn’t know—if the worst happened, how would he ever explain it to Ashley? And what about Mr. Hugo, Mr. Mateo? They had always genuinely cared for him, always stood by his side—and now, because of him, they were lying behind those doors, clinging to life. Arthur had been silent the entire day. He couldn’t think about anything else. Over and over again, he just kept praying: Please, please, let them be okay. Taylor and Natalie, having heard the news, arrived at the emergency room doors too. They were just as frantic—but powerless to help. All they could do was offer comfort to Arthur and Ashley and silently pray, begging the heavens to spare them. Finally, after what felt like forever, the doors to the emergency room moved. Everyone shot to their feet! They rushed forward as the doctor emerged. “Doctor—how are they?! How are they doing?!” Arthur was pale and panicked, gripping the doctor’s hand so tightly that his palms were sweating. The doctor, exhausted, took off his glasses, but there was a smile in his eyes. He knew Arthur was anxious, so he didn’t beat around the bush. “Fortunately, they’re all out of immediate danger.” Hearing this, everyone’s hearts finally dropped from their throats. They exhaled all at once. Their tense bodies suddenly relaxed, and they nearly collapsed to the ground. Taylor and Natalie rushed to catch them, helping them into the seats nearby. Arthur and Ashley didn’t forget to thank the doctor again and again. After a quick explanation, the doctor turned and went back into the room. He still had work to do. He had been urgently summoned by Wind—and if Mr. Wind had personally called him, whoever was lying in that room must be someone he couldn’t afford to neglect. Anyone Mr. Wind personally looked after must have an extraordinary identity. He had to be meticulous—there was no room for error. Only now did Arthur, Ashley, Taylor, and Natalie start to feel the hunger gnawing at their stomachs. They hadn’t eaten anything all day. Their bodies were screaming for food. But earlier, anxiety and dread had pushed aside any thought of eating. Wind brought in the food at just the right time. Seeing the warm meals laid out, the three of them couldn’t resist anymore—they dug in, eating ravenously. The next morning. Hugo, Mr. Mateo, Spencer, and Nancy had been moved into regular hospital rooms.Arthur and the others stayed close, watching over them, waiting for them to open their eyes. Though they were no longer in critical care, they still hadn’t woken up through the night. The doctor said they’d wake in the morning. They waited, and finally, their patience was rewarded. All four opened their eyes, one by one. The moment Nancy saw Ashley and Natalie, tears immediately poured down her cheeks. “Ashley… Natalie… I thought I’d never see you again…” Ashley and Natalie were each by Nancy’s bedside, gripping her hands tightly as their tears flowed again. The swelling from all their crying the day before hadn’t even gone down—and now, they were crying once more. Arthur gently held Ashley’s shoulders, looking at Nancy with guilt in his eyes. “I’m sorry. This is all my fault. I dragged you into this.” It was a phrase Arthur had repeated countless times already. Nancy waved it off lovingly. “Silly child. What are you talking about?” “We’re a family. What’s this about dragging anyone down?” She smiled gently—just like a real mother. Spencer heard this and added with a chuckle, “If anything, we should thank you for showing up when you did. You pulled us back from the edge of death!” “Exactly,” Hugo chimed in. “Arthur, stop blaming yourself. None of this was your fault. It was that Finley. None of us expected him to be this bold. We let our guard down.” As soon as he mentioned Finley, Hugo immediately turned to Taylor. “Taylor, did Finley do anything to you?” After being kidnapped, his biggest worry had been Taylor. Finley had shown he was reckless—there was no way he’d spare Taylor. Taylor’s eyes welled with tears.
