Stronger Every Time I Die
He’d been so nervous before the test, waking up at the crack of dawn to prepare. Now he couldn’t help but wonder—Was all that stress for nothing? Even though Arthur’s initiation into Heaven’s Cult had gone absurdly smoothly, Ashley still stepped forward with a heartfelt smile. “Arthur, congratulations!” She couldn’t help but feel happy for him. … The next morning— Arthur and Ashley were startled awake by loud drumming and the clanging of gongs outside. “What’s with all the noise?” Ashley asked groggily. Arthur rubbed his eyes. “No idea.” They got dressed quickly and stepped outside—only to be completely stunned by what they saw. Red. Bright red, everywhere. The entire courtyard was draped in red silk. Not just their yard—Arthur looked out and saw that all of Heaven Island had been transformed into a sea of red. It was like the world had turned crimson overnight. Just outside, a group of elders were banging drums and gongs, singing joyfully. The mood was more festive than the Lunar New Year. Ashley blinked. “Wait… is Heaven Island celebrating New Year early or something?” But there were still months to go before that. Before they could puzzle it out, the same friendly elders who’d once brought them pastries came rushing over, beaming. “Arthur! I never imagined you’d turn out to be the old man’s real grandson!” “Kid, you have no idea—ever since the boss settled here on Heaven Island, he’s been thinking about you day and night!”“That’s right! No wonder your name sounded familiar—I remember now! He used to mention it!” “Fate’s amazing, isn’t it? His long-lost grandson, showing up here of all places! It’s destiny!” “Hahaha! My wife’s right!” They all chimed in excitedly, clearly more thrilled than if they’d found their own long-lost kin. Only now did Arthur truly realize—his grandfather had never stopped thinking about him. He looked at their cheerful, festive outfits and asked, “So… what’s all this about?” The old woman beamed. “Oh, this? The boss found his grandson again—that’s a huge deal! Of course we’ve gotta celebrate!” She waved the big red flower in her hand. “All this? The boss had us stay up all night to get everything ready!” The old man added emotionally, “I’ve been with the boss over ten years… it’s been forever since I saw him this happy.” “Exactly. He’s not young anymore, and he hasn’t had any of his kids around. Miss Nina’s sweet, but she’s been through a lot too. Now that you’re here, the boss has been too excited to sleep—he’s been planning this celebration since last night!” “That’s right! He gave us strict orders—tonight’s welcome banquet has to be grand! Nothing less!” Hearing all this, Arthur finally felt just how much he meant to his grandfather. Ten years apart—and what remained between them was a deep, unspoken bond. Grandpa wasn’t the type to say how he felt, especially not to another man. But in his heart, he’d always held on to the grandson he loved. And Arthur knew that. That was enough. While they were still chatting, Drake and Falls came walking up, grinning from ear to ear. The moment Drake saw Arthur, his smile widened even more. He gave Arthur a solid clap on the shoulder. “Kid, I can’t believe you’re actually the boss’s grandson!” Then he added, a little sheepishly, “Good thing I didn’t lose my mind and throw you off the island when I had the chance. If I had, the boss would’ve skinned me alive!”Even the usually stern Drake cracked a rare joke. The old man nearby laughed. “Please! Everyone knows Mr. Drake’s as fair as they come. Of course he’d stand on Arthur’s side!” The group burst out laughing in cheerful agreement. Drake chuckled again. “And thank god I passed Arthur on the evaluation yesterday. If I hadn’t, I don’t think the boss would’ve let me off easy!” That drew another wave of laughter. Then Drake took a large box from Falls and handed it to Arthur. “Arthur, this is from the boss—he had these outfits made especially for you two. You’ll wear them to tonight’s banquet. They’re… festive.” Arthur took the box, curious. He opened it for a peek. Oh boy. Yeah. Festive was right. Anyone else would’ve thought they were wedding outfits.
