Stronger Every Time I Die

Chapter 613 What Was Lost

At the mention of Kelly, Benjamin let out a long sigh, his eyes filled with regret. He looked off into the distance and spoke slowly. “Your aunt insisted on studying abroad when she was a teenager, even though I was completely against it.” As he continued, his voice grew heavy with remorse. “Back then, I was so focused on worrying about Kelly’s safety that I never stopped to consider her feelings. I was dead set on stopping her from leaving.” “But Kelly said there were more opportunities overseas. She wanted to make her own way. We had a huge falling out because of it, and I forbade anyone in the Gray family from even mentioning her name.” By now, tears of regret had already begun to fall from Benjamin’s eyes. “I never imagined that the next time I saw her… she’d fallen for that irresponsible man, Solivair. Our relationship only got worse after that.” He let out a long, painful sigh. “When I found out she’d stolen the family’s ID documents and registered her marriage with Solivair behind my back… I was so angry I coughed up blood and had to be hospitalized. Then she died—just like that—and I was left drowning in regret.” With his back turned to Arthur and Ashley, Benjamin was silently weeping. He wanted to make things right, but his Kelly was already gone. It was a wound he would carry for the rest of his life. “Later, that ungrateful son of mine—John—took over Gray Corporation and stripped me of all my authority. He kicked me out of the house and dumped me in the woods outside Mose City. I lived out there for years!” When Benjamin spoke of John, his tone turned sharp and furious. “One day, I came across a group of hunters who’d wandered into the forest. They were surrounded by wolves, and I managed to lead them to safety. That’s when I found out—they were all outcasts. Some had been framed and were on the run. Others had been pushed to the edge, abused and broken. They’d come to the forest simply to survive.I helped them escape, but their enemies came after them fast. We were out of options, so we grabbed a few wrecked boats and set out to sea.We drifted for who knows how long. When we were starving, we dove into the ocean to catch fish. When we were thirsty, we drank what little water we could. Just when we were ready to give up, fate brought us here. This island gave us new life. It was like an oasis in a desert—magical, full of vitality. That’s why I named it Heaven Island. We fought to survive. There were deadly battles with the wild animals here. The ones who made it through… had all stared death in the face more than once. Later, we discovered the island had abundant resources. To make a life for ourselves, we started building ships. Many lives were lost in the process, but eventually, we found a way back to the mainland. That’s when I founded Heaven’s Cult. I wanted those who left the island to be blessed by the heavens… and return safely. Three years ago, when I went to visit Nina, I discovered she was locked up by Solivair—living like a prisoner. She was already in a fragile mental state. I was so furious I took her by force. After that, I wanted to destroy Solivair, but Nina stopped me. It took three full years of treatment for her to become the girl you see today.” As Benjamin recounted his story in fragments, Arthur finally understood the full picture. He fell silent for a long time. Their lives—grandfather and grandson—had both been full of hardship and loss. Eventually, Arthur asked quietly, “Is it because Nina still cares about Solivair?” It had been over a decade. But knowing the kind of man his grandfather was, Arthur couldn’t believe he would’ve spared Solivair—especially after what he did to both Kelly and Nina. Benjamin nodded. “Nina… she’s just too kind.” Arthur stared at his grandfather’s back, finally voicing the question he’d buried deep in his heart. “Grandpa… with all the power you have now, why didn’t you come looking for me?” If only he had. Arthur wouldn’t have had to suffer through all those years… wouldn’t have had to endure all that abuse. Benjamin sighed deeply. “At this level, you don’t get to do whatever you want. Back then, my position wasn’t stable. If I’d come looking for you, I might’ve ended up hurting you instead.I thought… well, John and Raelynn are your biological parents. They wouldn’t treat you that badly, right?I left the island this time just to find you. But I didn’t expect you’d already come to Heaven Island on your own.” Then something occurred to Benjamin. He turned to Arthur with concern in his voice. “By the way—John and Raelynn… did they treat you well?” He knew they had adopted a son—Zac. At the time, he’d strongly opposed it. But back then, John had already taken over Gray Corporation, and his protests were meaningless.
