Stronger Every Time I Die

Chapter 496 The Siege of the Wolves

Ashley didn't know if the wolves had really left, but in such a short span of time, they likely hadn't strayed far. The smoke and scent could easily draw them back. A few other animals didn't scare them; the rugged stone walls around made it difficult for animals to enter, and there were traps laid out as well. But the intelligence of these wolves was evidently higher than they had anticipated. Their endurance also far surpassed expectations! They were no ordinary beasts. Just yesterday, they had killed so many of the wolves' companions. The wolves' desire for revenge might be even stronger than they imagined! Arthur, while keeping a vigilant watch, comforted Ashley, "Listen, head back to the cabin. You're injured and weak; if danger comes, you can't protect yourself. I'd be too distracted taking care of you." To ensure Ashley would obediently hide in the cabin, Arthur couldn't focus on anything else. Hearing this, Ashley pursed her lips and finally fell silent. She knew Arthur was only trying to protect her. But he wasn't without reason. Her body hadn't recovered from the excessive blood loss; she had barely managed through yesterday's journey, compounded by the wound on her arm. Staying by Arthur's side would indeed only burden him. Worry filled Ashley's eyes as she looked at Arthur. She gripped his hand tightly and earnestly said, "Arthur, you must take care of yourself!" Arthur nodded, "Don't worry, I know." As soon as Arthur spoke, he suddenly sensed a dangerous presence! Without hesitation, he pushed Ashley toward the cabin, "Quick! Lock the doors and windows! Don't come out!" Arthur's shout immediately put everyone on alert. Ashley didn't dare delay any longer and quickly returned to the cabin. Though she didn't understand why Arthur had suddenly become so urgent, she knew he had his reasons.Almost the moment Arthur finished speaking, a chorus of wolf howls swept in from all directions! "Wolves! Wolves are here!" the guards exclaimed, gripping their guns tighter, their eyes filled with a fierce intent. Everyone recognized them as the wolves from the night before! They were stained with dark blood—their own companions' blood! Some of it, perhaps, belonged to Arthur and his group! Ashley shuddered. The fear of being bitten by a wolf hadn't faded, and she instantly wanted to run out to Arthur's side! She worried about his safety! But after barely taking two steps, a wave of dizziness hit her. Ashley quickly leaned against the door frame, stopping herself. No, it wouldn't work. In her current state, she couldn't protect Arthur. She would only be a burden! Ashley shook her head, forced herself to close and lock all the doors and windows of the cabin to ensure the wolves couldn't break in. Meanwhile, Ashley hurried to the door of the cabin to peek through the crack. If they were overwhelmed, she'd immediately open the door to let everyone in. While it might not hold for long, it could buy some time. Arthur had considered having everyone hide in the cabin. But after all, a cabin is just a cabin, not reinforced concrete. If the wolves really bypassed the traps below the cliffs and breached their safe zone, the cabin wouldn't last long. Wolves' teeth are very sharp, and so many of them could tear through the wood. Once the cabin was breached, they would be trapped. Almost as soon as Ashley had secured the doors and windows, the wolves launched their attack. Countless wolves rushed and leapt down the cliffs. Below the cliffs, numerous traps awaited, and the wolves fell into them without exception. 'Splat!' One by one, the wolves fell into the traps, the spikes instantly piercing through their bellies and skulls.Instantly, the valley was filled with a thick scent of blood. The eyes of the wolves still on the cliffs turned blood-red as they saw their companions fall. Their howls grew louder. The alpha wolf let out a high howl, and the wolves immediately halted their attack. Then, without hesitation, they retreated down the mountain, disappearing from sight. The hands of the people gripping their guns relaxed.
