Stronger Every Time I Die
Zane spoke with the weight of sincerity, his expression full of heartfelt concern for Zac. "But…" Zac still wanted to say something, only to be interrupted. Zane's voice turned sorrowful. "Zac, I've failed you as a father all these years. I never gave you the love you deserved. Now, all I want is to do what I can to protect you. I just hope you can fulfill this small wish of mine." As he spoke, Zane even took a step back and, with a rare solemnity, bowed deeply to Zac. The gesture shocked Zac. He stood up in a panic, hurrying to help him up. He was the son, and Zane was the father. How could he possibly accept such a grand bow from him? But Zane was determined. Having set his mind on having Zac introduce him to Solivair, he would not back down so easily. Especially since he had already bowed, there was no taking it back. "If you don't agree… then I won't get up!" Zane's tone left no room for negotiation. Zac tried several times, but no matter how he persuaded him, Zane stubbornly remained bowing. Helpless, Zac could only sigh and relent. "Alright then." The moment Zac gave his answer, Zane's face lit up with unrestrained joy. "You've agreed? Zac, you've agreed?" His smile this time was truly from the heart. But it was not the warmth of fatherly love. It was the joy of success. Zac could only nod bitterly. "But, Dad, you must promise me that you will always prioritize your safety. Whatever happens, you cannot risk yourself." He paused before adding softly, "It doesn't matter what happens to me, but you still have your family. And my mother." At the mention of his mother, Zac's eyes dimmed. Zane might show him care, but as for Renee, that was another story. Every scheme, every calculation, he remembered them all clearly. But no matter what, she was still his biological mother. And up until now, she had never truly harmed him. Of course, Zane barely listened to a word Zac said. The moment he finished speaking, Zane nodded eagerly. "Alright, alright. I understand. I know what I'm doing."Hah. As if I would ever sacrifice myself for Zac. If anything, should the situation arise, he might even use Zac one last time. After all, he already had two sons he had raised at his knees since birth. As for Zac? He felt nothing for him. In Zane's heart, he had never truly regarded Zac as his son. His sons were meant to stand above others, born to rule, ruthless and cunning. Not someone raised in a backwater family like Zac, who was utterly unworthy. All these years, Zane had known Zac was raised in the Gray family but never cared to even glance his way. If not for Renee forcing a photo of Zac in front of him, he would not have even known what his son looked like. Frankly, he did not care. In his eyes, it would have been best if Zac stayed in South City his entire life. Never stepping into his world, never staining his vision, and never standing in the way of his ambitions. Renee had brought Zac to Seacity without his permission, and for that, Zane had raged at her fiercely. He had even refused to see her for several months afterward. If not for the fact that Zac had caught the eye of the Tremo family, he would not have bothered to meet him at all. A man like him, who stood at the pinnacle of power, how could any random people be worthy of his time? Yet laughably, Zac was still immersed in the joy of being acknowledged by his 'father,' unable to extricate himself. Unaware that in Zane's eyes, he was nothing but a tool to be used. At the end of it all, Zac hesitated, then made a small request. "Dad, I'd like to see…" He paused, the word 'Mom' on the tip of his tongue, before quietly correcting himself. "My foster mother and my three sisters." Zane's expression stiffened. Instinctively, he wanted to refuse. But remembering that he had yet to secure his connection with the Tremo family, he forcibly swallowed his rejection. Seeing his hesitation, Zac hurried to add, "I'll wear a mask and a hat. I won't let your family see my face." John's death had left a deep mark on Zac's heart. The kindness he'd received from the Gray family over the years, he had never forgotten. Especially after coming to Seacity and facing setback after setback, the warmth of the Gray family had only grown more precious in his memory. Today's parting might be long-term. Solivair had agreed to let him attend any university he wished. But after graduation, he would need to stay by Solivair's side and become his blade. Wherever Solivair pointed, he would strike, without hesitation, without choice. And this farewell, who knew when he would ever see them again? Thus, Zac thought he would do everything in his power to leave them with a little more.
