Stronger Every Time I Die
Arthur stealing Zac’s suit from last year. Whether or not he had a habit of taking Zac’s things, no one could say for sure. But a formal suit was something that could only be worn once. The legitimate son of the Gray family, stealing a suit that someone else had already worn? It was beyond disgraceful. The tide of whispers in the banquet hall shifted instantly. "No wonder the Gray family kept him hidden. If I had such an embarrassing son, I wouldn’t want to take him out in public either." "Exactly. Stealing a suit is shameful enough, but a used one?" "I knew this suit looked familiar. Mr. Zac wore it for his birthday banquet last year." John, Raelynn, Rosie, and Susie exchanged uneasy glances, yet not one of them spoke up in Arthur’s defense. Perhaps, in their hearts, they had already subconsciously decided that Arthur was disposable. If they defended Arthur now, it would humiliate Zac in front of everyone. Julie couldn’t take it anymore. She rushed forward, stepping protectively in front of Arthur, her voice filled with urgency. "Zac, there must be some misunderstanding. Arthur isn’t someone who would steal. Are you sure you didn’t give him that suit?" By the end of her sentence, her tone was almost pleading. If Zac admitted that he had simply forgotten and this was all a mistake, everything would be resolved. The Gray family and Zac all stared at Julie in shock. What was wrong with her? In this kind of setting, she was defending Arthur? If Zac admitted to making a mistake now, it would make him look petty, unable to tolerate Arthur’s presence. After what had happened yesterday, how would Zac continue to survive in high society? Arthur was also surprised that she had spoken up for him again. But his expression quickly returned to indifference. He didn’t need it. Zac quickly regained his composure. Taking a deep breath, he fixed his gaze on Julie, as if silently questioning her. Julie, why aren’t you standing by me anymore? Do you not care about me? Julie avoided his eyes. He was still the little brother she had cherished for eight years. He had saved her life. Her instincts told her to protect him, but Arthur was her brother too. And now that she knew what Arthur had suffered all these years, she realized how little she had done to protect him. Seeing her avert her gaze, Zac’s expression filled with hurt. He no longer looked at Julie and instead turned to address the crowd. "Julie, this suit was a gift from Dad, something he put a lot of thought into. How could I just give it away? And even if I were to give someone a suit, I would buy them a brand-new one, not something I had already worn. I checked my wardrobe just yesterday, and this suit was still hanging there. And now, it’s on him." Zac’s words didn’t need to be finished. Everyone understood what he was implying. Julie’s heart sank. She turned to John and Raelynn, silently pleading for them to intervene. Raelynn opened her mouth but then turned her face away, saying nothing. John hesitated for a moment before finally speaking. "Arthur, if you needed a suit, you could have just asked me. You’re my son too. There was no need to…" Arthur let out a sharp laugh. Three days ago, they had come to see him, pretending to care, bringing him gifts. And now, it had barely been a few days before their true colors showed. Julie felt despair creeping in. She stared at John in disbelief. By saying this, he had already decided that Arthur had stolen the suit. The room was filled with the most powerful figures in high society. By branding Arthur a thief in front of them, how was he supposed to have a future in this world? Raelynn’s eyes turned red. She wanted to say something, but in the end, she looked away. He was still her biological son. If it didn’t hurt Zac, she would have wanted him to be okay. But he had gone up against Zac. Zac may have been adopted, but since his arrival, the Gray family had been so much happier. He was obedient and considerate, always knowing exactly what to say to make her feel warm inside. Compared to him, Arthur fell short in every way. She couldn’t stand Arthur’s air of poverty. She disliked his timid nature. Arthur was not someone who would amount to anything. Her future depended on Zac. So as long as Arthur opposed Zac, she would always choose Zac. Just like the last time, when she learned Arthur was being bullied… Arthur no longer looked at John. He stepped out from behind Julie, meeting Zac’s gaze directly. "Zac, are you sure this suit was stolen by me?"
