Stronger Every Time I Die

Chapter 401 A Brother’s Trickery

Arthur said, "Do you even hear yourself right now?" He paused, then let out a small cough. "Ahem. What I mean is, since they're my parents too, isn't it normal for a son to take care of his parents when he starts making money?" Arthur spoke in a coaxing tone. "A million bucks is nothing to me, but if you send it to our parents, they won’t have to work so hard anymore. They can finally enjoy life a little earlier. Isn't that a good thing?" At this moment, all traces of sorrow had vanished from Arthur's face. Taylor hesitated. What Arthur was saying… made sense. His parents were ordinary working-class folks, barely making ends meet on their modest salaries. Sure, he didn’t need them to pay for his tuition anymore, but they had already given everything they had to support him. They barely had any savings left. They were still working hard just to cover their own expenses. If they had this money, their lives would be so much easier. It had always been his dream to start making money as soon as possible so he could give his parents a better life. That was why he worked so hard in school. But… this was Arthur’s money. He had willingly taken a knife for Arthur. That was his own choice. How could he accept money for that? Arthur saw the hesitation on Taylor’s face and smiled slightly. At least he was making progress. Seeing through Taylor’s thoughts, Arthur pressed on, "This isn’t about repaying you for saving my life. I know you saved me because we’re brothers, not for money. This money isn't for you—it's for our parents. If I’m out here living the good life while our parents are still working themselves to the bone, do you really think I’d be okay with that?" When Arthur emphasized "our parents" and "working themselves to the bone," it struck a nerve with Taylor. His parents weren’t exactly suffering, but they had worked hard their entire lives. As their son, he truly wanted them to enjoy their later years in comfort. Arthur pressed Taylor’s hand down, stopping him from returning the money. "Just listen to me and send it to our parents. And hey, while you’re at it, put in a good word for me, will you?" Taylor’s hand was trapped under Arthur’s firm grip. But something still felt off. He suddenly looked up at Arthur. "Weren’t you just sad a moment ago?" He had been feeling guilty for upsetting him, but somehow, in just a few sentences, the conversation had completely changed course. "Huh?" Arthur acted as if he had only just realized. Then, almost instantly, he switched gears. Arthur suddenly put on an indignant expression. "Exactly! Because you refuse to acknowledge that I’m our parents’ son! You won’t even let me take care of them! You don’t see me as your brother at all!" His tone grew more forceful with every word. Taylor flinched. Startled, he hurriedly said, "No, no, no! I never said that! I, Taylor, never go back on my word!" He even raised his hand, ready to swear on it. Arthur quickly cut him off. "Then say it! Isn’t it normal for me to take care of my own parents?" Taylor froze for a second, then instinctively nodded. Of course, taking care of your parents was the right thing to do. That went without saying. Arthur kept pushing. "Then if I ask you to send money to my parents on my behalf, shouldn’t you do it?" Taylor blinked, completely thrown off. For a moment, he wasn’t sure whether he should nod or shake his head. Arthur sighed. Taylor was really getting stubborn.Ever since he got injured, he wasn’t as easy to fool as before. Arthur’s mouth was getting dry from all this talking. At this point, he gave up and went full shameless mode. He plopped himself onto Taylor’s couch with a lazy stretch. "If you don’t let me take care of my parents, then I’m not your brother anymore." That did it. Taylor panicked. "No, no, no! I’ll do it! I’ll transfer the money, okay?!" Arthur was satisfied. He nodded and patted Taylor on the shoulder. "Now that’s my big bro!" Something about Arthur’s smug look made Taylor feel uneasy. Why did it feel like he had just been tricked? …Forget it. Taylor gave up resisting. His brain had never worked as fast as Arthur’s. If they kept talking, he’d probably just fall into another trap. Seeing that Taylor had stopped arguing, Arthur clapped his hands and stood up. "Alright, I’m heading back to the dorm." As he was about to leave, he suddenly seemed to remember something. He pulled out his phone and sent Taylor another 200,000 dollars. Waving his phone at Taylor, he said, "This is for you. And don’t even think about refusing. If you don’t take it, that means you don’t see me as a brother."
