Chapter 397 Blood for a Life

The moment they heard the doctor’s words, Cold Frost and Sage spoke in unison. “We can donate too!” The doctor glanced over the group. Hugo, with his graying hair and aging frame, wasn’t a suitable donor. Cold Frost and Sage, however, were young and healthy—good candidates. As for Arthur… The doctor frowned. The boy was already covered in injuries, his body wrapped in hastily applied bandages. God only knew how much blood he had already lost. If they took any more from him, he might not survive the process. But testing was necessary. Blood had to be a match. The doctor gave a sharp nod. “Come with me.” Without hesitation, they followed. The doctor immediately instructed Cold Frost and Sage to go first for compatibility testing. Arthur pressed his lips together and said nothing. He knew he had already lost a lot of blood. Even if they tested him, there was a chance he wouldn’t have enough left to donate safely. But when the results came back— Neither Cold Frost nor Sage were a match. Hugo immediately rolled up his sleeve. “Test mine!” Arthur didn’t wait either. “Test mine too!” Taylor was running out of time. There was no room for hesitation. The doctor quickly took their samples. Minutes stretched painfully long. Finally, the doctor reappeared—his expression shifting with relief. “Arthur’s blood is a match!” Arthur shot to his feet, unable to suppress his joy. “Thank God! Thank God!” Without waiting for another word, he strode toward the collection station, thrusting out his arm. “Nurse, take as much as you need! I’m fine—I can handle it.” Hugo and the others followed closely, their expressions tense. Hugo’s eyes flickered with worry. But now was not the time to object. Saving Taylor came first. The nurse worked swiftly, inserting the needle with practiced ease. “If you feel lightheaded, tell me immediately,” she instructed. Arthur nodded firmly. “I will.” Time crawled by. The blood drained steadily from his arm, flowing into the collection bags. The nurse checked him. “Any dizziness?” Arthur forced his heavy eyelids to stay open. He focused on keeping his gaze sharp and clear. “No,” he lied. “I’m fine. Keep going.” The nurse exchanged a glance with the doctor. They were both surprised. Given his injuries, Arthur should have already been feeling weak.Any normal person would be lightheaded by now. A few more moments passed before the nurse finally withdrew the needle. Arthur panicked. “Wait—don’t stop! Take more!” The nurse shook her head. “We’ve reached the safe limit. Any more, and you’ll collapse.” Arthur clenched his fists. “I don’t care! I’ll recover! Just take a little more!” The doctor and nurse exchanged startled glances. They had seen desperate parents offer up their blood for their children. They had seen husbands and wives plead for their partners. But Arthur and Taylor weren’t family. And yet, the sheer desperation in Arthur’s voice—the determination in his eyes— It was rare. The doctor clapped a hand on Arthur’s shoulder, a faint smile of admiration appearing on his face. “You’ve done more than enough. Now, rest.” The nurse handed him a large cup of glucose water. Arthur exhaled, his entire body sagging. His fingers trembled slightly as he took the cup. “…That’s good… That’s good…” he murmured. The relief that washed over him was so overwhelming that he didn’t even notice his body swaying— Until his vision darkened. And then—With a loud thud, he collapsed. “Arthur!!!” “Arthur!!!” Hugo, Cold Frost, and Sage lunged forward in alarm. The doctor barely had time to react before shouting out orders. “Get him to the emergency room—now!” Arthur was swiftly lifted onto a stretcher, rushed down the hallway toward another operating room. Taylor hadn’t even come out yet. And now, Arthur was being wheeled in. Hugo and the others could only pace outside, helpless. Fortunately, the hospital had enough staff. Arthur’s emergency care didn’t interfere with Taylor’s surgery. Time inched forward. It felt endless. Then, finally— The doors opened. Arthur was being wheeled out. Hugo, Cold Frost, and Sage rushed forward. “How is he?” Hugo demanded. The doctor wiped his brow, glancing down at Arthur with something close to admiration. “This kid…” he muttered. “The injuries on his body—there were too many to count. Two broken ribs, severe bruising, deep lacerations. And yet, he endured all of it without a word.” “Then, on top of that, he donated far more blood than he should have. His body simply gave out.”Silence. Hugo, Cold Frost, and Sage were stunned. They turned to look at Arthur. He had told them— “It’s just a few scratches.” “It’s nothing serious.” And all this time— He had been holding himself together through sheer willpower.
