Stronger Every Time I Die
Over the past few days, even though Raelynn had a phone and had learned about his status in Seacity, she didn’t dare look him up. She wanted to see him in person. Rosie and Susie, on the other hand, didn’t overthink things. Rosie was simply puzzled by the man’s generosity. In the past few days, he had taken meticulous care of them, providing phones, clothes, and various daily necessities. She could tell that he seemed interested in Julie, but given his status, he was likely a young lord from an influential family. A man like that would prioritize family alliances in marriage, wouldn’t he? But right now, we’re at our lowest, penniless, powerless, and constantly being thrown out by Arthur, who’s already disowned us in front of everyone. We have nothing to offer him. What is he after? Compared to Julie, Rosie remained relatively calm. Julie, however, was too caught up in the moment to see clearly. As the luxury car slowly drove into the Yarbrough residence, everyone inside felt a mix of anticipation and unease. The moment they entered through the grand gates, they were stunned by the sight before them. The imposing entrance, the lavish decoration, and the sprawling courtyard that seemed endless—everywhere they looked, they were reminded of just how wealthy this family was. The Yarbrough residence was entirely different from Arthur’s estate. While it wasn’t as large, its extravagance far surpassed Arthur’s. Back when the Gray family was one of the most prominent families in South City, she had thought their mansion was already grand enough. But now, standing before the Yarbrough estate, she realized the difference was like night and day. There was simply no comparison. Seeing all this, Julie’s sense of inferiority deepened. She clenched her hands nervously. As for Raelynn, her emotions were far more complicated. She hadn’t seen him in over twenty years, and yet, he had done so well for himself. If she had known things would turn out like this, she should have… Raelynn quickly stopped herself from entertaining such ridiculous thoughts. The car came to a stop, and Stephen was the first to step out. Ever the gentleman, he personally opened the door for them. Julie and Raelynn hesitated for a moment before getting out. “Ladies, my parents and grandmother are in the living room. Would you like to meet them?” Stephen asked with a polite smile. Julie and Raelynn nodded nervously before forcing out a response. “Alright, thank you for the trouble, Mr. Stephen.” Since they were already here, not greeting the hosts would be even more impolite. They were guests of the Yarbrough family, not their servants. That word "servant" suddenly jolted Julie. Looking at her situation now, she really did seem like one. She immediately hesitated. “Mr. Stephen, are we imposing too much?” she blurted out. Raelynn, Rosie, and Susie all looked at Julie in surprise. They had nowhere else to go, no money to their names. Someone was finally willing to take them in—even if it was a little humiliating, it was still better than sleeping on the streets. They were all women. That night, they had been attacked by robbers. What if, next time, they ran into someone with even worse intentions? What would they do then? They tugged at Julie’s sleeve, signaling her to stop talking. Stephen noticed their small gestures, a faint trace of disdain flashing through his eyes. His expression remained unchanged, still warm and composed. “Ms. Julie, there’s no need to worry. There are plenty of empty rooms in the Yarbrough residence. It would be a waste to leave them unused. Everyone faces hard times at some point—helping where I can is my privilege. You don’t have to think too much about it.” His words were casual, yet they reassured them. Stephen led them across the vast courtyard and into the grand, elegantly furnished living room. Inside, a familiar figure sat reading the newspaper. The moment Raelynn saw him, her heart skipped a beat. He was still as striking as ever. Now in middle age, he had gained a more refined and reserved aura. His short hair was neatly combed, and he wore a well-fitted suit with his tie slightly loosened at the front. Zane lifted his gaze and immediately saw Raelynn standing in the doorway, staring at him in a daze.A faint smile appeared on his lips. “Raelynn, it’s been a long time.” Raelynn? Stephen glanced between them in surprise. “Dad, you know Mrs. Gray?” Earlier, Zane had only told Stephen to bring Raelynn and the others back. Stephen hadn’t realized his father actually knew her. Zane nodded. “We were university classmates.” Hearing Stephen address her as "Mrs. Gray", Raelynn instinctively corrected him. “Mr. Stephen, I haven’t been Mrs. Gray for a long time. You can just call me Madam Raelynn Mercer.”
