Stronger Every Time I Die
Stephen noticed Julie staring blankly, lost in thought, so he gently called her name again. "Ms. Julie?" Julie jolted back to reality. Realizing she had been absentmindedly staring at him, her face flushed an even deeper shade of red. Julie pondered, How strange. We've known each other for less than two hours, yet I... feel this way? Is this what they call love at first sight? She extended both hands to accept the phone. "I really like it. Thank you, Mr. Stephen." She couldn't even recall the last time someone had treated her with such genuine thoughtfulness. Stephen had anticipated everything, not only had he prepared clothes and toiletries, but he had also realized they were without phones and had considerately provided them with brand-new ones. For a family of his stature, these items were insignificant in value, but the meticulous care behind the gesture was profoundly heartwarming. As the eldest daughter, Julie had been raised under the weight of responsibility. Since childhood, her parents had instilled in her the duty to care for her younger siblings, to embody the role of the dependable eldest. She had grown up adhering to their expectations. Strong and independent, she had entered the family business immediately after graduation, assisting her father in managing the company. She had always carried herself with the composure and tenacity of a formidable woman. No matter how severe the setbacks, she had long since grown accustomed to shouldering them alone. Her parents never permitted her to cry. They told her that she had to be strong, that she had to lead by example. Yet now, in her most vulnerable and disheveled state, a man as warm and refined as jade had appeared, offering her nothing but kindness and consideration. Julie's heart sank into him in an instant. She clutched the phone tightly to her chest. The device was cold, yet her heart burned with warmth. Watching her overwhelmed expression, a faint smile tugged at the corners of Stephen's lips. Such an easily moved girl. He spoke again. "You lost your identification as well, didn't you? Once we return to the Yarbrough Residence and you've settled in, I'll have the butler take you to get everything reissued." Stephen's meticulous foresight surprised not only Julie but also Raelynn. They were mere acquaintances who had crossed paths by chance, yet he had already considered every detail on their behalf. He truly was his father's son. But Rosie, watching Stephen intently, couldn't shake the unease in her heart. Would a stranger really go to such lengths for us? Do people like him even exist in this world? And how did we end up meeting him at our lowest point? Compared to Julie and Raelynn, Rosie remained far more composed. She glanced down at the phone in her hand, lost in thought. Before long, Susie was wheeled out. The anesthesia had yet to wear off. Her eyes remained shut, her complexion deathly pale. Seeing her in such a fragile state, Raelynn's heart clenched with unbearable sorrow. Her hatred for Arthur deepened further. If Susie woke up and learned that she might never be able to bear children, Raelynn couldn't begin to imagine how she would react. They returned to the hospital room, and after a while, Susie finally stirred. "Susie? Susie, you're awake!" Raelynn, Julie, and Rosie rushed forward, Raelynn calling out with deep concern. Susie's eyes fluttered open, revealing the anxious faces of Raelynn, Julie, and Rosie hovering over her. The last thing she had heard before losing consciousness echoed hauntingly in her mind. "The patient suffered external trauma, which led to a ruptured corpus luteum. Unfortunately, because she was brought in too late, the delay may result in complications affecting her fertility." Susie stared vacantly at the ceiling, her expression devoid of emotion, utterly unresponsive to Raelynn's frantic inquiries. Affect my fertility? I'm still so young, barely in my early twenties. My life is only just beginning, how could I already be stripped of the ability to have children? If I can't have kids, how am I supposed to marry into a prestigious family? How will I ever reach the life I've always dreamed of? How is this happening? How is this happening? She had come to Seacity with her mom and sister in search of happiness, to find the prince charming she had always envisioned. Yet before she could find anything, she had been humiliated, robbed, beaten so severely that her very future was now in jeopardy. Raelynn and the others looked at Susie, their hearts aching so profoundly it felt as if they were bleeding. In the Gray family, aside from Zac, Susie was the one they cherished the most. She was pure, lively, and naive. She was their precious gem, someone they had always sought to protect. Before, her eyes had always been filled with the light of hope. Even when their family business had fallen into decline, even when they struggled to make ends meet, she had never lost her belief in the future. But now, her gaze was hollow, her face ashen, and the hope that once shone so brightly had been extinguished. Julie grasped Susie's hand tightly. "Susie, don't think this way. The doctor only said it might affect your fertility, it's not a certainty. If we take care of you and help you recover, you'll be okay. We will get through this together!"
