Stronger Every Time I Die
Arthur often fantasized in secret—imagining himself lying in his mother’s arms, with his father and three sisters beside him, all smiling at him. But it was only a secret fantasy, one he never dared to say out loud. He used to secretly watch them interact with Zac, seeing how harmonious they were together. Even though he was always excluded, he still longed to go home, to sit at the same table with them. He would always imagine someone smiling at him, filling his bowl, and saying, "Arthur, have some more." Just like they did with Zac. Back then, he was like a rat in the gutter, secretly peeking at other people’s happiness, imagining that happiness belonged to him. Imagining those words of concern were meant for him. Imagining that the one nestled in his mother’s arms, acting spoiled, was him. He once thought he would never experience that warmth in this lifetime. But fate had been kind to him—he met Ashley, and he met Ashley’s wonderful family. Arthur cherished this connection deeply. It was the most precious thing in his life, something more valuable than anything else. Smiling softly, Arthur picked up a spoonful of Ashley’s favorite dish and placed it in her bowl. “You should eat more too.” Seeing him finally smile, the others subtly let out a breath of relief. Nancy beamed. “If you like it, your father and I will make it for you all the time.” The way Arthur addressed them had completely warmed their hearts. Arthur nodded obediently. “Okay.” “By the way, has Ivan made it home?” Spencer asked. He was still surprised that the renowned Ivan was not only friends with Arthur but that they were actually quite close. Arthur nodded. “He just told me he got home.” Ivan was extremely introverted. He didn’t like being around too many people, which was why he had lived in seclusion for so long. Arthur respected that and didn’t insist on him staying. That night, he let him return home. At a hotel in Seacity, several days had passed. Raelynn and the others were still staying there. Over the past few days, they had tried multiple times to see Arthur, but every time they went to his estate, the butler turned them away without hesitation. They didn’t even get a glimpse of him. In fact, because of their repeated visits, the estate had increased its security, stationing guards at the entrance to prevent them from barging in. Arthur had learned his lesson after they forced their way into his engagement banquet. Now, they had completely run out of money. Having just been turned away from the estate again, they sat in their hotel room, looking utterly defeated. After a long silence, Julie finally spoke. “Mom, don’t worry. I already put my house in South City up for sale. The buyers have seen it, and if nothing goes wrong, the money should be in our account within a day or two.” Rosie added, “I put mine up for sale too. If all goes well, we should get the money in the next couple of days.” Raelynn nodded. Her once well-maintained face had long lost its glow. “There’s no way we can go back to South City. The houses had to be sold sooner or later.” Susie frowned. “If we don’t get the money soon, we won’t have anywhere to stay tonight. The hotel manager has already come to collect payment several times.” As she finished speaking, a sudden knock sounded at the door. The moment they heard it, their hearts clenched in fear. They had already missed a day’s payment. Every time there was a knock, they felt a deep sense of dread. Even though they had tried to cut costs on food and other expenses, their last bit of money had already been spent. They had been looking for a rental in Seacity, but without money, what could they possibly rent? Susie, who was sitting closest to the door, hesitated. She was too afraid to open it—she had already been scolded by the hotel manager multiple times. Raelynn shrank back as well, unwilling to go. Julie took the initiative. “I’ll get it.” Seeing Julie stand up, Raelynn let out a breath of relief. When she opened the door, Julie was immediately startled by the large group of people standing outside. The hotel manager stood at the front. He turned to the security guards behind him and commanded, “Throw them out!” “Yes, sir!” In an instant, the guards rushed into the room.“What do you think you’re doing?” Raelynn and her daughters shot up in panic. “You dare treat us this way? Do you even know who we are?” Susie shrieked hysterically. “How can you treat guests like this? Do you even care about your business?” Even the usually composed Rosie was starting to crack. The hotel manager’s expression was cold as he scoffed. "Hah! Who are you? Aren’t you just the heartless Raelynn, Mr. Gray's biological mother who abused him since childhood? And his three wretched sisters? You’re exactly the kind of people I want to kick out!"
