Stronger Every Time I Die

Chapter 268 A Surprise Family Reunion

Arthur understood their intentions but didn’t care to dwell on them. Between people, how much sincerity could there really be? It was all about mutual benefits, nothing more. The only difference between these people and the ones who had openly condemned him earlier was that they had better foresight, more patience, and weren’t so easily swayed by the crowd. They had sharper minds. It wasn’t because they held any special regard for him—Arthur saw that clearly. But he had no intention of drinking any more alcohol. The last time he did, the experience had left a lasting shadow. Arthur replaced every drink with juice instead. The guests largely understood why. Many of them had seen the news and chose not to probe further. Aside from the unpleasant episode with Zane and his family, the banquet was a success. Just as it was about to wrap up, however, unexpected guests arrived at the estate. At the entrance, familiar voices suddenly rang out. "Arthur!" The moment he heard that voice, Arthur’s expression darkened visibly. The Gibson family turned toward the source of the voice. Standing at the entrance was a middle-aged woman, accompanied by three young women. The woman appeared to be around fifty. Her face bore the signs of careful maintenance, but the deep hollows around her eyes betrayed her exhaustion. She wore designer clothes, yet Nancy immediately recognized that they were outdated—several years old, at least. As for the three young women, they too were dressed in high-end brands, but the styles were clearly from past seasons. Their faces looked weary, drained. Judging by their resemblance, they were undoubtedly the middle-aged woman’s daughters. And yet, the most striking thing about all four of them was that they each bore a distinct resemblance to Arthur. The Gibson family instinctively turned to Arthur. Before the engagement, Spencer and Nancy had carefully asked Arthur whether they should formally visit his parents. Even though Arthur had severed ties with them, blood was still blood. Out of respect for tradition and propriety, they felt they ought to at least extend the courtesy of a formal visit. However, they were well aware of Arthur’s history with the Gray family, so they left the decision entirely up to him. When they had broached the subject, Arthur’s response had been swift and decisive—no need! He had nothing to do with the Gray family anymore! With Arthur’s firm answer, Spencer and Nancy had dropped the matter. But now, faced with the sudden appearance of these people, the Gibson family found themselves in an awkward position, unsure of how to react to the Gray family. Arthur coldly addressed the security guards blocking their way. "Let them in." He had never informed them about his engagement. He had no idea how they had even found out about it, let alone managed to track him down here. Arthur had no desire to see them, but he also knew he couldn’t avoid them forever. It was better to settle things once and for all, making it clear that they had no place in his life. As soon as Arthur allowed them inside, Raelynn and her younger sisters, Julie and Susie, rushed forward. Arthur letting them in meant he still cared about them! He must have forgiven them! The moment they stood before him, Raelynn took in Arthur’s striking figure, clad in a custom-tailored suit, exuding confidence and authority. A wave of mixed emotions crashed over her. My son… He’s grown up so quickly. He’s already a man who can stand on his own. Before seeing him, she had rehearsed countless words in her mind. She had planned to properly apologize to him. But now, standing face-to-face with him, she found herself at a loss for words. Susie, meanwhile, took a sweeping glance at the grand estate—the sheer scale of it—and the sea of guests dressed in elegant attire. She couldn’t help but mutter, "Such a big celebration, and you didn’t invite us?" Arthur’s expression turned even colder. Raelynn snapped out of her daze. She, too, took in the grandeur of the event, the lavish decorations, the distinguished guests. She failed to notice the chilling shift in Arthur’s expression. More than that, she didn’t want to make a spectacle of herself in front of so many people. She playfully chided, "Arthur, how could you not tell us about such an important occasion? Your engagement is such a big event—you should have let us know!" The moment those words left her mouth, the guests who had unconsciously quieted down to watch their interaction exchanged subtle glances, their expressions turning… complicated. Most of them knew what Arthur had endured in the Gray family. They also knew what these women had done to him over the years. Even without introductions, they could already tell—the middle-aged woman had to be Arthur’s biological mother, Raelynn! And those three young women had to be his sisters. When they had read about the Gray family in the news, many of them had found it hard to believe. What kind of people treat their own biological son this way? Ignoring him, neglecting him, while doting on an adopted child instead? That’s something no normal family would ever do. And now, seeing them in the flesh, they couldn’t help but stare a little longer.
