Stronger Every Time I Die

Chapter 243 A Forced Apology

Dravenis, clearly reluctant, went back to deliver the message. When Zane and his two sons stepped inside, Spencer wasted no time. "Well, well, I heard you were chasing a stray dog the other day and got bitten instead. You don’t have rabies, do you?" As he spoke, he even took a step back and spread his arms protectively in front of Arthur, Nancy, and Ashley. Everyone was speechless. Wasn’t that a little too rude? But then again… when dealing with the Yarbrough family, did politeness even matter? The three Yarbrough men almost lost their composure on the spot. Maris instinctively opened his mouth to curse, but Zane yanked him back just in time. Zane’s face flushed red with barely contained rage. His chest heaved as he struggled to keep himself from exploding right then and there. Arthur couldn’t help but wonder—was Zane bottling up so much anger that he was going to mess himself up? Not that it was his problem. Honestly, he’d love nothing more than for Zane to overthink himself straight into a breakdown. It took a long moment before Zane finally managed to calm down. Say what you will about him, but there was a reason he had climbed to his current position. Without another word, Zane pulled out his phone, found the proof of his rabies vaccination from a few days ago, and handed it to Spencer. He grinned. "Spencer, no need to worry. See? I got my shots right away. I’m all good." Everyone was at a loss for words. Even Spencer, who usually had a sharp tongue, couldn’t help but admire the sheer audacity. Zane could flip his attitude faster than anyone. Not too long ago, when he thought Arthur had cheated on Ashley and that the Gibson family had cut ties with him, he had spoken to Spencer without an ounce of respect. Now, in just a matter of days, he was standing here acting all familiar, calling him "Spencer" like they were old friends. Zane might be a real piece of work, but his shamelessness was on another level. Seeing that Spencer had stopped mocking him, Zane secretly sighed in relief. Without wasting another moment, he pulled Maris forward and placed him in front of Arthur. With a polite smile, Zane began his carefully rehearsed speech. "Well, Arthur… Maris has been spoiled since he was young. The kid thinks he can do whatever he wants. Last time you were in Seacity, he gave you a hell of a headache. We’ve been doing some serious reflection as a family. We realize now that we failed in raising him properly." Zane put on the most remorseful face he could muster. If Arthur didn’t already know what kind of person he was, he might have actually believed it. Zane nudged Maris, signaling him to apologize. Maris, on the other hand, was already on the verge of exploding. He still didn’t believe Arthur was really Cloudia Corporation’s chairman, and after Spencer’s blatant insult earlier, he was fuming. If not for Zane’s threatening glare, he would have already lashed out. But apologize to Arthur? Never! Maris clenched his jaw so hard it hurt. His furious eyes locked onto Arthur. This was all his fault. Arthur was nothing but a fraud, and yet because of him, his father—a man of status—was being humiliated like this in front of Spencer. No one knew their own child better than a father. One look at Maris’s expression, and Zane instantly knew what was going through his head. His anger flared. He had already swallowed his pride and came here to take this hit, but this ungrateful brat was about to ruin it all! "Maris!" Zane snapped. His sharp glare sent a clear message—Maris had better not mess this up. Stephen, seeing that things were about to spiral out of control, quickly stepped in. "Father, please don’t be angry." Turning to Arthur, he said calmly, "Maris is still young. He’s been arrogant his whole life, but if it’s alright, let me apologize on his behalf." Before anyone could respond, Stephen turned toward Arthur and gave a deep bow. "Mr. Gray, we were blind before. We deeply regret offending you. I hope you can be generous enough to forgive us." Maris’s face twisted with fury. "Stephen!" Before he could do anything, Zane grabbed his arm and held him in place. Forcing a smile, Zane said, "Arthur, Stephen is my eldest son. His apology on behalf of his brother is a sincere one. I hope you can accept it." The whole scene was utterly ridiculous. Arthur and the Gibsons watched in amusement as the Yarbroughs struggled. All this drama… just to apologize? It was as if Arthur was sentencing them to death. Spencer and Nancy stayed quiet, simply waiting for Arthur’s response.
