Stronger Every Time I Die
Stanley responded firmly, "Yes, sir!" Hearing this, something stirred in Ashley’s heart. Arthur had asked Stanley to check the surveillance footage right in front of her. Could it be…? Ashley suddenly asked, "At the hotel earlier… did nothing really happen between you and Tia?" Even though Arthur had already told her multiple times, she still wanted to hear him confirm it once more. Arthur looked straight into her eyes, his gaze serious and unwavering. Suddenly, he raised his hand and solemnly swore, "I swear, in my entire life, aside from Ashley, I have never touched another woman! Nothing happened between me and Tia at the hotel! It was all a septum Tia deliberately framed me! If I’m lying, may divine retribution strike me down, may I never…" Before he could finish, Ashley hurriedly covered his mouth. "Don’t!" Even if something had happened between him and Tia, she didn’t want him to make such a cruel oath. But seeing the sincerity and determination in his eyes, her heart wavered. Ashley sighed. "Let’s wait for the surveillance footage to confirm everything." Deep down, she wanted to believe him. She knew Arthur was someone who took responsibility for his actions. If he had truly done something, he wouldn’t try to hide it. But the fact remained—they had been alone in that hotel room, and Arthur had been drunk. The messy sheets, Tia’s disheveled appearance—Ashley needed solid proof to ease her doubts. The next morning, Arthur woke up on the couch. Last night, Ashley had refused to share the bed with him. The moment he opened his eyes, his first instinct was to grab his phone and call Stanley. When the call connected, Stanley’s voice was laced with frustration. "Mr. Gray, all the surveillance footage along that entire route has been destroyed in advance! The cameras at the school entrance, the hotel entrance, and even outside the hotel room—everything was wiped clean. We can’t find a single trace!" Arthur sat there, gripping his phone in stunned silence. His throat felt dry and parched, unable to utter a word. He wasn’t afraid of being framed by Tia. She was insignificant—no matter what happened, she had no power over him. What terrified him was Ashley’s misunderstanding. Just as his frustration reached its peak, a cup of water appeared in front of him. Arthur looked up in surprise. "Ashley?" Ashley gazed at him, her heart aching at the dark circles under his eyes and the red veins that streaked them. She gently pushed the glass closer to him. "Drink some water." Arthur stared at her, then slowly took the cup. The moment his hands wrapped around it, warmth spread through his fingers. The water was just the right temperature—warm, not too hot. Ashley quietly sat beside him and, without hesitation, reached up to smooth his messy hair. "Arthur, I thought about it all night." Arthur tensed at her words, his hands unconsciously tightening around the cup. Then, Ashley suddenly smiled. "I’ve decided—I should believe you. You wouldn’t lie to me, would you?" Her smile was soft and warm. Her large, bright eyes locked onto his, filled with trust. Arthur was momentarily stunned. Those eyes… they were so gentle, so pure. They shimmered with a light that made him feel at peace. Her smile—so light, yet so breathtaking. To Arthur, it was the most beautiful sight in the world. In that instant, all the frustration and anxiety that had plagued him vanished like smoke in the wind. Suddenly, Arthur pulled Ashley into a tight embrace. Without even realizing it, tears welled up in his eyes. He buried his face in the crook of her neck, his voice trembling. "Ashley…" Ashley wrapped her arms around him just as tightly. At that moment, the unease and doubt that had clouded their hearts dissipated completely. They held onto each other, as if silently promising never to let go.It was only now that Arthur realized just how deeply he feared losing her. Ashley, too, had dark circles under her eyes. It was clear that she hadn’t slept all night either. She had spent the entire night thinking things through. And in the end, she chose to trust Arthur—unconditionally. She shouldn’t have doubted him. Even if all the evidence pointed to his betrayal, Ashley still wanted to believe him. She believed in him, and she believed in herself. If Arthur said nothing had happened with Tia, then it hadn’t happened. Period. In that embrace, time seemed to freeze. In each other’s eyes, in each other’s hearts, there was only them—nothing else mattered. A long time passed before they slowly pulled apart. Recalling Stanley’s words, Arthur’s expression darkened. "I just called Stanley. He said all the surveillance footage along the route had been destroyed. There’s nothing left to investigate." Saying those words took all the courage he had.
