Stronger Every Time I Die

Chapter 15 Shameful Things

The box exuded boundless luxury, and it was obvious that the item inside was valuable. The term ‘birthday gift' felt so foreign to Arthur. In the past, gifts had only appeared in his dreams. Now that he had a real gift, Arthur could only feel insulted. Seeing that Arthur didn't accept the gift, Raelynn shoved the box into his arms and asked, "Arthur, do you have any money to spend?" She then pulled out a stack of dollar bills from her wallet and handed it to Arthur. She remembered that in the past, Arthur used to plead with her for pocket money, but every time she considered giving him some, Zac would get upset. Zac had been hospitalized countless times over the years, so Raelynn had become very wary of his health. Every time Arthur upset Zac, she couldn't help but scold Arthur. Thinking about it, it seemed to Arthur like it had been a long time since he had asked her for money. The smile on his face disappeared completely when he saw his parents, and he lost his appetite for the cake. He stared at the stack of dollar bills and the box in his arms. The bills were gorgeous. They were something he had once longed for deeply. What he had longed for even more, however, was his parents' love, but he didn't need it anymore. Arthur pushed the gift back into Raelynn's arms and said coldly, "No thanks. You can save it for Zac. If there's nothing else, I'll be leaving." He abandoned the cake and turned to leave. "Wait!" Raelynn quickly called after him. "You don't have any money. How'll you manage?" Arthur let out a mocking laugh. "Heh. After all these years, my mom just realized I don't have money?" Raelynn was left speechless. After a moment of silence, she asked, "How are your injuries? And if we didn't give you money, where did you get the money to stay in the dorms?" The boarding fees weren't much to Arthur's family, but if they hadn't given him money, it wasn't a trivial amount for him to raise alone. Arthur replied coldly, "I've been beaten up for eight years and haven't died yet. I'm not about to die so easily now." He turned to leave, not wanting to deal with his parents any longer. John, who had planned to talk it over with Arthur, was instantly enraged by his son's attitude! "Ungrateful child! Is this how you speak to your mother? We're concerned about you, and this is how you treat us in return?"Raelynn looked at Arthur with a hurt but resentful expression, as if blaming him for rejecting her good intentions. Arthur smirked. Heh. As expected, a leopard can't change its spots. They couldn't hold back their temper for long. Before Arthur could say anything, Ashley, who was standing nearby, couldn't take it anymore. She frowned and said, "As parents, isn't it your responsibility to care for your child? It's his birthday today, and he was bullied. Instead of comforting him, you're scolding him!" John looked at Ashley in dismay and said, "This is between him and us. Who gave you the right to jump in?" Then, he turned to Arthur and said gruffly, "All these years, we haven't given him any pocket money. Where did his money come from then? He must've done something shameful!" Arthur sneered at his parents in response. Ashley exclaimed in disbelief, "Shameful? Oh goodness! Are you even his biological parents? How can parents talk to their own child like this?" Raelynn was also startled by John's words and quickly tugged at his sleeve, signaling him to watch his mouth. John realized his mistake as well. What he had said might be fine at home, but now there was a stranger present. If word of this got out, it would harm his family's reputation. Arthur took a step forward, gently pulled Ashley aside, and said tactlessly, "Shameful? Heh, you can say I've done plenty of shameful things." Everyone turned to look at him in shock. He went on, "All these years, you've given Zac hundreds every month, but not even a single penny to me. Do you know how I've survived?" Arthur showed his hands to his parents. They were rough and covered with calluses. "I got my money by secretly working part-time jobs every day after school! Washing dishes, serving food, pouring drinks, running errands, delivering goods. You name it, I've done it! For so many years, I couldn't even afford new clothes. Look at the clothes I'm wearing now. They're the ones you bought for Zac two years ago, but they were too big for him, so you gave them to me!" Arthur calmed down slightly and finished, "Shameful? Yeah, it's pretty shameful when the son of the Gray family has to work part-time everywhere during his childhood to earn a living. If everyone knows, it'd be the biggest joke ever!" John and Raelynn stared in disbelief at Arthur's hands. They were used to seeing Zac's fair and delicate games. In fact, Raelynn often praised how beautiful his hands were.
