Stronger Every Time I Die
Raelynn murmured in disbelief, "How is this possible? If we didn't buy him a birthday cake in the past, can't he buy one for himself?" John said furiously at his wife, "Why did you say this out loud? Are you implying we've been abusing him? Has he ever lacked pocket money all these years?" Raelynn sighed. "This child is really too irresponsible. He doesn't even know how to spend our money wisely." She then asked John, "How much do you give him every month? I want to ask him why he can't even buy himself a cake!" John was slightly taken aback by the question. "Why me? Why would I give an irresponsible child money?" He added, "Even if I didn't give him any money, the money you gave him should've been enough, right?" Raelynn froze. "Me? I didn't give him anything either. He was always making Zac end up in the hospital and…" Before she could finish, the couple suddenly exchanged glances and asked in unison, "You've never given him any money?" They couldn't believe each other. They gave Zac hundreds of dollars in pocket money every month, and his sisters would occasionally give him some extra as well. He never had to worry about money. During holidays or birthdays, they would give him even more. On the other hand, it now seemed like they had never given Arthur any money. Raelynn remembered that ever since they adopted Zac, Arthur had always been at odds with him. She had cut off his pocket money as punishment, and it had never occurred to her that John hadn't given him pocket money either. After all, as one of the wealthiest families in South City, how could a child in their family not have pocket money? Raelynn suddenly thought of something, and she hurriedly took out her phone to call Julie. As she dialed, she muttered, "I'll ask Julie. She or her sisters must've given Arthur some money, right?" John quickly agreed, "Yes. The three of them are home. Ask them." He couldn't imagine if none of his daughters had given Arthur pocket money, how did he grow up? At school, there were always free meals in the cafeteria, but during the school holidays, he had to come home to eat. Sometimes, when they went out with the maids, only Arthur was left at home. What did he eat then? Besides food, he also needed to buy his school supplies, such as textbooks. Where did he get the money for these? In the past, they gave Zac three hundred a month, and it still wasn't enough. Being part of South City's elites, it was normal for him to spend a lot on social events. Julie accepted the call, and before she could speak, Raelynn immediately asked, "Julie, have you given Arthur any money all these years?" On the other end of the call, Julie rolled her eyes and replied disdainfully, "Why would I give him money? If he were half as sensible as Zac, I might consider giving him some." After receiving Julie's definitive answer, her parents exchanged glances. Raelynn added, "Are Rosie and Susie there? Turn on the speaker." Julie said as she turned on the speakerphone, "They're here. We just came out of Zac's room. He's been worried about Arthur and just fell asleep." Unable to wait any longer, John grabbed the phone and asked, "Rosie, Susie, have you ever given Arthur pocket money?" Rosie and Susie were baffled by the question. Rosie replied impatiently, "Someone like him? Why would I give him money?" Susie simply rolled her eyes and said, "I'd rather throw money away than give it to him!" If not for their biological relations, Susie wouldn't even want to acknowledge that Arthur was her brother! John and Raelynn fell silent at their daughters' responses. After hanging up, Raelynn hesitated for a moment before saying, "Let's talk to Arthur." John agreed reluctantly, "Alright." For so many years, John had always treated Arthur harshly. Now, suddenly needing to speak kindly to Arthur felt strange to John. Meanwhile, Arthur was happily eating cake with Ashley. This was the first birthday in many years that Arthur truly enjoyed. Plus, he had Ashley, the prettiest girl in school, accompanying him. John's car was parked behind them, and after some hesitation, Raelynn called out from within the car, "Arthur." Hearing this familiar voice, Arthur froze. He wanted to pretend he heard nothing, but they were already approaching him. Arthur's good mood vanished instantly. Raelynn forced a smile, handed the beautiful box she was holding to Arthur, and said, "Arthur, happy birthday. Here's our birthday gift."Arthur looked at the gift box in front of him.
