My Best Friend’s Brother Was Never Supposed to Taste Me
♡ Mia's pov ♡ "You know, sometimes I think you're some kind of alien," Austin suddenly says, jumping on the couch. I raise a brow, walking around the couch to plant my hands on my hips in front of him. "Feet off the couch Austin. And what do you mean, you think I am an alien?" I raised a brow when he groans, reluctant to remove his feet off the couch. "I mean, have you seen yourself in the mirror lately? An alien I tell you. You can no doubt pass for one!" He laughed when I glared at him. I knew it wouldn't have served me to take him seriously. "And what do you think you can pass for? A toad! An ugly toad!" I snapped, annoyed by his amusement. "Now kids. It'll be only you two for a while. Play nice." Dad said as he enters the living room. Kade had left a good hour ago or more, supposedly on his hunt for a job. It's not like I didn't want him to get a job, it was just that I feared he'd not need us. He would leave us soon. And although I should've expected it, I wasn't ready for that. My jaw ticked as I plop down on the couch next to Austin, intentionally bumping my shoulder against his. "Hey watch it alien," He snorts, his smaller hand pushing my shoulder away. "You watch it you toad!" I argued, poking my tongue out at him. "Kids," Dad warned behind us. Both Austin and I turn to face him simultaneously both of us with guilty expressions. " He started it." I pointed at Austin. "She started it!" Austin retaliated while jabbing a finger on my arm. " You both started it. Now quit harassing each other. I don't want your mom and I to receive a phone call from 911 saying that one of you killed the other for something dumb and meaningless. " Dad grumbles, slapping the back of both our heads. "Ouch." I pout rubbing the back of my head. "Mia did start it," Austin whined, pouting like someone took his favorite toy from his grasp. "I don't care who started it but you two better stop this nonsense," Dad warned, mumbling something about troublesome kids before mom makes her entrance. I could very well hear the sharp intake of breath from Dad as his gaze fixed on his wife. I couldn't blame him, mom looked ravishing in a pretty red dress with her hair dropped in loose curls. I smiled. I loved the way he stared at her. Like she was the center of his world. I wanted someone to look at me like that, that someone being Kade. But with the way he acted this morning, I wasn't so sure where we stood. "Bella," He whispered, drinking in the sight of her. Mom flushed, shyly looking at him. It was like they hadn't been married for years and had two children. Their relationship could only be described as the fresh bloom of infatuation. Like newlyweds precisely. "Sorry I took so long." She apologized, her eyes not once leaving his. It was like they were in their own world. "It's fine baby. You could've taken a century and I'd still be standing there, waiting for you." Dad breathed out, his eyes trained on mom's legs. Austin and I looked at each other and made disgusted faces, before smiling. "As much as I would love to see my parents staring at each other for hours, don't you two have to be somewhere?" I asked, my brow lifting to stare at my lovesick parents. They were supposed to meet up with one of Dad's friends and his wife to talk about a new investment opportunity. They weren't sure how long they'd be out. Mom is the first to break eye contact, her gaze drawing to Austin and I. "Promise me you two will be on your best behavior?" She practically begged, her gaze switching from Austin and I. I put on my best innocent convincing smile and nod. "Don't worry mom we'll be okay." She doesn't look convinced and sighs. "Hopefully Kade will get back soon to keep an eye on the both of you." I narrowed my eyes. " I am very capable of looking after both Austin and I mom." "With the way you two act, I'm surprised the house hasn't burned down yet. Kade's a sweet kid and is finally opening up. Having him here with just you two would be a great way to bond." Mom smiles fondly. It was clear Kade was on her list of favorite people. If only she knew how much bonding Kade and I had already done. I turn away from her completely as I felt the heat crawl up my cheeks and settle there. "I don't think there's any more bonding left to do," I admitted, reaching for the remote.I loved Saturdays. My relax day. "I have noticed Kade and Austin bonding but not you Mia. In fact, you two seemed to be avoiding each other for the last few days." She utters, her words having me stiffen. I didn't want to talk about Kade right now, especially with her. It only made me feel guilty that we had done more than we should've behind their backs. "We uh have been busy with school work mom, we don't really have time for much bonding," I said, putting on the television and refraining from staring back at her, afraid she'd see the lies on my face. "I- She started but dad cuts her off. "Baby we need to head out now if we want to be there early." Mom agrees and we all say our goodbyes before they leave. I didn't know I had been holding my breath until the air whooshed out of my lungs. "So baby shark?" I asked Austin, more like teasing him as I swipe through the movies on Netflix. "I'm not a baby Mia." He snaps. I laugh. "SpongeBob it is then." For a couple of hours, Austin and I had not once shifted from the couch except to pee. It was already five minutes past the hour three and mom and dad haven't come back yet. Neither has Kade. "We need popcorn," Austin grumbles, his head hanging from the couch and his feet up on the back of the chair. "You go do it," I murmured, my gaze not wanting to move off Megamind. That was probably the third animated movie we watched for today. "Mia?" Austin said softly. I reluctantly remove my eyes off the movie and set them on Austin. "Yeah?" His eyes glare at me from his position. " I can't make popcorn you dipshit." I rolled my eyes. And mom thinks Austin's a saint. Sighing heavily, I reluctantly move off the couch and made my way to the kitchen. After a few minutes of waiting for the popcorn to finish, I opened the microwave and reached out for the packet. It's hot so I pinch the ends with my fingers and tossed it on the counter beside the bowl. The clicking sound of a door being shut reaches my ears and I stop. I wait to hear if it were my parents but I hear nothing but the sound of heavy boots hitting the floor. Seconds later Austin yells." Hey Kade you're back! Mia and I were just about to watch a horror movie, want to join?" My heart leaps when I hear his name, my skin burning as I heard his voice " Is that right little man? Aren't you a bit too young to watch horror movies?" "I'm a big boy Kade." Austin boasted. I pictured him puffing out his little chest to somehow look a little more intimidating. " I don't want to impose on you and Mia- "Mia won't care. In fact, she would probably need you there as a bodyguard because she hates scary movies and can be a big crybaby- I gritted my teeth. Great. Austin was about to embarrass me. I march my way over to the living room, stopping dead in my tracks when Kade lifts his head and his blue eyes penetrate me. I nearly choke on my own saliva. "Where's the popcorn Mia?" Austin grumbles in displeasure, his eyes glaring at my empty hands. Austin manages to pull me away from Kade and I remember why I marched over there in the first place. "I don't hate horror movies Austin, stop lying!" I lied. "And besides we can't watch one because you'd not be able to sleep tonight." "I too can watch a scary movie Mia. You're the one who screamed the last time- "No I did not!" I snapped. "You did too!" Austin retorted. How far was the closest ocean? I'm really tempted to dump his body there and drive away. " You're scared of horror movies?" There's amusement swirling in Kade's tone and I couldn't resist when my eyes draw to his. I held my breath when the corner of his mouth lifts into an amusing grin. I blushed, tearing my eyes away from him as butterflies create havoc in my belly. "No I'm not." I lied, glaring at Austin who rolls his eyes. "Prove it then. Let's watch The Conjuring. I've been dying to see that movie!" Austin yelled in excitement. He was right about me hating horror movies, but I didn't lie when I said he wouldn't be able to sleep tonight. Austin also hated scary movies. The toad just wanted me to look like an idiot in front of Kade and him to look tough. So without thinking much about it, I answered. "Fine let's watch the conjuring. Let's see who will get scared." Austin grins, turning to face Kade in triumph. "Come on Kade. It will be hilarious when she starts screaming the house down." I press my lips together, my eyes drawing back to his. Kade has a tiny smile on his face. "I wouldn't want to miss it." My heart races. Even though Austin would be there, Kade and I so close and in the same room always brings tension. Tension that we clearly were never able to resist. Austin turns to me. "Go get the popcorn Mia!" I wasn't so sure I'd be able to focus on the movie if Kade was there. And maybe that wouldn't be such a bad thing.
