The Replacement He Never Wanted

Chapter 514 It Never Hurts to Plan Ahead

"I'm technically still a married woman. Have you ever seen a married woman go out to meet other men? That would be immoral," Addison said quietly. Even if her marriage to Lance was nothing but an empty shell, they were still technically husband and wife. She couldn't justify crossing that line. And right now, there was no way she would agree to meet any man. Unless Harvey came back to life. Unless the man Matthew found for her was Harvey. But that was impossible. However, when her refusal reached Matthew's ears, it took on a different meaning entirely. To him, what she really meant was that she loved Lance too much to leave him. He knew she would turn him down. But it didn't matter. He wasn't asking for her opinion—he was simply informing her. No marriage was free of conflict. With someone like Lance, who lacked even the bare minimum of thoughtfulness, arguments were bound to happen. And when that time came, maybe Addison would change her mind and finally divorce Lance. By then, the man he had picked for her would come in handy. It never hurt to plan ahead. ... As Addison watched Matthew leave, she let out a long breath and slipped into the car. She took out her phone to check the time, then reached into the glove compartment and pulled out a sealed envelope. Inside was the freshly signed divorce agreement. She had arranged to meet Lance for lunch at noon—both to have him sign the papers and to mark their official separation. With Matthew sitting in the passenger seat earlier, she hadn't dared to take it out. At one point, when he nearly reached for the glove compartment, she had been scared out of her wits.Thinking on her feet, she quickly struck up a conversation to divert his attention, narrowly avoiding disaster. She placed the envelope on the passenger seat. She had previously given Lance a set of divorce papers, but he still hadn't returned them. Addison couldn't be bothered to ask him for them again, so she simply drafted a new set and brought them along. This time, she had learned her lesson—she wouldn't let Lance take them home. She would make sure he signed them in front of her and keep them in her hands to ensure everything was final. After securing the envelope, she tapped open her chat with Ryan, pulled up the navigation, and got ready to drive to the restaurant. Ryan had chosen the place for lunch today. After making last-minute arrangements for Matthew last night, an unexpected international meeting came up, leaving her with no choice but to handle it first. Since she couldn't spare the time, she told Ryan about her lunch plans with Lance and asked him to book a restaurant for her. Following the GPS directions, she assumed the restaurant would be in the city center, but the farther she drove, the more remote the surroundings became—it was completely off course from downtown. The route seemed to lead toward the coast. When she finally arrived and stepped out of the car, Addison was taken aback by the scene before her. The restaurant sat on the edge of a cliff, with window-side seats overlooking the crashing waves of the open sea. She had been in Halton for quite some time, yet she had never once set foot in this place. Taking a small step forward, she felt the fierce sea breeze whip against her face. The cliff below looked daunting, triggering an instinctive urge to step back. The people coming out of the restaurant were mostly men dressed in casual sportswear, with only a handful of couples scattered among them.
