The Replacement He Never Wanted
"You go ahead. I'll follow behind to make sure you're safe. "There's a step here; take it slow." Mike was being meticulously attentive. Matthew walked ahead silently, unable to find any fault with Mike. Marilyn had just received the news from Lana and hurriedly went upstairs to change into a presentable dress. As Matthew settled down, she gracefully descended the stairs. "Hello, Divine Healer!" Marilyn greeted warmly, her excitement evident, but she maintained her composure as the hostess of the Johnstons. Matthew nodded slightly in response. She led the way, guiding Matthew to a side hall on the first floor. Mike initially felt normal, but as they walked further, he sensed something was off. He wondered where they were heading as it seemed to be getting more secluded. He was puzzled why Marilyn would treat the Divine Healer this way. However, his doubts faded as they walked further. Opening the door revealed an astonishing scene. The Johnston Residence was built against a mountain, and opening the side hall door offered a full view of the mountain. The winding, endless green forest, densely packed pines like giant umbrellas, layers of branches letting in speckled sunlight. The sound of water flowing over rocks added to the tranquility of the forest. "Divine Healer, please come in." After Matthew sat down, Marilyn signaled Lana, who promptly brought a cup of tea to Matthew. "Divine Healer, welcome to our home. You must be tired from the journey; have some tea to refresh yourself." Matthew looked up at the sound of her voice and glanced at Marilyn, but didn't speak. Out of courtesy, he looked at the tea Marilyn handed him. Initially, he didn't plan to drink it, but the pure color of the tea surprised him. "Divine Healer, please try it. It's the best tea we have." Marilyn smiled.Few people could brew tea so purely. Matthew, curious, took a sip. He was astonished by the taste. "This is good tea." The tension among everyone eased immediately, even Mike breathed a sigh of relief. "Drink as much as you like." Marilyn smiled, pouring more green tea for Matthew. Matthew sat upright, drinking tea and admiring the picturesque view outside. The clear lake had a few floating water lilies, with a strip of purple lilies on the edge. Some water birds swam leisurely, creating paths through the lilies. Marilyn discreetly observed Matthew's expression, seeing no sign of displeasure. "Enjoy your tea. I'll bring some desserts." She walked out, and as she passed Mike, she suddenly grabbed and pulled him out. Mike was startled and instinctively opened his mouth but closed it quickly after seeing Marilyn's expression. Once in the living room, Marilyn bombarded him with questions."Where's Lance? Didn't you say he was picking up the Divine Healer? Why are you here? And where's Addison?"
