The Replacement He Never Wanted
Matthew shook his palm fan and held the phone sternly, looking as though he were about to interrogate a criminal on the spot. "Grandpa?" Addison asked uncertainly when the other end of the line suddenly went silent. Hearing Addison's voice, Steven quickly adjusted his expression. Luckily, it was a phone call and not a video chat. If Addison had seen his current expression, she would've sided with Lance again. "Ah, it's nothing. I didn't bring anyone along because it's inconvenient. I came by myself," Matthew casually made up an excuse. Seeing Matthew dodge the question, Addison didn't press further. As the head of the family, Matthew always had his own plans. "In that case, I'll perform a basic checkup for Mr. Steven today. That way, we can skip the preliminary steps when you arrive and save time." "Good. "Ah, here, here!"Matthew suddenly stood up, holding the phone. "Addy, I'll have to hang up for now. I'm about to board the plane." On the other end of the call, a flurry of noise made it hard for Addison to hear his voice clearly. "Alright, then, take care!" Before Addison could finish speaking, the call abruptly ended. When Addison returned to the living room with her phone, she immediately noticed the odd tension in the air. However, her expression remained calm as she sat back in her original seat. She knew that such a stifling silence in the living room could only mean Virginia had stirred up trouble again. She did not need to intervene—Virginia would soon expose herself. Sure enough, just as Addison was about to settle in, Virginia couldn't hold back any longer and eagerly broke the silence. "Addison, who was that on the phone just now? "Was it that man I saw by the car last time? Or the one we ran into at the restaurant?" Virginia's bright eyes sparkled with a mischievous glint. "Oh, right, or could it be Mr. Fuller?" Virginia rattled off a list of men, each name causing Lance's expression to darken further. With every additional man mentioned, his eyes narrowed a fraction, and the lines of his face grew colder as if ready to unleash fury at any moment. Even Marilyn was taken aback, her face showing traces of confusion. Since whendid Addison knowsomanymen? Could Virginia be making thisuponpurpose? Listening to Virginia's provocations, Addison merely lowered her head and chuckled lightly. "Ms. Dolton, don't you think you're being too nosy? "It's important to maintain some basic boundaries as a person." She still had to perform a checkup for Steven and then pick up her grandfather at the airport. She had no time to waste on Virginia's nonsense. "You!" Virginia instinctively felt her composure slipping but quickly realized she was at the Johnston Residence. With Marilyn standing nearby, she immediately reined in her emotions and replaced them with a fragile demeanor. "Addison, how can you call this being nosy? "You're Lance's wife, yet you're entangled with other men. Am I not allowed to ask questions?" Virginia put on an innocent act, hoping Marilyn would take note of what kind of Addison she indeed had. "Or perhaps you're ... "
