The Replacement He Never Wanted
Marilyn came out of the kitchen carrying a steaming plate of fried chicken. Looking up, she saw Addison standing on the staircase and immediately called out in delight. In an instant, all eyes were on Addison. Virginia's big, expressive eyes were joyous at first, but when she spotted Addison, her cheerful expression vanished, replaced by an undisguised hatred. Lance stood at the bottom of the stairs, glancing distantly at Addison. His deep, enigmatic eyes revealed no trace of emotion. "Come on, breakfast is ready! "Lana, finish the rest here. I'll go help Addison," Marilyn turned to Lana and said. "No need, no need, I can manage the stairs myself." Addison quickly waved her hand, holding up the hem of her dress. "Don't trouble yourself." She wasn't so helpless that she needed someone to assist her just to go downstairs. Not wanting to inconvenience Marilyn, Addison quickened her steps, keeping her head down and focusing on her feet as she descended the stairs. She took the steps two at a time, careful not to lose her balance. But as she hurried, her gaze stayed fixed on the stairs, and she failed to notice a white box left in the corner. The box, whatever was inside, was heavy. The next second, Addison tripped over it. "Addison! Watch out!" Marilyn was the first to notice and rushed forward to help. But Lance was faster. He reached her before Marilyn could, grabbing Addison's right arm and steadying her with his left hand on her shoulder, stopping her just before she hit the ground. Addison could feel Lance's upper body leaning in close. That familiar scent from last night enveloped her again, faint but distinct. Instinctively, she looked up at him. Though deep and piercing, his eyes carried faint traces of exhaustion, marked by the bluish tinge beneath them. Even in the soft, uneven lighting, his sharp features stood out. Despite the weariness in his expression, his handsomeness remained undiminished. Their gazes locked briefly, and it was impossible to tell whose heartbeat was racing faster. "Thank you." Addison was the first to snap out of it, breaking the silence with her gratitude. She tried to pull away from his arms. Looking a little flustered, Lance immediately released his hold on her waist. Marilyn, watching the scene unfold, was grinning ear to ear. But when her eyes flicked to Virginia, whose face was now full of barely concealed resentment, Marilyn's mood lifted even more. Ah, Addison and Lance—theylookedsoperfecttogether. Thatmomentjustnow, withthetwoofthemholdingeachother, wassuch a beautifulsight! Absolutely a matchmade in heaven, a perfect pair ofbeautyandtalentdestinedtobetogether. Itseemedtheheavens had trulyblessedherbygiving Addison and Lance anotherchanceatlove. Meanwhile, Virginia's fingers clenched tightly around the fork resting on the dining table. Her sharp gaze stayed fixed on Lance's hand that had just been on Addison's waist, and her jaw tightened. When it came to women, their perception of each other's appearance was often razor-sharp, especially when it involved a potential rival. Virginia instantly noticed that Addison had put on light makeup. Her complexion today looked far better than it had yesterday. Without makeup, Addison was undeniably beautiful. But with makeup, her beauty transformed into something entirely different—radiant, glowing, unforgettable. Her red lips, white teeth, and graceful elegance were complemented by her poised demeanor.
