The Replacement He Never Wanted
Virginia's expression changed dramatically as she heard those words. She wanted to argue, but when she thought about it more carefully, what Lana said wasn't entirely untrue. Indeed, she was an unmarried woman. Lance and Addison were, in a sense, married. There wasn't much she could say to counter that. "Ms. Dolton, for the sake of the Johnstons' reputation, please come with me," Lana insisted. "You can't be sharing a room with a married couple. Even in normal families, if word gets out, it won't look good." Virginia's face twisted with discomfort as she turned to Lance for help. But when she looked around, she realized Lance had taken an urgent phone call and was turned away, dealing with business matters. There was no one to turn to for support. "Ms. Dolton, if you don't leave with me, I'll have to tell Mrs. Marilyn." Lana dropped Marilyn's name.Virginia stiffened. She was very wary of Marilyn and knew that if she didn't go now, Lana would indeed go straight to her. If Marilyn got involved, there was no doubt that Virginia would be dragged into something unpleasant. It was better to leave now and avoid a scene later. She looked up and met Addison's cold gaze. Though her heart burned with frustration, she had no choice but to swallow her anger. Full of rage, Virginia pulled the door open. She shot Lana a glare and stormed out with heavy footsteps. "Hey—Ms. Dolton, wait for me!" Lana called. Virginia, furious, couldn't care less about waiting. Without looking back, she left, leaving the door to slam behind her. Lana wasn't bothered by being ignored. Instead, she smiled, clearly in high spirits. Turning to Addison, she cheerfully waved. "Ms. Daves, I'll be leaving now." "Mm." Addison nodded. Lana touched the edge of the tea cup. She said, "Leave this tea for you. It's still hot!" "Wasn't this for Virginia?" Addison asked, a little surprised. Lana's smile grew brighter. "No, I spontaneously came up with that excuse!" She chuckled. "Mrs. Marilyn and Ms. Dolton aren't on good terms—there's no way she would've asked me to serve Virginia tea. "As soon as I saw the guest room empty, I knew Virginia must've come to the master bedroom. But I couldn't just walk in and kick her out of the room. "So, I came up with this plan." Lana whispered in Addison's ear, her voice low and conspiratorial. Addison's expression shifted to one of surprise. "Lana, I-I didn't expect you to be so ... " She struggled to find the right word. Addison had always perceived Lana as straightforward, but now she understands that Lana was quick-witted when necessary. "What were you two talking about?" a male voice suddenly interrupted.Lance had just finished his call and, turning around, saw Lana leaning in close to Addison, whispering in her ear. His brow furrowed. "Mr. Johnston, we weren't saying anything," Lana quickly responded, her gaze catching Lance's stern expression. She immediately set the tea down and rushed out of the room, calling over her shoulder, "Ms. Daves, I'll be going now." As Lana's figure disappeared out the door, Addison finally looked away. "What were you talking about?" Lance's suspicion was clear in his voice. Addison shrugged nonchalantly, trying to keep her composure. "Nothing important."
