The Replacement He Never Wanted
Lance's question was direct and clear. As soon as Virginia heard it, she quickly shook her head. "I didn't do it. I swear, I didn't mean for it to happen. I don't even know how the hair dryer fell, but I didn't throw it." There was no way she could admit that she had thrown the hair dryer on purpose. Doing so would only confirm her jealousy, and that was something she couldn't let happen. Lance listened quietly to her explanation, his gaze cold and distant. His silence filled the room with an intense tension that made the air feel heavy. Virginia felt a wave of unease wash over her, her heart racing with anxiety. She couldn't tell if Lance believed her or not. Just then, the sudden ringing of a phone broke the silence, drawing everyone's attention Lance looked at the phone vibrating on the table. It was a call from Addison. He lowered his gaze and reached for the phone, but before he could grab it, another hand shot out and snatched it first. "It's Addison!" Marilyn's tone softened immediately, her face lighting up with a bright expression. Seeing her reaction, Lance quietly pulled his hand back. Marilyn couldn't wait to pick up the call, clearly eager to speak to Addison. "Hello, Addison?" Before Addison could respond, Marilyn's voice came through the speaker, full of warmth. "Marilyn? Why are you answering the phone?" Addison raised an eyebrow in surprise. The voice on the other end of the line took her back in time. She suddenly realized how long it had been since she'd last heard Marilyn's voice. "Is something wrong? Do you not want me to answer the phone?" "Of course not," Addison said with a faint smile. "Do you miss me? I've been thinking about you lately ... " Marilyn spoke casually, as if no one else was around, completely ignoring Virginia who stood beside her.Virginia stood frozen by the dining table, listening to Marilyn's soft tone, feeling like she might explode with frustration. What did Marilyn mean? Was it intentional? The contrast between how Marilyn talked to Virginia—so cold—and how she spoke to Addison—so sweet—was too obvious. "I miss you too," Addison answered, still smiling. "Guess where I am right now?" Before Marilyn could respond, Addison continued, "I'm at Halton Airport. I'll be heading to the Johnston Residence soon." She made the call to give Lance a heads-up so that someone would be there to let her in when she arrived. Marilyn paused in surprise. "What? You're coming to Johnston Residence?" Her voice nearly slipped into a shout. Virginia's heart raced, and the spatula she was holding clattered to the floor. Was she hearing it right? Was Addison coming here? Addison was about to divorce Lance. Why would she visit now? Lance heard the noise and glanced over at Virginia with an unreadable expression. Feeling his eyes on her, Virginia quickly forced a smile, suppressing the jealousy twisting inside her, and bent down to pick up the spatula. "Addison, why are you suddenly coming to the Johnston Residence? When did you arrive? Are you here now? Do you need someone to pick you up? "Tell me what you'd like to eat. I'll have Lana make it right away." Marilyn sounded eager as she quickly listed off suggestions. On the other hand, Virginia's face twisted with discomfort, her pain almost visible. She stood still, listening to Marilyn's upbeat voice, feeling as if her heart was being ripped apart. Virginia bit her lip, casting a hopeful glance at Lance. "Lance, why is Addison coming here? Didn't you say she was leaving the Johnston Residence for good?" Her voice was soft, almost a whisper as if she were begging Lance to stop Addison from coming.Maybe because of what had just occurred, Lance's expression was far from pleasant. When Virginia looked up at him, clearly hoping for a reaction, he seemed completely unmoved. "Lance ... " Noticing that he was ignoring her, Virginia set the spatula down, hurried over to him, and softly tugged at his sleeve. Yet, he didn't even glance in her direction.
