The Replacement He Never Wanted

Chapter 399 Hair Dryer Incident

Lance held a teacup and nodded. "I heard you shouting downstairs yesterday. What happened?" Virginia, who had been silently fuming about Lana interrupting her plans, froze upon hearing Lance's question. Her heart skipped a beat. She was in trouble. She had forgotten that Lance's room was next to the guest room. Lana, hearing Lance's question, suddenly remembered what had happened the previous day. "Oh, right, Mr. Johnston! I nearly forgot. Yesterday, someone threw a hair dryer from upstairs, and it almost hit me." "A hair dryer?" Lance's usually relaxed expression shifted to one of focus. "Yes, it was pink," Lana confirmed. Lance immediately thought of the pink hair dryer he had given to Virginia. After Addison left, she took almost everything, leaving only a few things behind, including the hair dryer. Virginia had been close to Lance for so long that she knew how to read his emotions from his slightest gestures or glances.Right now, it was clear that Lance was annoyed. "Uh ... Lana, there's still a dish in the pot. I'm not very good at it. Could you teach me?" Virginia quickly tried to change the subject. "Oh, Ms. Dolton, you can't make that?" Lana asked, surprised. "Yes, I can't. Could you help me, please?" Virginia asked, dragging Lana toward the kitchen before she could respond. But no matter how fast she moved, Lance's voice called after her. "Virginia, what happened with the pink hair dryer?" Virginia, her back to Lance, briefly shut her eyes, silently resigning herself to the situation. She had hoped to avoid this confrontation, but it was clear that wouldn't happen. Standing still, she felt trapped. "Virginia, turn around and explain," Lance repeated in a low voice, his patience wearing thin. Virginia understood the tone well—it meant he was losing patience. Reluctantly, she let go of Lana's hand. "Lana, please keep an eye on the dishes in the kitchen."Lana nodded, confused, and left with a plate of pill bottles. Once Lana was gone, Virginia hesitated for a moment before turning around as if preparing for something unpleasant. As soon as she turned around, her eyes met Marilyn's, which seemed to silently scrutinize her. Though Marilyn's expression was calm, there was a sharpness in her gaze that couldn't be ignored. It was just as piercing as Lance's cold stare. Caught under the intense gaze of both of them, Virginia began to feel uneasy. "Lance ... that hair dryer is the one you gave me yesterday," she admitted, her voice filled with resignation. Lance's expression darkened, his eyes narrowing at her words. Before he could say anything, Virginia hurriedly added, "But I didn't mean to drop it! I just lost my grip and it fell. Please don't take it the wrong way!" Lance's face remained stoic, his thoughts hidden behind a cold exterior. Just when Virginia thought the worst was over and expected some silence, Lance spoke again."Were you blow-drying your hair near the window?" The question took Virginia completely by surprise. "What?" "The socket in the guest room is in the middle of the room. How could you have been blow-drying your hair by the window?" His eyes seemed to probe deeper as if searching for the truth. It was clear that he didn't believe her. With that pointed question, her lie was completely exposed. Virginia felt her forehead dampen with sweat, struggling to find her words. "I ... I ... " She hadn't thought through her excuse. She had made it up on the spot, never expecting Lance to catch the flaw so quickly. Marilyn, sitting beside Lance, ate her breakfast in a leisurely manner, as though she were simply watching a drama unfold. It was obvious that she enjoyed the tension between the two. Marilyn likely hoped for a conflict between Lance and Virginia, one that would make way for her true daughter-in-law, Addison, to return. Seeing Virginia falter, standing there nervously with no answer, Lance knew the truth. "Why did you do it? Why did you throw the hair dryer out of the window?"
