The Replacement He Never Wanted

Chapter 382 Torn Loyalties

Virginia nodded. "I'll be careful to avoid the broken pieces. I won't cause you any trouble." She appeared utterly gentle at that moment, as if the furious outburst from moments ago had been someone else entirely. The doctor's caution dissipated, and he bent down with a furrowed brow, immediately going out to find someone to clean up the room. Lance stood outside, holding his phone, hesitating for a long while before finally dialing Addison's number. "Mr. Johnston, is something wrong?" Addison's voice came through, surprisingly quick to answer. "I believe you." He suddenly blurted this out with no lead-up. Addison understood immediately. Her expression remained neutral. "Then please prepare the divorce agreement for me to sign." "Exchanging a signature for a life, it's still a bargain." Lance's lips pressed into a thin line, hinting at his displeasure. However, with Steven's life in Addison's hands, he couldn't afford to show his anger. "I'm heading back to Halton today. Has the time been set for the Divine Healer to treat my grandfather?" he asked. "Time." Addison was sitting in a wicker lounge chair, one hand holding the phone, the other carefully selecting herbs. Upon hearing Lance's question, she raised an eyebrow and glanced at the distant scene. Leon and Morris were crouched on the ground, hammering and chiseling, trying to rebuild a makeshift stove. After all, the kitchen had been burned down, so the stove had inevitably been destroyed. But none of the four had eaten yet. They couldn't afford to starve in the valley, so they had to find a way to cook food. Hence, the two were working on 'lighting' their new skills. Meanwhile, Matthew silently stood in front of the dark kitchen. Though he said it didn't matter, he was trying to fix it. "What time works best for you, Mr. Johnston?" Addison turned her attention back to the conversation. "The sooner, the better." Without hesitation, Lance replied. Addison thought for a moment. "Within this week." Steven's illness couldn't be delayed; treating it as soon as possible was better. At the same time, setting the time with Lance meant that Addison would have to return to Halton. After all, given her mysterious identity, she couldn't return with Matthew. With Dr. Nancy's sensitive position, both Kreshill and Halton had countless eyes watching. It could endanger him if she appeared by Matthew's side and was spotted. The best plan was for her to return to Halton first. Once Matthew arrived in Kreshill, she would go with Lance to bring him back to the Johnston Residence. That seemed to be the safest route. "This week?" Lance seemed to contemplate the feasibility."Isn't that too long? My grandpa's body can't wait that long." They had already delayed quite a bit in Kreshill, and there wasn't much time left for Matthew. Just then, Virginia appeared in a pale pink dress, walking out of the hospital, with the doctor in a white coat quietly following behind, carrying a box. "Lance, I'm all packed!" Virginia jogged toward Lance. Lance was caught off guard. Her sudden interruption nearly made him drop his phone. Addison's voice crackled through the phone, "You're not happy with a week's delay?" Virginia wrapped her arms around Lance and rested her ear against his chest. Instantly, she picked up on the voice coming through the phone. Addison? Lance was on the phone with Addison? The smile on Virginia's face instantly disappeared, replaced by a difficult-to-hide expression. "Lance, Are you on the phone with Addison?" Her eyes were wide and pitiful, as if she might burst into tears. Lance didn't answer directly, instead moving her away from his chest."Stand up and talk properly. There are too many people around. This isn't appropriate." Virginia reluctantly stood up. But she didn't want to leave. She clung tightly to Lance's hand, her face growing pale, her eyes filled with unshed tears. "Lance, Are you really on the phone with Addison?" This time, Lance had no choice but to answer. "Yes, I'm on the phone with Addison." The words hit like a thunderclap. Virginia immediately bit her lip, tears streaming down her face, her eyes wide in shock as she stared at him. "Hello?" Addison could hear the noise on the other end of the line, though it wasn't very clear. She vaguely heard Virginia calling her name. It didn't take much thought for Addison to know precisely what was happening. Lance was in for a rough time.
