The Replacement He Never Wanted

Chapter 291 Back to the Residence

"Two or three hours?" Matthew frowned slightly at the nurse's response. The nurse, unsure of the reason for his frown, quickly assumed he was dissatisfied with the time given for Addison's recovery. She immediately tried to clarify, "That's the time the doctor gave me. I don't know the exact timing, but if you're unhappy with it, you can ask the attending physician. "If you want her to wake up faster, I can't help, but the doctor might be able to. Would you like me to call them?" Now aware of their identities, the nurse was careful not to make any mistakes. "No, no." Matthew waved her off. "Hand me the vital signs sheet." The nurse quickly retrieved the sheet and handed it over without hesitation. Leon, standing off to the side, felt a pang of frustration. Why had the nurse given the sheet to Matthew so easily? When he had asked for it earlier, he'd received nothing. Was it his lack of presence? Or was he simply not as charming? Surely, though, he couldn't be less charming than a geezer. If it had been a younger guy, Leon might have understood, but this? It just didn't make sense. He puzzled over this silently, unable to make sense of it. Meanwhile, Matthew quickly scanned the vital signs sheet. After a brief glance, he saw that Addison's vital signs were back to normal. She was fine. So, his son hadn't been lying. Matthew's worry finally lifted. At that moment, a bodyguard handed him a glass of water. Matthew accepted it and sat down on a nearby couch. He placed the report on the table, then casually asked, "Where did you find Angel?"Leon blinked, caught off guard. "Uh ... " "Technically, I am not the guy who found her," he replied, almost reflexively. Matthew looked at him, confused. "If not you, then who?" "They saved Angel's life. We owe them a proper thank you." At the mention of a thank you, Leon felt a tight knot in his stomach. He nervously rubbed his hands together. If Matthew learned it was Lance who had saved Angel, the gratitude would likely vanish in an instant. "Why aren't you saying anything?" Matthew asked, taking a sip of his tea without looking up. "They saved my granddaughter's life. I need to thank them properly." Matthew's words hung in the air as he continued, "I wonder what we can do for them ... " Leon watched as Matthew seemed genuinely deep in thought, almost as though he truly felt grateful. Leon couldn't help but feel a sense of dread. Why did it have to be Lance who saved Angel? Finally, after several moments of hesitation, and sensing Matthew's patience wearing thin, Leon reluctantly answered the question. "It was Lance." Matthew froze, his smile stiffening. The tea almost lodged in his throat, and he struggled to swallow. Then he sputtered. He bent forward, coughing, his face flushing with the effort. Leon flinched, quickly stepping forward to pat Matthew's back. "Easy, Dad. You shouldn't choke. You know how dangerous that is for people your age." Matthew cleared his throat several times before finally regaining his voice. "I'm sorry, who did you say found her again?" Leon straightened, his expression unreadable. "Lance." Though he kept calm on the outside, his heart pounded."The same guy I'm thinking of?" Matthew asked, still processing the name. Leon nodded. "Yeah." Immediately, Matthew's face darkened. He put the cup of tea aside, suddenly uninterested, and stood up from the couch in one swift motion. "Dad, what's wrong?" Leon asked, taken aback. Matthew ignored him, pacing the room with his hands behind his back, deep in thought. After a moment, he stopped and turned. "How are things between Angel and Lance?" Leon hesitated, trying to piece together his response. "Their relationship ... " Seems fine, I guess. But just as he was about to speak further, an uneasy thought crossed his mind. When he went to find Angel earlier, she had been staying at Pendomium Heights, not with Lance. Had they been living apart? Did that mean something had gone wrong? No, he quickly dismissed the thought. It didn't make sense. Earlier, when he'd tried to set Angel up with Ryan, Angel hadn't said much, but Leon could tell she wasn't interested. He had also talked smack about Lance in front of her. She hadn't responded, but something felt off. Today, when Lance had cradled Angel in his arms at the hospital, holding her like she was something precious—protective and possessive—it was clear how much he cared. That tenderness in his eyes wasn't fake. And Lance had made a point of telling Leon he was Angel's husband, as if afraid someone might take her from him. With all this in mind, how bad could their relationship really be? Leon sighed heavily. "Why aren't you saying anything? Stop sighing!" Matthew snapped, impatience creeping into his voice. "Just give me a straight answer. Is their relationship alright, or is it suffering?" Leon knew exactly what Matthew expected to hear, but the truth was undeniable: Angel and Lance's relationship seemed stable. He couldn't bring himself to lie about it, not even for his father. He hesitated, then said carefully, "It's probably still going well?" Matthew's face immediately darkened. "Going well?" he exclaimed. "How well can it really be?" "Living with some poor guy—how could that be a good life?" "And the Johnstons—they may look rich, but everything inside is a disaster. Their company? Nothing special." "I honestly don't see what's so great about them. What could they possibly offer Angel?" Matthew's frustration grew. His neck flushed with anger, and he seemed on the verge of losing control. Leon sighed inwardly. His father knew very well that Angel and Lance were doing fine, but he still insisted on asking as if hoping for a different answer. What was the point? This was only making things more difficult. "Keep your voice down, Dad. Angel's still asleep," Leon urged, refilling Matthew's cup and motioning for him to sit down. But Matthew, in one of his stubborn moods, refused to comply. Quickly thinking, Leon offered another idea "What if we bring Angel back to the residence once she wakes up?" he suggested. "That way, she'll have someone to look after her, and maybe ... we can convince her to divorce Lance." "What do you think?" The moment the words left his mouth, Matthew froze. He stopped pacing. The room grew still. Leon held his breath, waiting for his father's response.
