The Replacement He Never Wanted

Chapter 290 Affection

Lance tightened his grip on the phone and glanced at Leon one last time before turning and walking away. The sound of his leather shoes scraping against the floor was the only noise that broke the silence. Leon stood still, momentarily stunned. He blinked, trying to make sense of Lance's look. What had that been? Why had Lance looked at him like that? It was unsettling, to say the least. Leon's heart, which had been racing, gradually slowed. He absentmindedly rolled up his sleeve, feeling a chill creep over him. Goosebumps had already started to form on his skin. Despite Lance being younger, that look had been sharp and intimidating. It had felt like a weight pressing down on him. Even Leon, who had seen and endured much in his life, had never been on the receiving end of a gaze like that before. How could Lance have such an intense stare? Leon absentmindedly rubbed his arm, lost in thought. Just then, a knock echoed from the door, pulling him back to reality. He quickly shook off the strange feeling. "Come in," he called. A nurse entered, pushing a small cart. "Good afternoon, I'm here to change Ms. Daves' dressing." Leon glanced at the cart and eyed the medications it carried, sweeping his gaze over them. To him, they looked like low-tier drugs. If these were meant for Angel ... He shook his head, his disapproval quiet but firm. "No, thank you. Take the medications out. "I'll handle the dressing change myself." The nurse hesitated, clearly unsure. "Mr. Johnston specifically told us ... to take extra care of Ms. Daves." Leon nodded without hesitation. "I am taking care of her." The nurse's eyes narrowed in suspicion, as if unsure of his intentions. Mr. Johnston had warned them about this man.He had been clear—no one should let him get too close to Ms. Daves. The nurse scanned the room, then looked at Leon, her suspicion mounting. Based on Mr. Johnston's instructions, she could only assume this was the man he had meant. "Sorry, I think it's best if I handle this," she said, politely but firmly, refusing Leon's request. Seeing her determination, Leon didn't argue. "The dressing change is fine, but we'll need to use different medication. The ones you have aren't appropriate for Angel." He turned to the door and called out, "Doctor, please bring the new medications from the car for Angel. You know which ones we need." The doctor, who had been lingering just outside, straightened immediately when he heard Leon's voice. He nodded quickly. "Right away, Dr. Daves. I'll go get them now." With that, he dashed off down the hall. The nurse stood frozen, her mind racing over Leon's words. "Not suitable?"The medications she had brought were the ones Mr. Johnston had insisted on. They were the best available at the hospital. But he thinks they're not appropriate? The medication was so costly that most people couldn't possibly afford it. Without Mr. Johnston's specific instructions, the hospital wouldn't have even considered providing it to Ms. Daves. This guy had no idea how fortunate he was. The nurse rolled her eyes, unable to hold back. She did it so obviously that Leon couldn't miss it. "What did you—" Leon blinked, stunned. He hadn't expected her to do that right in front of him. He stared at her, completely thrown off. He touched his nose, trying to compose himself. What was going on in this city? Was everyone here this rude? He had just dealt with one impolite person—Lance—and now another one. It was becoming unbelievable. The nurse continued her work, removing Addison's IV, then pulling a bag of medicine from the cart. She moved quickly, not acknowledging Leon's earlier request. Leon stood there, frustrated. He didn't say a word. Interrupting her would have been inappropriate, and his manners wouldn't allow for that. Fortunately, the doctor came in with the new medication. "Dr. Daves, I've brought the medication!" Leon stepped forward, accepting the medication and tossing it to the nurse. The nurse caught it, her hands trembling. "Give this to Angel. If you're not sure about it, have the attending doctor check the ingredients." Leon's voice was polite but strained. The nurse glanced at the medication in her hands. She didn't scrutinize the ingredients, but the name on the package was hard to miss. "The Daves." It was clear.Anyone who saw that label would recognize it immediately. The nurse's eyes widened. Her hands shook as she held the bag. This couldn't be right, could it? The Daves' medicine? In a place like Preigh? Preigh was too small for anything like this. Even the regular top families from Kreshill wouldn't have their medicine here. "Is there a problem?" Leon noticed the nurse had frozen, her hands still. He leaned down, his voice gentle as he asked, "Are you unsure how to use this medication? "I can show you." The nurse snapped out of her trance and looked up at Leon. His tone was calm, his composure unshaken. Despite his age, there was a refinement about him. Realizing how she had just rolled her eyes at him, the nurse wished she could disappear into the floor from sheer embarrassment. It was a mess. What had she just done? "This IV is almost empty," Leon said, unable to hold back as he noticed the nurse hadn't moved. "Sorry, sorry, I'll change it right away." The nurse flashed a smile, her tone changing completely as she became more polite. Leon was taken aback by how quickly she'd shifted. Before he could process the moment, a commotion from outside the door caught his attention. Matthew entered first, followed by a group of bodyguards. The men, all dressed in black suits, crowded the room, leaving little space to move. The air in the room thickened with tension. It almost felt like a high-stakes event. The nurse, startled by the sudden intrusion, nearly dropped the needle. "Dad, what are you doing here?" Leon rushed to greet him.Matthew smiled, but his eyes were full of suspicion. Leon hadn't told him about Angel's condition, so how had Matthew known where to find her? "What, I can't come here? Is this place off-limits to me?" Matthew replied, his voice colder than usual. He didn't even look at Leon as he walked directly toward Addison's bed. "What's going on with Angel? Is it serious?" His voice was laced with concern. Leon quickly shook his head. "It's nothing. After the anesthesia wears off, everything should be fine. Don't worry too much, Dad." If he told Matthew the full truth, it would be trouble for him. Matthew scoffed. "How can I not worry? "I heard about Angel being hospitalized from someone else. "You're useless, boy." Leon nodded quickly, apologizing repeatedly. "You're right. It's all my fault." The first rule when dealing with Matthew was to never make him angry. Everything had to go his way. Otherwise, the consequences could be severe. Of course, this rule didn't apply to Angel. She was his favorite. "When Angel wakes up, I want to move her to our hospital. What do you think?" Leon asked. "Fine. This place isn't up to standard anyway," Matthew agreed. The bed was uncomfortable, the window small, and the lighting was poor. Angel would definitely be uncomfortable here. The nurse, who was still working on the dressing, couldn't help but overhear the conversation, her anxiety growing with every word. These people were from the Daves? Her legs started to tremble, and she could barely stay on her feet. She was just a nurse—how was she supposed to be in the presence of the Daves? This was too much for her! "When will Angel wake up?" Matthew asked, noticing the nurse shaking nearby."Two ... Maybe three hours ... " The nurse's voice was shaky.
