The Replacement He Never Wanted

Chapter 244 Playing the Victim

"Is what you're saying really true?" Georgina asked, her eyes wide with disbelief. The woman had just spoken rather boldly, but she didn't seem the type to do such things. She was trying to steal Virginia's man? And even go so far as to ruin her life? That seemed too ruthless. Georgina was stunned, unable to process what she had just heard. She thought about Addison again—dressed impeccably, with flawless features that were almost otherworldly. She carried herself with a calm grace, like someone untouched by the world. That woman didn't seem like someone capable of such cruelty. Virginia, watching Georgina closely, saw her disbelief. Immediately, her expression shifted, her brow furrowing with an almost tangible sense of hurt. "I knew no one would believe me," she whispered, her voice filled with sorrow. "I told Lance about this too, but he didn't believe me. And neither did his family. Addison fooled them all, and no one believed me." As she spoke, Virginia's voice trembled, the weight of her emotions threatening to break her composure. Tears welled up in her eyes, but she quickly blinked them back, unwilling to let Georgina see her weakness, trying instead to maintain some shred of dignity. "Forget it ... I've gotten used to it," she continued bitterly. "I was born to suffer, and everyone believes Addison because she has the looks. Whatever she says, they believe her. "And no matter what I say, they think I'm just causing trouble." Her beautiful face, usually so composed, was now tightly drawn with sorrow, her eyes filled with deep regret. But even in her sadness, she exuded a quiet strength. She wouldn't let anyone see her weaknesses. She resembled a delicate flower, fragile yet unbreakable. Georgina watched her, her heart aching. She no longer even cared whether Addison was truly that cruel.Seeing Virginia like this, so delicate and hurt, made it hard not to believe her. She rushed to comfort her, "Don't be sad, Virginia." Virginia waved her hand and stepped back, distancing herself by a few paces. "Ms. Hamilton, it's okay; you don't need to worry about me." Her face was set in a determined mask. "I've just been holding all this in for so long. I don't know what happened today, but everything just came out at once," she explained. "Sorry to make you uncomfortable." Georgina handed her a tissue and said, "No, no, it's okay. If you're upset, you should talk about it. We only live once. You can't keep all this inside—it'll hurt you in the end." Virginia nodded slowly, looking somewhat relieved. "Mmm, it does help to talk about it." Georgina was about to say more, but the saleswoman arrived with the paperwork. "Ms. Hamilton, the car is ready." Georgina looked up casually, replying, "Okay." Her eyes never left Virginia's face, her concern still visible. Virginia saw the worry in her eyes and felt touched. She quickly spoke up, "Ms. Hamilton, go ahead. Don't worry about me; I'm not that fragile." Georgina stayed still, still unsure. "Are you sure you're okay?" she asked again. "I'm fine, really," Virginia said, watching as Georgina's face crinkled in concern. Georgina's expression was completely unguarded, full of worry. Virginia smiled through the tension, gently pushing Georgina toward the door. "You've got your own business to deal with. Go ahead and get the car!" She felt a small sense of satisfaction that her performance wasn't for nothing. Georgina saw the smile return to Virginia's face, and she finally relaxed. "Wait here. I'll get the car and then go get your invitations," Georgina said. "Thank you!" Virginia replied, nodding sincerely. As Georgina walked out with the saleswoman, Virginia felt a weight lift from her chest.Thankfully, she had reacted quickly and made sure her expression conveyed exactly what she needed. She had carefully shifted her face into a look of quiet distress, and it was enough to convince Georgina. Virginia was satisfied; she sat down in a chair, allowing herself a moment to think. She had just finished interacting with Georgina, but now Addison was the center of her attention. Something about Addison's sudden appearance earlier had unsettled her. Virginia had spent so long trying to cozy up to Troy, clinging to him in hopes of securing a backup plan for herself. To her dismay, Troy had turned out to be a complete disappointment. He foolishly got in Lance's way, causing a whole mess that ruined everything she had worked for. All her efforts to secure a position, to hold on to a powerful ally, were wasted. The frustration bubbled up inside her, her anger flaring at the thought of it. But fortune had smiled upon her in the form of Georgina. She had found another powerful figure to latch onto. This time, she couldn't afford to let Addison sabotage her plans. Virginia decided she had to keep an eye on Addison and make sure she wouldn't have any chance to interfere. She was determined to prevent Georgina from escaping her control. ... Georgina moved swiftly. After she acquired the car, she quickly got Virginia two invitations to the Medical Symposium. With her family standing in Kreshill, getting those invitations was as easy as pie. Virginia finally got her hand on the invitation. Crafted from rare rosewood, with delicate glass inlays around the edges and ebony at the base, the invitations were a symbol of prestige. The elegant letter of invitation inscribed in the center of the ancient-looking material made it clear that this was an event of the highest order. Virginia looked at the heavy invitations in her hand. No doubt, these were for an exclusive gathering—the Medical Symposium was the crème de la crème. Without hesitation, she pulled out her phone and dialed Isaac."Isaac, where's Lance? I need to speak with him," she said, her voice sweet and urgent. Lance had been hard to track down lately. His whereabouts seemed to change every day, and he was often unreachable. Virginia had tried visiting him several times, hoping to mend things between them, but each attempt had ended in failure. "Mr. Johnston?" Isaac glanced at the CEO's office. "He's in his office." "Good," Virginia replied, feeling relieved. "I'll go see him now." Virginia was determined to personally hand the invitation to Lance. When Isaac heard that Virginia was coming to the office, he nearly dropped his phone in shock. "Ms. Dolton, you're coming to the office?" Isaac stammered. "Why? Is that a problem?" Virginia asked, confused by Isaac's overly dramatic reaction. "N-no, of course not!" Isaac quickly recovered, but his thoughts were not so reassuring. She recently upset the boss. It hasn't even been a week, and now she wants to see him again? She was just going to annoy Mr. Johnston even more. He couldn't understand why she didn't realize some things were better left alone. Virginia's timing was terrible; Mr. Johnston was still upset, and her visit was just going to pour gasoline on the fire. Half an hour later, Virginia stood outside the CEO's office, and as Isaac had predicted, she was met with rejection. She stood there awkwardly with the eyes of the staff and assistants on her. Her hand dropped slowly from the door after she had knocked, and she felt the weight of humiliation on her face. Her image in the company had always been that of a high-status, graceful girlfriend, spoiled by Lance. But now, to be rejected so publicly, clearly meant she was no longer in Lance's good books. Once adored, Lance was now pushing her away. In an instant, the reputation she had painstakingly built over time crumbled.
