The Replacement He Never Wanted

Chapter 233 Winning His Heart Back

Addison walked into the study and picked up her phone. An unfamiliar number was calling. She furrowed her brow, briefly pondering whether to answer the call. Due to her unique position, few people had access to her private number, and as such, she never answered calls from unknown numbers. As she hesitated, the phone's ringing slowly faded, and then it stopped altogether. Addison glanced down at her screen; the caller had hung up. Has that person given up? She raised an eyebrow. The person had decided this for her. She put the phone down and went to freshen up, dismissing the call from her mind. After she finished washing up and had dinner, Leon walked in through the front door, just as he finished his work for the day. "Mr. Daves, welcome home!" Rosa was the first to notice him. Addison turned at the sound. Leon had just taken off his overcoat, looking weary. His eyes lacked their usual sparkle, his lips were turned down, and the wrinkles on his face seemed more pronounced. He looked utterly exhausted. Addison quickly stood and walked toward him. "How do you manage to work so late every day? Doesn't the event organizer have enough staff?" Leon smiled lightly. "For a symposium this large, how could they be short on staff? They're not lacking money to hire more people." "Then why stay so late? Aren't you just working for free?" Addison spoke with a hint of reproach. "If you wear yourself out, wouldn't that be a waste?" Leon waved his hand, putting on a relaxed face. "It's nothing; I can handle a little bit of hard work." But Addison could still see through his forced smile. She understood that since Leon had accepted the task from Matthew, her uncle was determined to ensure everything was in order. Matthew hadn't appeared in public for a long time, and this medical symposium was a rare event, so there could be people with ulterior motives. Safety was the highest priority. Moreover, he was getting on in age now, so the trip, his diet, and accommodations for the symposium needed careful planning. Addison lowered her gaze, choosing not to press further. Instead, she changed the subject. "Uncle Leon, you haven't had dinner yet, right? "Rosa, please whip something up for Uncle Leon's dinner," she called to Rosa. Rosa nodded and left to prepare the meal. "Addy, I need to tell you something." Leon sat down, pulling out a chair. Addison looked up. "Are you planning to attend the Medical Symposium?" Leon asked. "Hmm?" Addison raised an eyebrow. "Me?" Leon nodded, rubbing his hands nervously. "Dad will be there, so you'll get a chance to see him. "You haven't seen him in a while; you must miss him, right?" Addison grew nervous. It was true—she missed him—but she wasn't ready to face him just yet. "Well ... " Before she could respond, her eyes caught Rosa carrying food into the room. Addison immediately stood to take the plates. "Uncle Leon, let's eat first," she said, placing the meal in front of him. "You must be exhausted after all that work." Leon gave her a look, seemingly helpless. This child, every time he brought up meeting the family, she always changed the subject. Addison pushed the plate closer to Leon, a smile on her face, her eyes sparkling brightly, making it hard to get upset with her. "The food tonight is all your favorite." Leon grinned, seeming to give in. He took the plate and fork. "Alright, alright, I'll listen to you. Let's eat first." ... Meanwhile, Lance was fuming in his car, cold air filling the space. "Boss, where are we heading now?" Isaac, sitting in the driver's seat, glanced at Lance through the rearview mirror.Lance's face was dark, his arms crossed in frustration. Lost in his thoughts, he didn't answer Isaac. Isaac hesitated, then spoke again. "Boss, Ms. Dolton came to the office to see you earlier. She looked seriously injured and still came to find you. It seemed kind of sad. "Do you want to go check on her?" Virginia had his leverage, and despite his boss being in a mood today, Isaac still had to carry out the task given by her. The mention of Virginia's name finally brought a reaction from Lance. He furrowed his brows, pulling himself out of his anger. "Virginia came to see me? Didn't she injure her leg? Why isn't she at home resting?" "Ms. Dolton came to find you, but you were busy with the invitation, so she didn't want to disturb you," Isaac explained. Isaac glanced at Lance's expression, sensing he didn't plan on visiting Virginia. So, he decided to push a little further. "When she came yesterday, she looked so pitiful. I tried to convince her to go home and rest, but she insisted on seeing you. "Maybe when people are injured, they just want to see their closest person. But you've been so busy, and since she has no family in Halton, she's been desperate to see you." As expected, Lance's expression changed when he said that. He lowered his gaze, a trace of remorse flashing across his face. "Fine, let's go to her apartment." Since Virginia's accident, he hadn't visited her even once. He recalled that night, seeing Virginia limp from the car with her wounded leg, tears in her eyes, and a completely pitiful expression. Even though she lied to him, she was hurt, and he knew he had to check on her. "Understood!" Isaac smiled, nodding as he immediately started the engine. As the car revved to life, Isaac quickly took out his phone and sent a message to Virginia. "Mr. Johnston is heading to your apartment." Once he saw the message was read, Isaac pocketed his phone, and the car sped off. Not long later, they arrived at Virginia's apartment. The doorbell rang, and Francesca quickly set aside the bandages she was working with and went to answer the door. "Mr. Johnston, please come in." Lance nodded, his face neutral, but as soon as he stepped inside, the sharp smell of alcohol and antiseptic hit him. Looking around, he saw Virginia sitting on the couch, her injured leg propped up on a wooden stool, bandages and medical supplies scattered nearby. The apartment felt heavy, the atmosphere oppressive, and Virginia looked frail and helpless. "Lance, what a surprise." Virginia's face lit up with joy as she saw him enter, her expression one of pleasant surprise. She was about to stand up to greet him. Lance saw her movement and rushed to stop her. "You're hurt. Stay seated." But it was too late. Virginia wobbled to her feet but stumbled, about to fall. "Ah—" Her voice was soft and delicate. Lance quickly stepped forward, catching her before she hit the ground. He lifted her effortlessly into his arms, cradling her against his broad chest. Virginia nestled against his broad chest, her gaze falling on his chiseled jawline. A subtle, intimate atmosphere filled the air. Virginia smiled to herself, knowing she would win his heart back soon enough.
