The Replacement He Never Wanted
Virginia sat in her apartment, the table in front of her stacked with plates of food, but she had no desire to eat. Her fingers nervously played with the silverware, the restlessness clear in her every movement. Why hadn't she received any word? A full day had passed. With Troy's abilities, there's no way he hadn't caught them by now. Francesca stepped closer, noticing the distracted look on Virginia's face. She asked, "Ms. Dolton, is the food not to your taste?" Virginia barely glanced up at her, absorbed in her thoughts. She didn't answer. Restless, Virginia switched on the TV, letting it provide some background noise. The anchor's voice cut through the silence: "Tomorrow, Mr. Leon from a Kreshill pharmaceutical family will host a consultation at Westgate." "Halton residents, especially those with heart conditions, are encouraged to take advantage of this rare opportunity." "You'll have the chance to receive a personal consultation from Mr. Leon, an opportunity that doesn't come often ... " Virginia's attention snapped back to the screen. Tomorrow, Dr. Daves will be at Westgate? Addison always seemed so eager to gain Dr. Daves's favor. She will definitely be there, right? This could be the opening she needed. Virginia quickly grabbed her phone and dialed Troy's number. It rang once, twice, before he picked up. "What's going on? Did you catch them?" She asked, getting straight to the point. Troy's voice sounded thick with sleep. "Catch them?" Virginia's frustration surged. Was Troy toying with her? "You didn't forget the person I told you to grab yesterday, did you?"Troy's voice cleared, a small chuckle escaping him. "Of course not. How could I forget?" Virginia's stomach turned at his smug tone. "Then why haven't you delivered any results yet?" Why is it taking so long? Troy sounded uncertain. "I'm not really sure." Since assigning the task to Samuel yesterday, Troy has not contacted him again. "Don't worry, princess. I've already sent someone after them. We'll have an update today," Troy assured her with confidence. Virginia gave an exaggerated roll of her eyes. His tone didn't suggest any real urgency about the situation. It was clear she would have to do everything herself. Troy was utterly unreliable. Clenching her fists, she spoke firmly. "I expect results soon, or we're done here." Without waiting for a reply, she ended the call. As soon as the phone went silent, Virginia stood up. She changed into a simple black hoodie, covering herself with a matching mask. To ensure no one would recognize her, she added a black hat. She stared at her reflection in the mirror, satisfied by how unrecognizable she looked. Since Troy couldn't be counted on, she would have to handle things herself. Francesca's voice rang out from behind. "Ms. Dolton, you were nearly sick yesterday. You should stay home and rest today!" Virginia didn't acknowledge her, walking out without a word. Francesca watched her leave, sighing. Mr. Johnston had asked her to keep a close eye on Virginia, but she knew she couldn't stop her.At a luxurious hotel, Troy lay on the bed. He glanced at his phone, noticing the call had been abruptly cut off. A smirk spread across his face. Is she mad? He tossed the covers aside and got out of bed. A woman's voice protested. "Mr. Troy, why did you take the blanket off? I'm not dressed," the woman complained, her exposed skin and half-closed eyes tempting. Troy glanced at her, then turned his gaze away, uninterested in her antics. "You can leave once you're dressed," he said, his voice devoid of emotion. Without another word, he walked out, leaving the woman behind, still wrapped in the blanket. "Mr. Troy, how can you be like this?" she muttered. Troy made his way to the boxing gym and ran into Samuel just as he was preparing to leave. He grabbed Samuel by the arm. "Where are they?" "We didn't catch them ... " Samuel mumbled, looking uncomfortable. Before he could say anything else, Troy's fist landed squarely on his chest, sending him stumbling back. "I told you that woman wouldn't be easy to catch. I told you to put more effort into it, but what did you do?" Samuel didn't snap, instead offering a weak explanation. "I brought three full cars of men. But she drove like a maniac and slipped away right under our noses." As he spoke, he remembered the chaos of the previous night. Two of his men were now in the hospital, their injuries severe. That woman was going to pay for this. "But Mr. Troy, I swear I'll bring her in!" Samuel's anger was clear in his eyes.Troy didn't hesitate. Another punch landed, hard and quick. "If you can't bring her back, don't bother showing up at the estate." "Mr. Jordan." A voice called from behind. Troy turned and saw a figure clad in black, only her eyes visible. "Who are you?" he asked, his gaze narrowing. There was something oddly familiar about those eyes. "Don't recognize me?" The woman stepped forward, her voice unmistakable. "Princess?" Troy's expression shifted as he finally placed the eyes. "How did you find me?" Virginia pressed her lips together, not answering right away. She had prepared for this. She knew she had to understand Troy's world before coming after him. Although she couldn't get any direct information on him, she'd spent time studying his men. She knew exactly where they went. She never went into anything without being ready. Noticing her silence, Troy tilted his head, intrigued. "What's wrong, princess? Cat got your tongue?" "Are you stalking me?" He smiled, half-teasing. Virginia met his gaze. "Mr. Jordan, you've got quite the imagination. I'd never have that kind of aptitude." Her real purpose was to find his men, though she hadn't known Troy would be here herself. "I wouldn't dare stalk you. You're one of Halton's bluebloods," Virginia said, dismissing the idea with a sharp tone. She wasn't interested in continuing the conversation with Troy. Her mind was focused on one thing: making Addison pay. Virginia smiled at Troy, her voice becoming calmer. "I just didn't want you to forget our agreement, so I came to refresh your memory."She made sure to stress the word "agreement". Troy caught her meaning right away. He grabbed Virginia and pulled her in front of Samuel. "The woman in the photo? She's the one the princess ordered us to capture." "She even showed up here herself to push us along. We have to do this right." "Otherwise, how will we even face her?" Troy said, reaching out to lightly touch Virginia's chin. Virginia shot him a look and pushed his hand away. His tone sounded far too smug for her liking. Samuel, who had worked closely with Troy for years, could tell that Troy was particularly interested in the masked woman. He spoke quickly, "Don't worry, lady. We'll handle it." He glanced at the figure hidden under layers of black. There was no way to tell who she was. If it weren't for Troy's nickname for her, he wouldn't have even guessed if she were a man or a woman. One detail caught his attention, though—there was a charm around her neck. He could just make out the faint symbol of a name, and it looked like it could be worth something. "Tomorrow, the Daves are holding a medical consultation at Westgate. You can find your quarry there," Virginia said. Samuel's expression shifted slightly. He had all the information he needed and planned to act today. But since the woman had suggested waiting until tomorrow, he figured it would be best to hold off. His men needed time to recover before they went out to avenge their team members who were still in the hospital.
