The Replacement He Never Wanted
Virginia's expression darkened as she saw who had arrived. Her face immediately dropped, and she couldn't hide her frustration. "Addison, what are you doing here again?" Addison was like a persistent shadow, always showing up at the most inconvenient times. "What's the problem? Can't I be here?" Addison responded, glancing around the room. Her eyes quickly found her uncle. "This isn't your hospital, so who are you to question me?" Addison retorted as she walked toward Leon. Leon saw his niece approaching and scratched his head. He glanced at his watch, surprised. How had Angel tracked him down so fast? Just as Addison was almost next to him, a pair of polished black shoes appeared in his line of sight. "Addison, we have a guest today. You're not welcome," Lance's voice rang out, his gaze fixed coldly on her. Addison looked up, meeting Lance's eyes, and knew he wasn't pleased to see her. A smile crept onto her face as she spoke. "Don't worry, I'm leaving. I won't stay and get in your way." She smoothly moved past Lance and stopped in front of Leon. "Let's go. I'll take you to lunch," she said, as if it were the most casual thing in the world. Though she didn't know exactly why Leon was at Johnston Enterprise's hospital, it was still early, and he probably hadn't eaten yet. She figured she'd take him out for lunch and then ask him why he was there. Virginia's face soured at once. "Addison, do you know who this is?" She couldn't believe this girl would speak to someone from the Daves family like that. "You're offering to take him to lunch? Stop making a scene and leave," Virginia snapped. Before Virginia had even finished speaking, Leon's expression changed. He wasn't happy with how the woman was treating Angel. He turned to Lance. "I think you said this lady invited me here to treat Steven?"Addison froze for a moment, a laugh escaping her lips. "Virginia said she invited you?" Virginia didn't even know her uncle—how could she claim to have invited him? She was trying to take credit for something she hadn't done. Addison's smile widened, her gaze sliding over Virginia as she studied her from head to toe. Virginia shifted uncomfortably under the scrutiny. Lance didn't notice anything out of the ordinary. He simply nodded. "Isn't that what happened?" he asked. Virginia's heart skipped a beat. She had thought Dr. Daves was the quiet, distant type who would just do his job and leave without any fuss. The Daves family was too powerful to worry about trivial things like who invited him. She had assumed Dr. Daves had come out of kindness, just doing a good deed without any strings attached. Virginia had planned to claim the credit for everything. Once the doctor left, no one would question who truly deserved the recognition. But things weren't turning out as she had hoped. She quickly shifted the conversation. "Dr. Daves, you must be tired. Let me take you to lunch." Addison raised an eyebrow, her voice laced with mockery. "Don't you understand the order of things? I asked him first." She paused and then added, "You think you have the right to invite him, but I'm the one who's truly qualified." At first, Addison hadn't intended to fire back. But Virginia's boldness pushed her to stand her ground and cool the anger building inside her. "Qualified? If I didn't know better, I'd think you were a princess," Addison's tone cut through the air. "Addison!" Virginia's face twisted with rage. She stormed toward Addison, intending to shove her aside, but Lance stepped in. His large hand stopped her in her tracks. "Perhaps I've been too lenient on you." Lance tightened his grip on Virginia's wrist, pulling her off balance. She staggered before finally steadying herself."Step aside," Lance said, his gaze fixed elsewhere. His words left no room for discussion. Virginia stood frozen, unable to do anything but seethe with anger. She glared at Addison, her gaze sharp, before stepping back. Isaac, standing to the side, noticed Virginia heading his way. He quickly stepped aside, offering a forced, sycophantic smile. But Virginia, already irritated, found his smile grating. It only added to her frustration. With a cold look, she said, "Move." Isaac quickly retreated to the corner, not daring to speak. Leon, watching Virginia from behind, furrowed his brow. Earlier, when she had made a move toward Angel, he had acted immediately to protect her. But now, something about the woman caught his attention. He looked at her closely. The charm she was wearing ... It was identical to the one Angel had. His expression darkened. The charm Angel wore had been a gift from Matthew on the day she was born. Leon knew it was not only priceless but also unique—there could be no other like it in the entire Daves family. So why did this woman have one? The question gnawed at him. Lance's voice cut through Leon's thoughts. "Dr. Daves, if you have something to say, go ahead." Leon snapped back to reality. He quickly pushed his earlier thoughts aside and spoke slowly. "I'm here to treat Steven, not because of this young lady," Leon said, casting a serious glance at Virginia. Lance drew in a deep breath. The moment he noticed Virginia's slightly flustered reaction, doubts began to form in his mind. Now that Dr. Daves had so clearly stated his reasons, Virginia's guilt seemed sealed. A wave of disappointment washed over Lance. He couldn't understand why Virginia had gone so far, telling lie after lie right in his face. It was as if dishonesty had become second nature to her ... A sense of disgust began to stir in him. He tried to keep his expression neutral. "So, if it wasn't because of Virginia, may I ask who it was for?" Leon cleared his throat. "I came to treat Steven because of Angel." "If Angel hadn't exhausted herself on Steven's surgery yesterday, I wouldn't be here today." Steven's condition wasn't his main concern. What mattered to him was Angel's well-being. He remembered how, the night before, Angel had been so exhausted she could hardly keep her eyes open. She'd drifted off to sleep mid-sentence, completely drained. Leon had seen it all. Watching her struggle had hurt him. He knew Angel's nature well. She was deeply attached to Lance, and with Steven in trouble, she would have been consumed with worry. As long as Steven's condition didn't improve, Angel would be restless. Leon had hoped that by treating Steven, he could ease Angel's worries. Angel? Lance's expression darkened with confusion. Angel? Wasn't that Virginia's nickname? He recalled their first meeting, right after he had been rescued. When he'd opened his eyes, he saw Virginia's smiling face. Before he could fully process what was happening, someone had called out "Angel," and Virginia had disappeared from view. Virginia's nickname was Angel, but why was Leon saying she hadn't asked him to come? "Did you just say Angel asked you to come?" Lance asked again, his voice tight with suspicion. Leon nodded. "Yes." Lance's face grew unreadable. A twinge of regret crossed his mind. Had he misjudged Virginia? It seemed her uncle had indeed played a part in this, but Dr. Daves only knew him. The doctor was acting on Virginia's behalf indirectly, which meant he hadn't actually met her.
