The Replacement He Never Wanted

Chapter 200 No Beggar

Leon stuffed the small wooden box into his pocket. It wasn't big, but it was enough to make the pocket bulge slightly. He placed the clothes he had worn during the treatment on the chair Virginia had brought over. Then, without a word, he looked at her. His expression was unreadable. Virginia opened her mouth, as though to speak, but no words came out. It was clear to her now. Leon's departure meant the old man had been treated well enough. In this case, Leon leaving worked to her advantage. If Lance kept asking questions she couldn't answer, having Leon gone would make it easier to cover things up. No one could challenge her story. Leon didn't spare Lance a glance. Hands behind his back, he slowly walked toward the door. Just as he reached it, Lance's voice called out to him. "Dr. Daves." The tone was even, but there was a clear, unspoken challenge in the words. Virginia felt a knot form in her stomach. She rushed forward, grabbing Lance's arm. "Lance, that's just how Dr. Daves is. Don't let it get to you." "Steven is fine now. We should see him." She couldn't afford for Lance to make an enemy of Dr. Daves. Her good standing would be ruined. "Lance, please. Let's go in," Virginia urged softly, her voice barely above a whisper as she hoped for his compliance. Lance ignored her, his gaze fixed on Leon. With a sharp motion, he signaled to the bodyguard to stop him. Leon, who had been walking ahead, noticed the bodyguard blocking his way. He raised an eyebrow. He turned to Lance, who was standing with his hands at his sides. "What's this about?" Seeing Lance's unyielding gesture, Virginia's heart skipped a beat. She feared things might escalate. "Lance, he saved Steven. Please, don't do this. Calm down."Lance shot her a brief glance. "I am calm," he said coolly. Without another word, he gestured for the bodyguard to act. The bodyguard immediately drew his gun, pressing it against Leon's stomach. He began to push Leon back toward the ICU. No matter how much Leon despised Lance, the cold pressure of the gun left him with no choice but to comply. Step by step, he was forced back toward the ICU door. Lance walked ahead without sparing him a second glance. Leon couldn't help but smirk, a dry chuckle escaping him as he said, "The Johnstons sure know how to treat their guests." The sarcasm was obvious, but Lance didn't react. Just when Leon thought Lance was about to confront him, the man veered off in a different direction. He walked over to the chair, then paused. What was he up to? Lance extended a long arm, picking up the clothes Leon had discarded. What? Leon blinked, confused by Lance's sudden actions. Lance casually tossed the clothes toward Isaac, who caught them with quick hands and cradled them to his chest. "Please, Dr. Daves, have a seat," Lance said, pulling the chair back and gesturing for Leon to sit. Leon hesitated. His mind raced with reasons not to sit, but with the gun so close, there was no real choice. He sat down. Before he could collect his thoughts, Lance's next words completely took him by surprise. "Isaac, bring in the gift I prepared for Dr. Daves." Virginia's mouth dropped open. She had expected Lance to be cold and maybe dismissive, but she hadn't imagined he would go to such lengths for Dr. Daves. Isaac hurriedly set the clothes aside and rushed out to retrieve something. Moments later, Isaac returned, flanked by a group of people carrying an assortment of items.Isaac, leading the group, carried two elegant sandalwood boxes. Behind him, others held bundles of herbs, tea leaves, and even diamonds and gold. The display was overwhelming, as if every treasure imaginable was on offer. Virginia stood frozen, wide-eyed. She could hardly believe it. Lance had prepared all of this ... for Dr. Daves? The gesture was more than generous. Isaac stopped in front of Leon, holding the trays. Lance made a small motion with his hand, signaling him to open the boxes. "Open them." Inside the first box, smooth red silk lined the bottom. Tied with crimson thread were several bundles of herbs. The second box contained more herbs, along with a delicate note written in elegant script. Leon gave the two boxes a brief glance before letting his eyes wander over the other items Isaac's team carried. He couldn't help but laugh, his smile spreading wide. The laugh shook his entire body. "Are these meant for charity?" he mocked, his voice filled with amusement. Virginia's eyes widened, and her heart sank. The main branch is richer than I thought. All these gifts, and he thinks it's only enough for charity work. Lance, on the other hand, remained composed. His expression gave little away, but his tone was surprisingly humble. "I know these gifts are nothing compared to what the your family is used to," he said, "but they are sincere tokens from my family. Please accept them." Isaac held two boxes, each containing rare herbs worth a small fortune. These herbs were nearly impossible to find in all of Halton. Even Kreshill had only a few, if any. What he didn't know was that for the Daves, these herbs were a dime a dozen. They could find them anywhere. "Within the Johnstons' abilities?" Leon's smile vanished. "If you can't afford decent gifts, you shouldn't have gone through all the trouble for this. All it does is embarrass you." These items combined didn't even come close to the value of the secret Daves medicine he had just given Steven. "I don't need anything from the Johnstons. All you need to do is know your place. And stop messing things up for everyone else." The warning was clear: stay away from their family, especially Angel. "Huh?" Lance didn't catch the meaning. "I'm not sure what you're implying," Lance said, "but since you came today to treat Steven at Virginia's request, we must express our gratitude." "Virginia's request?" Leon's eyebrows shot up, and his silver beard twitched. "Who said I came at Virginia's request?" He had no idea who Virginia was. Lance froze. Virginia's heart skipped a beat. She hadn't expected Lance to thank her so directly, and she certainly hadn't anticipated Leon denying it on the spot. Turning his gaze to Virginia, who was nervously twisting her hands, Leon asked, "What's going on?" Virginia quickly tried to smooth things over. "Well, it wasn't at my request." She continued, "I only told my uncle about the situation. He probably sent the doctor here. It's normal that he doesn't know me." She forced herself to stay calm, but her mind was racing. Lance nodded, accepting the explanation. It made sense to him. "Your uncle?" Leon's tone grew sharp. "You're saying your uncle sent me here?" "That's absurd. I was—" Before he could finish, the sound of footsteps on the stairs interrupted him. Addison entered, dressed in black. If it hadn't been for the traffic, she would have arrived sooner.
