The Replacement He Never Wanted
Addison turned and noticed her portable medicine kit on the nearby table. The box hadn't been closed since the last time it was opened, so she walked over to it. Inside were various types of medications, including both herbal and modern treatments, each stored in separate containers. Despite their differences, they all had one thing in common—they were formulas Addison had personally created and weren't available for sale anywhere. She quickly scanned the contents and selected a tube of medicine. At that moment, Virginia, having just finished a phone call, emerged from the corner. Seeing Lance still watching Addison intently, she walked over to him. She joined him at the window, watching as Addison reached for medication from her kit. A sudden thought crossed Virginia's mind. "Lance, have the medicines in Addison's kit been sterilized?" she asked. Before Lance could respond, Robert, ever quick to answer, spoke up confidently, "Of course, they've been sterilized. Ms. Daves has a background in clinical medicine. If she didn't understand this basic principle, she wouldn't be a doctor." Virginia, irritated by Robert's blunt tone, cursed him inwardly. She felt that the subordinates nowadays lacked respect and tact. When she became Lance's wife, she'd make sure to address their rude behavior. However, she masked her irritation with politeness. "Sorry, I don't know much about medicine, so my questions might seem a bit ignorant. I hope you don't mind." Her words were courteous and unassuming, despite her high status. Robert, who was used to being treated with less respect, was taken aback but quickly waved it off. "It's fine. Before Mr. Johnston took the medicine kit into the operating room, I stopped him and sterilized it, so I know all about it." Virginia nodded thoughtfully. "Got it. And did you also remind Lance to change into the surgical gown before going in?" "Yes, of course. The operating room needs to stay sterile," Robert responded. Although Lance wasn't supposed to enter the operating room without permission, he was the CEO, so Robert, as his doctor, couldn't stop him. Robert could only focus on maintaining the sterile environment in the room.Lance looked at Virginia, frowning as he asked, "What do you want to know exactly?" He could tell she had a reason for asking those questions. Virginia froze for a second. After a brief pause, she reluctantly answered, "It's nothing. I'm just feeling anxious, so I wanted to talk to ease the tension." Lance nodded, not sensing any trouble. But when he looked at Virginia's worried face, he could see the concern in her eyes. His heart softened at the sight of her worry. He gently put his arm around her shoulder and patted her back, trying to comfort her. "Don't worry. Grandpa will be fine." He said it to reassure her but also to calm himself. Virginia leaned into Lance's shoulder, nodding with determination. "Yes, Lance. You're right. Mr. Steven will be fine!" ... Addison carefully prepared the medication she had developed, drawing it into a syringe. Without hesitation, she injected it into Steven's body. Once done, she placed the syringe down and took a deep breath. Now, all she had to do was wait in silence for the results. Standing still, she looked at Steven's pale face, her thoughts drifting to her time at the Johnston Residence. Steven had always been neutral toward her, not overly caring but not distant either. It was a comfortable, balanced relationship. If not for what happened at the last banquet, Addison would have genuinely liked Steven's personality. The medicine began working quickly. Addison checked the electrocardiogram beside her and saw it stabilize. After a while, it returned to a normal pattern. Seeing the positive change, Addison smiled faintly. She had done it! Moreover, she had accomplished something new—liquid resuscitation. The tension she'd felt earlier eased away. Turning to look through the observation window, she saw Lance standing there, watching her quietly. But his face showed no emotion, and he seemed unaware of the success. When Addison glanced his way, Lance didn't react, confusion flashing across his face. What did her expression mean? He couldn't tell if the surgery had been a success or a failure. For the first time, Lance realized how little he understood Addison. Despite living with her for three years, he still couldn't interpret her expression. Addison noticed Lance's bewildered look and saw Virginia standing beside him, equally clueless. After confirming Steven's condition, Addison removed her mask and opened the operating room door. Lance hurried toward her, eager to know the outcome. "How is it? Is Grandpa out of danger?" His voice was full of worry. Addison glanced at him, holding her mask, and calmly replied, "Mr. Steven's life is saved." "Really?" Lance hadn't even had a chance to share his happiness when a surprised shout came from next to him. Addison looked over and saw Robert, who had questioned her earlier in the operating room. "Did you truly save Mr. Steven?" Robert asked, his voice full of disbelief. Steven had been in such bad shape that he had even stopped breathing at one point. How could he possibly have been saved? Addison didn't answer him directly. She simply looked at him and said, "If you want to know whether he's saved, go see for yourself." Although Lance tried to remain composed, his heart was racing after hearing this news. Addison had actually saved his grandfather. Even if it was a tactic to capture his attention, it was undeniably effective. "What do you want ... " Before Lance could say anything more, the operating room door opened again. He turned and saw Robert pushing Steven out. He quickly forgot what he was about to say and rushed to Steven's side. As Lance left, Virginia began to remove her disguise and said to Addison, "I didn't expect you to be so skilled at saving lives!" Her words seemed to have an edge of jealousy. Addison saw through the underlying message in Virginia's words. It was clear that Virginia was trying to hide her jealousy with her actions. However, her attempt to cover it up was pretty clumsy.Addison simply ignored Virginia and walked by without saying anything.
