The Replacement He Never Wanted
A cold feeling against her forehead made Addison frown instinctively. She was about to push Lance away when the door to the operating room suddenly swung open. The loud sound of the metal handle hitting the wall echoed through the room. "Lance, what's wrong with Mr. Steven?" Virginia's voice reached them before she did. Addison froze for a moment, her hand still outstretched. The sudden noise startled her, causing the scalpel she was holding to slip and shift half an inch off its intended target. Blood immediately began to seep from the incision. Lance, unaware of the mistake, turned to see Virginia just entering. He paused in his wiping motion and asked, "Why are you here?" Virginia's face remained neutral, but the quick flicker of malice in her eyes revealed her true feelings. She had just seen Lance gently wipe the sweat from Addison's forehead, which made her sneer inwardly. "Step aside and be quiet. Let Addison handle the surgery." Lance didn't notice the shift in Virginia's expression, only her concern for Steven's condition. Virginia concealed her irritation, putting on a pleasant smile before speaking again, "Addison, you're amazing. You're actually saving people." Lance glanced at her, his frown deepening. "Don't talk." His tone sounded as usual, but Virginia couldn't miss the impatience in his voice. Malice flashed in her eyes once more, but she only nodded in response. She knew she needed to act fast. If things kept going this way, Addison would end up replacing her entirely. She couldn't let that happen. Sweat dripped more densely from Addison's forehead as she focused on the blood slowly leaking out, feeling a buzzing pressure in her head. That was the heart—a place where even the smallest mistake could be disastrous. Lance noticed Addison's hand had stopped moving and asked, "What's wrong?" He didn't realize the error she had just made, caused by the sudden noise."Get out," Addison replied, gripping the scalpel tighter. For a moment, her mind went blank, but she quickly regained control. She had to fix that; she could handle it. She forced herself to calm down and quickly looked for a solution. "What's going on?" Virginia, noticing the serious expression on Addison's face, secretly wondered what was going wrong. "Is something wrong?" she asked, sensing the surgery wasn't going smoothly. She smirked inwardly, curious to see what would happen if Addison failed. What if she couldn't save Steven and instead caused him to die on the operating table? The thought gave Virginia a strange sense of excitement. But her face remained anxious, hiding the true malice beneath her innocent appearance. Lance frowned as well, standing at a safe distance from the surgery. He couldn't see the full situation, just Addison's sweat and constant movements. When Addison continued to ignore her, Virginia didn't push the issue. She stepped forward and gently pulled Lance to her side. Lance turned to her, confused. "You—" Virginia quickly responded, "Addison is in the middle of surgery. We shouldn't disturb her. What if something goes wrong? We can't afford to delay things." Her tone was calm and sincere. "Lance, I know you're worried about Mr. Steven, but you don't understand medicine. Being here won't help Addison. "Plus, we're not doctors. Although we're wearing surgical gowns, we're still just bystanders." As she spoke, her reasoning became more persuasive. Lance fell silent, nodding. "Alright, let's step outside." The door to the operating room opened, and they exited. As they walked, Virginia leaned in a little closer to Lance, subtly revealing her neck, which was covered in sweat from the sprint. The beads of sweat were visible, and she knew Lance could see them. She noticed the sweat on Addison's forehead and assumed he would also notice hers. Sure enough, Lance's gaze flickered to her neck, where the sweat glistened. He briefly looked at the handkerchief he was holding. After a moment of thought, he tossed it into the trash. Virginia stared in disbelief. He actually threw it away! A bodyguard quickly handed Lance a fresh handkerchief, which he used to wipe his hands. He then motioned to Virginia. "You must be tired from running. Why don't you wipe the sweat off your neck?" Virginia was seething inside. Lance had just gently wiped Addison's sweat but didn't do the same for her! The bodyguard brought over a tray with handkerchiefs. "Ms. Dolton, here are some fresh ones. Please choose one." Lance was watching her closely. Frustrated, Virginia grabbed a handkerchief without even glancing at the tray and wiped away the sweat from her neck. Lance didn't react. He simply stood in front of the observation window, eyes fixed on Addison. Virginia's behavior had upset Addison, but she knew she couldn't act on her anger in the operating room. She had to stay calm and focus on the task at hand. Now that she had settled her emotions, she quickly formulated a plan to save Steven. She intended to use liquid resuscitation for his heart. "Lance, do you think Mr. Steven has a chance?" Virginia asked, tossing her handkerchief into the trash before approaching him. He didn't respond. "I hope Addison can save him," Virginia said eagerly. "If she succeeds, she'll be a savior to the Johnstons!" Still, Lance didn't respond. His attention never left the operating room. Virginia sneered, her mood shifting instantly. She turned and walked to the corner, making a call. Her tone was cold as she asked, "How can we turn a person with heart problems in the operating room into a vegetable?" She thought she was showing mercy by keeping Steven alive in that state, rather than letting him die outright. "Heart problems? Be more specific," came the casual response on the other end, indifferent to the situation. Virginia glanced at the attending physician in front of the operating room, her mind working. "I'll get more details." ... Addison squinted as she focused, determined not to make any mistakes. She had completed the liquid resuscitation, but she couldn't afford to relax. The blood flow in the heart was almost back to normal. The next step was an injection. Addison quickly turned to grab her medical kit.
