The Replacement He Never Wanted

Chapter 17 Let Her Give Up

Lance sat by Virginia's bedside, feeding her spoonfuls of the abalone and fish porridge that Francesca prepared. Virginia blinked her bright, watery eyes. "I'm so sorry to trouble you, Lance. With how busy things are at the company, you still came to take care of me." At that moment, the bodyguard entered with his head bowed, respectfully reporting, "Mr. Johnston, Mrs. Johnston met with Ms. Daves today and stayed in the restaurant for quite a while." What trick is Addison up to now? Although Virginia remained expressionless on the bed upon hearing the bodyguard's words, her mind was in turmoil. "Did you hear what they were saying?" Lance asked, his face still cold and betraying no hint of emotion as he casually continued to feed her the abalone and fish porridge. "Mrs. Johnston didn't let me in, so I couldn't hear anything," the bodyguard replied, feeling uneasy. He wanted to go in but was stopped by Marilyn. All he caught were fragments of words related to some kind of medication. "Okay," Lance replied with a slight nod. "It's no longer your concern. Continue to keep an eye on Mother. "And monitor her health closely." The bodyguard sighed in relief and nodded before stepping back. As he finished the last of the porridge, Lance gently took a tissue and wiped the corner of Virginia's mouth. Virginia looked up at the man before her, carefully choosing her words. "Lance, about you and Addison … " She had always believed that once she returned from abroad, Lance, who loved her so deeply, would immediately divorce Addison. What she didn't expect was that Lance still hadn't divorced that woman. She had underestimated the woman's cunning and her significance in Lance's life. From what she could see today, this woman had considerable influence over the Johnstons, making divorce seem difficult. Virginia wanted to gauge Lance's thoughts to have a clearer understanding of the situation. "Don't worry, Virginia. I promised to give you the title of my wife, so I will make it happen." Lance sensed the concerns in Virginia's heart. He knew she wanted the title of wife for her own peace of mind.He couldn't bear the thought of failing to provide reassurance to the woman he loved. He was determined to give her all the reassurance he could. Virginia sat up and took his hand. "You're the best, Lance." "I already asked the lawyer to draft a new divorce agreement, so don't worry," Lance said softly, gently tucking the loose strands of hair behind her ear. "Get some rest and don't worry about anything. If you need anything at the apartment, just let Francesca know. She's been with the Johnstons for a long time and knows how to care for people." No matter what tactics Addison used or how much she tried to persuade him through his mother, he wouldn't sway. His heart belonged to Virginia. He had warned Addison today, but she ignored his advice and continued her scheming. If that was the case, she had only herself to blame for his ruthlessness. After caring for Virginia, Lance stepped out of the apartment and promptly got into the car, where the driver headed toward the office. The company had been busy lately, and he had only managed to find a moment to check on Virginia. He still had a packed schedule of meetings ahead. As he settled into the car, he closed his eyes to gather his thoughts, but his mind kept drifting back to the bodyguard's earlier report. "Mrs. Johnston met with Ms. Daves today." Irritation began to gnaw at him as he squinted ahead. It appeared that for the past three years, Addison had been masking her true nature, pretending to be kind and gracious, while her manipulative side emerged at the thought of divorce. She had used every trick to win his heart. He needed to finalize the divorce quickly to ensure she would give up hope! Lance pulled out his phone, frowning as he dialed Mike's number. "Have you completed the new divorce agreement I requested?" "It's already been drafted. I happen to be free and will bring it to the office right away," Mike's voice came through. Lance hung up, furrowing his brow. After a moment of silence, he decided to send a message to Addison. "8 PM, Johnston Residence. Bring the divorce agreement."It was straightforward. He didn't want to say anything more. Upon seeing the message, Addison raised an eyebrow and promptly deleted it without responding. What kind of commanding tone is that? I want a divorce, but that doesn't mean I can be summoned and dismissed at will. If he had been more polite, she might have agreed to come to the Johnston Residence. As Lance sat in the car and noticed that his message had been read but not replied to, he frowned. How dare she not reply to me?!
