The Replacement He Never Wanted
"Addison, I didn't mention this before, but before you married into the Johnstons, Lance had an older brother." Addison stared blankly at the old photograph, instinctively speaking out loud. "So this is what he was like when he was young." He had such a warm, genuine smile—so straightforward and sincere. He was completely different from Lance. Marilyn assumed Addison was referring to the Lance in the photograph. She pointed at the young Lance with a kindly smile. "Yes, he's always been this aloof, he hasn't changed a bit." Marilyn then shifted her gaze to Harvey in the photo. "This is Lance's brother." "His brother excelled academically from a young age and was exceptionally talented. Their father took great pride in him and often neglected Lance, treating him poorly. "Lance grew up in the shadow of his brother, which made him quite withdrawn … especially after his brother passed away. His personality worsened." As Marilyn spoke, tears welled in her eyes, and she gently took Addison's hand. "As his mother, I think I'm partly to blame for Lance turning out this way. If only I had been more attentive back then, he wouldn't be so cold and distant now." Addison stared quietly at the photograph, barely catching Marilyn's words. Her attention was completely captivated by the young Harvey in the picture. Her thoughts began to drift. Memories she had tried to forget flooded back, and she suddenly recalled the reason Harvey had gone abroad that year. She once asked him why he chose to go abroad. He smiled and said it was fate that led him abroad to find her. Addison understood now. It was probably because he didn't want to burden his brother, right? Staying here would only deepen their father's dissatisfaction with Lance, causing him to become even more withdrawn and taciturn.Harvey, you're so silly. Why do you keep giving so much of yourself without expecting anything in return? Marilyn didn't notice Addison's distraction and continued, "I didn't want to bring this up, but I didn't want you to miss out. You love Lance so much—how could you bear to let him go? "You're the one Lance asked to marry him. You must be very special to him. He needs someone gentle like you to support him through his aloofness." Snapping back to reality, Addison looked at Marilyn's tear-filled eyes. Though she didn't want to upset her, she steeled herself and hesitantly replied, "Mrs. Johnston, Lance will find someone even better." Lance has already found his perfect match, hasn't he? Virginia will be there for him. And for the frustrating temperament he developed over the years, let Virginia handle those! The trauma of his childhood was truly tragic, but she didn't want to be morally bound. His pain should be healed by those who love him, not her. Marilyn tried to find the words, but they seemed to catch in her throat. The two sat in silence for quite a while. Addison recalled that the reason for her visit was to say a proper farewell to Marilyn. Breaking the silence, she spoke up, "Mrs. Johnston, how have you been feeling lately? Are you experiencing any discomfort?" Marilyn had been ill since the day Harvey left, and despite consulting several doctors, she had found no relief. One of Addison's main reasons for marrying Lance was to care for Marilyn. She wanted to help Harvey look after his mother. Marilyn's condition fluctuated, with her mental well-being being the main concern. Addison believed she had some understanding of this, especially since the Daves had a knack for healing that seemed to run in their blood. Over the past three years, she had dedicated herself to counseling Marilyn, and before marrying into the Johnstons, she had even developed special medication specifically for Marilyn's condition. Marilyn's condition had finally stabilized. "I'm feeling much better now. I've been having fewer nightmares lately," Marilyn replied softly. It seemed Addison was determined to go through with the divorce, and Marilyn didn't know what else to say. She knew that the fault lay with Lance. She had already done her best to make it work for him, and now there were no regrets. It seemed fate had decided that she wouldn't have such a wonderful daughter-in-law. "I'm glad to hear that. I was worried you might run out of your medication, so I brought you a few bottles. Remember to take them when you're not feeling well," Addison said as she pulled her specially formulated medication from her bag and handed them to Marilyn. After receiving a call yesterday, she had worked overtime to improve the formula, making it more effective than the version from three years ago and better suited to Marilyn's condition. Once she left the Johnstons, she wouldn't be able to monitor Marilyn's health closely, so this way, Marilyn would have something on hand in case of an emergency. Marilyn reached out to take it. "I trust the medication you give me." "I've already finished the previous supply, and with you and Lance getting divorced, I felt a bit awkward asking for more," she said, a hint of embarrassment in her voice. "Mrs. Johnston, even though Lance and I are divorced, please don't hesitate to reach out if you're not feeling well." Marilyn nodded earnestly. "Our family really owes you." After dinner, Addison stood at the restaurant entrance watching Marilyn's car drive away. The wind tousled her hair as she stood there for a long time, finally whispering, "Mrs. Johnston, I'm the one who owes Harvey."
