The Replacement He Never Wanted
"What a shameless woman! Having her in the Johnstons is utterly disgraceful!" Anger coursed through Lance as he clenched his fists tightly. Initially, he believed that a sudden divorce would be too harsh on Addison, considering her status as a lonely woman. He wanted to make amends for the sacrifices she had made over the past three years. However, disgust consumed him now. He needed to end this marriage with the shameless woman right away! Overwhelmed by his fury, Lance stormed to his car, starting the engine with a furious roar. "Lance, where are you going?" Virginia shouted, hurriedly trying to catch up with him, concern etched on her face. With Addison entangled with another man, Virginia figured she had lost her place within the Johnstons' lives. Lance had no intention of clinging to any lingering feelings—Mrs. Johnston's position was falling into her lap sooner than she had thought! "I have business to attend to. Tim, please take Virginia back to the apartment," he commanded, his expression darkening as he pressed down on the accelerator, leaving only the fading sound of the engine in his wake. "Ms. Dolton, this way, please," Tim said, opening the car door for Virginia. Virginia watched the car speed away from the Johnston Residence. Her earlier anxiety had vanished, and she slid into the vehicle with a sense of lightness. Meanwhile, Lance's long fingers tapped impatiently on the steering wheel as he dialed Addison's number. Keith had been heartbroken and had gone abroad to "heal." Addison had taken him to the airport and was now moving her newly purchased items into her new place at Pendomium Heights. As Addison sprawled out on her sofa to rest, she noticed Lance's name lighting up her phone, raising her eyebrows in surprise. Has he checked all the books already? Is he calling to apologize? She answered the call casually. "So you've tallied the accounts—" But before she could finish, Lance's commanding voice cut her off. "Get to the clerk's office now; I've sent you the address." "Huh?" Addison was still processing when he abruptly ended the call. We're getting a divorce now? Although she was confused about the sudden change, this meant she could finally break free from the Johnstons. It seemed Virginia had done her a favor by intervening. She loved that person deeply; after three years by Lance's side, she had grown used to the comfort she felt when she saw his face. The thought of leaving filled her with unease, akin to withdrawal. But now that she had decided to wake up from this dream, she had to confront reality. Addison resolved to head out immediately to fully emerge from the illusion. At the clerk's office, Lance stood tall in a sleek black suit, his piercing eyes surveying the area with evident irritation. His sharply defined nose and chiseled features only added to his displeasure. As Addison approached in a flowing dress, she spotted him standing at the entrance, the afternoon sun casting a warm glow around him, and a fleeting wave of panic washed over her. Even though she recognized him as Lance and not that person, her demeanor softened instinctively. "I'm sorry for being late; there was a bit of traffic," she said. His familiar appearance stirred a flutter in her heart, destabilizing her resolve. Having dreamt of him for so long had made her reliant on his presence, and the moment she saw his face, doubt crept back in. Yet that moment of uncertainty was quickly dispelled by her firm determination. Lance looked up, his expression inscrutable as he noted the gentle look on her face, a warmth reminiscent of the past three years. It was a stark contrast to her attitude just moments ago at the sales office. Is she trying to play the emotional card? Does she think that would make me hesitate about the divorce? Not a chance! If she could engage in such shameful behavior, she should understand the consequences. Lance regarded the seemingly tender Addison with indifference, speaking casually, "There's no point in dragging this out. You might try to delay it, but you can't put it off forever. This marriage has to end." Addison smiled at his words. "We're on the same page, then. Let's get this divorce over with quickly." No matter how much he resembled the man she remembered, he ultimately wasn't the same person. Addison understood that self-deception wouldn't serve her. It was best to end this marriage sooner rather than later. She hoped Virginia would care for Lance's grandfather and mother after marrying into the family. While his mother's health had temporarily improved under her three years of care, the risk of a relapse still lingered ... Lance frowned, narrowing his eyes at Addison. "Well then, let's head inside. The sooner we finalize this divorce, the sooner we can both move on," Addison said calmly, meeting his gaze without a trace of sadness. Finally, concluding it all brought her a sense of relief. Hearing this, Lance's forehead tensed, veins bulging as his expression darkened. Virginia's suspicions were spot on. Addison is so eager for the divorce that she won't even pretend to be sad. She is probably just itching to find another man right after the divorce! "Fine, let's go in." His expression fluctuated as he shot Addison a dark look. "Once we're divorced, don't think you can come back to me!" "Don't worry. I won't," Addison replied with a nonchalant tone.
