The Replacement He Never Wanted
"Mr. Tillery, I need you to immediately tally the cash and verify our bank deposits. If you find any inconsistencies, report them to me right away! "Get the finance team to confirm all company transactions at once. Make sure every account receivable is settled!" Once he hung up the phone, Lance rushed back to the Johnston Residence, his frustration palpable. He summoned the butler, Tim Rehbein, with an air of urgency. Tim approached cautiously, aware of Lance's obvious agitation. Having served the Johnstons for decades, he had watched Lance grow up but had seldom seen him this enraged. "Tim, I want a thorough inventory of all the fixed assets at the Johnston Residence. Leave nothing unchecked!" His voice held an unmistakable edge. "Yes, I've kept track of the Johnstons' assets since taking over from Ms. Daves. I'll prepare the details for you right away." Standing beside Lance, Virginia offered a cup of premium tea. "Lance, try not to let it get to you. Have some tea; it might help you relax." She guided him to a seat, gently patting his back. "Take a moment to breathe, okay? Don't let Addison get under your skin. "Once Tim prints out the accounts, we'll find out if she's lying." A thrill of excitement coursed through her at the prospect of uncovering the true wealth of the Johnstons. Before long, Tim returned with the financial documents. "Mr. Johnston, I've gone over everything again. The accounts are all correct. If you have doubts, you can review them yourself." Tim was uncertain if Lance desired accuracy or if he preferred to find flaws. He knew that one wrong move or misstep could unleash his wrath. He bit his lip as he handed over a neatly organized stack of reports. "The accounts are all correct?" Lance inquired, taking the reports from Tim with a furrowed brow, scrutinizing him before he started to verify the details. "I can help with the reconciliation; I'm familiar with accounting," Virginia suggested, inching closer to Lance, her hand resting on his shoulder and gently kneading it. As she glanced at the documents in Lance's hand, her breath caught in her throat. When excluding the company's daily earnings, the Johnstons' fixed assets were far more impressive than she had anticipated! At that moment, she felt certain that returning to Lance was the right choice. Suddenly, the office phone rang, and Virginia hurried to answer. The finance team's voice came through the line. "Mr. Johnston, we've thoroughly reviewed everything. There are no discrepancies with the company's finances." "How can that be?" Virginia exclaimed, caught off guard. How could the Johnstons' finances be flawless? Where did Addison acquire her money? Lance's expression softened a bit, the tension in his handsome features easing. It appeared Addison hadn't lied; he realized he had wronged her and treated her unfairly. Anyone wronged would understandably be upset. The image of her slight frown lingered in Lance's mind, stirring a sense of guilt within him. He placed the documents on the table, his demeanor still cold. Virginia couldn't read his feelings, but she was reluctant to let this go. Quietly, she asked, "Lance, are the accounts for the Johnston Residence accurate too?" Lance nodded, impatience flashing in his eyes as he brushed Virginia's gentle fingers off his shoulder, his tone firm. "Virginia, if you're going to accuse someone, you need solid evidence. You can't just jump to conclusions." Noticing the change in his tone, Virginia bit her lip, the words of disbelief lodged in her throat. She couldn't fathom how this woman could possess such wealth! It had to have come from a questionable source! If it wasn't from the Johnstons, then where did it originate? Could it be from another man? Virginia's thoughts deepened as she contemplated this possibility. She felt certain about it now. Taking a steadying breath, she blinked her wide eyes at Lance, her expression betraying a sense of unearned blame. Anyone witnessing her would find it hard to fault her. "Lance, I have an idea, but I'm not sure whether I should say it out loud." Seeing her troubled face, Lance softened his demeanor. "Go ahead." Virginia lifted her face, uncertainty flickering in her eyes as she summoned her courage to stammer."If Addison didn't move any assets, how could she have so much money? Could Addison's money be ... from ... " The woman hastily covered her lips in shock, cutting herself off mid-sentence. The man's expression remained serious. "If you have something to say, just say it. There's no need to hold back." Hearing this, the woman seemed to make up her mind. "Could Addison's money have come from another man?" He couldn't shake the memory of her calm demeanor when he suggested the divorce. Lance's face darkened, and the atmosphere around him grew tense. Struggling to suppress his anger, he forced the words through clenched teeth, "No wonder she was so willing to agree to the divorce; it turns out she's involved with someone else." Just moments earlier, I felt guilty for wrongfully accusing her—how laughable! How brazen of her to be with another man behind my back; it's utterly revolting!
