Alpha Raelyn: The Alpha They Never Saw Coming
Seeing Aiden’s steady demeanor helped calm me down. I nodded and followed him to Ruby’s mother’s hospital room. Ruby was curled up at the bedside, sobbing uncontrollably as she called out to her mother. “Alright, enough crying. I’ll take her to another hospital now.” Aiden picked up Ruby’s mother, laid her flat in the back seat of the car, and drove us—me, Ruby, and her—straight to the nearest hospital. The staff there initially refused to admit her, but when they saw Aiden’s eyes practically blazing with fury, their excuses shifted to rules and regulations. “I’ll give you three seconds to decide—save her, or get the hell out.” Aiden didn’t waste a single word and let out his full aura. “M-Mr. Aiden…” The werewolf doctor on duty was already trembling. “Three.” “Okay, okay, please don’t be angry! I’ll get her to the ER right now!” The doctor forced a smile and waved at the nurses, who rushed forward and wheeled Ruby’s mother into the emergency room. Only then did I finally breathe a little easier. Aiden, Ruby, and I waited outside. Ruby was a nervous wreck. She paced back and forth nonstop, eyes fixed on the red light above the operating room, not daring to blink. “Ruby, you’ve been caring for your mom this whole time, barely sleeping. Sit down and rest for a bit.” I noticed the dark circles under her eyes and couldn’t help but feel sorry for her. “I’m fine. I want to be standing when my mom comes out.” Ruby shook her head and refused to sit. The surgery dragged on for what felt like forever—so long my legs had gone numb from sitting. Finally, the red light above the door switched off. Ruby instantly snapped to attention and ran to the door, anxiously waiting.A male doctor in glasses stepped out and scanned the hallway. “Who’s the patient’s family?” “I am!” Ruby rushed over, eyes filled with hope. The doctor hesitated, then said, “Unfortunately, the patient had just come out of surgery but failed to take the correct medication on time. That triggered the internal bleeding. The drug itself also caused serious damage to her system, so…” “I’m sorry. We did everything we could.” The air froze. Ruby’s body trembled as her voice cracked: “Wrong medication? No, that’s impossible. I always watch her take every pill! The doctors bring the meds themselves. How could she take the wrong one…? Doctor, you’re lying, right?!” The doctor frowned, his tone growing impatient. “Please don’t question our judgment. I know this is hard, but you need to sign the death paperwork.” “I’m not signing! You’re lying! My mom can’t be dead!” Ruby completely broke down. She lunged at the doctor, screaming and yanking at his clothes. The doctor looked at us helplessly. I quickly stepped in, pulled Ruby away, and held her tightly, trying to calm her down. I was shocked too. Ruby’s mother had received only the best care and medication—everything had been arranged through me. And Ruby herself was devoted, watching her mother like a hawk. How could she have died from a medication error? Ruby sobbed into my arms, completely inconsolable. That’s when I started to feel something wasn’t right. A terrible suspicion crept into my mind. Could this have been… Andrix? I signaled Aiden to comfort Ruby, then stepped aside and called Andrix. He was likely still in surgery; he didn’t answer. After what felt like dozens of attempts, the call finally connected. Andrix sounded tired on the other end. “What is it? Why are you calling me?” “Andrix. Did you switch Ruby’s mother’s medication? Is that what killed her?” There was a pause. “…She died?”“Don’t play dumb! You’d better explain, or I swear I won’t let you off easy.” I glanced at Ruby, collapsed on the floor, eyes lifeless. Rage surged through my chest. “Raelynn, you can’t throw accusations like that. I didn’t even know the woman. Why would I hurt her? Besides, I was using her to keep you in check. Her dying does nothing for me.” I didn’t believe a word. Just then, a message popped up from Jackson. It said the patient transferred this afternoon wasn’t Ruby’s mother at all—it was someone else, a stranger with the same name who happened to be hospitalized. My legs gave out. My hands shook as I gripped my phone. I screamed into the receiver, “Andrix! You switched the files! You bastard—you killed Ruby’s mom!”
